Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 23: July 13, 1931 A large crop of wheat is expected in Sicily this season with indications pointing to a yield of 36 to 37 million bushels or more (about of the total Italian crop), according to information from Vice Consul Buffum at Palermo. Sicily is far from self supporting in the matter of cereals and imports are expected to continue but the present largecrop of wheat will probably reduce the necessity of importation to below average, the report states. Factors tending to limit Sicilian production usually are (1) lower yields per acre as compared with northern Italy, due to the necessary limited use of fertilizers and (2) rather primitive methods of cultivation and harvest ing. Mechanical threshing is said to be practically non-existent in Sicily. During the year 1928 machine-threshed wheat represented only about 2 per cent of the total Sicilian production as compared with nearly 50 per cent for the Kingdom of Italy.
