Book International Relations as a Discipline in Thailand

Download or read book International Relations as a Discipline in Thailand written by Chanintira na Thalang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been considerable debate about the nature of non-Western IR theory. Most attempts to understand such a phenomenon begin by taking a top-down approach on a country by country basis. Instead, this book takes a bottom-up approach, involving specialists from a range of Thai universities, revealing the contours of the Thai IR community. It examines the state of various sub-fields under the IR rubric in Thailand such as foreign policy analysis, security studies, international political economy and area studies, and how Thai thinkers in these fields have contributed to IR as a discipline and IR theory development in Thailand. In doing so, it identifies factors unique to Thai academia which have hindered the development of an indigenous-sourced theory as well as exploring the similarities shared with other non-Western contexts that have posed an obstacle to the creation of a more general non-Western IR theory. Providing both an in-depth insight into the specific phenomena of Thai IR theory, and a broader perspective on the challenges of formulating non-Western IR theory, this book aims to push the debate on non-Western IR theory forward. It will be of particular interest to readers looking for a better understanding of IR theory in Thailand, but also for those more generally looking to formulate and characterise non-Western approaches to the discipline.

Book Business Groups and the Thailand Economy

Download or read book Business Groups and the Thailand Economy written by Natenapha Wailerdsak and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business Groups and the Thailand Economy examines the role of business groups, specifically state, local, and foreign capitals in the economic development of emerging economies and highlights why business groups are essential in helping a country break out of the middle-income trap. Wailerdsak reviews Thailand’s industrial and economic growth strategies through the local and international investors and explains why business groups are one of the key drivers of economic advancement and why they help to avoid the middle-income trap. The author also examines their business power expansion methods, including selection and specialization, political influence, mergers and acquisitions, outward FDI and business alliances. The book concludes with policy recommendations of how the government can engage business groups to accelerate high-tech industrialization and create jobs. The middle-income trap issue faced by Thailand would be of interest to many emerging economies, especially scholars and policymakers researching on Asian business and management, Asian economies, developmental economics, political economy, policy studies, corporate governance, entrepreneurship, and private company strategic management in emerging countries.

Book excerpt: Thailand is an excellent market for American goods. Political stability, traditional friendship with the United States, popularity of American products, sound fiscal and economic management, and gradual industrialization with a resulting rise in individual purchasing power--all create a welcoming climate for sales of U.S. products. In recognition of this potential, Bangkok has been chosen as the site for a new U.S. Trade Center serving the entire Southeast Asian area. This study is part of the Department of Commerce's continuing effort toward increasing U.S. exports and the general stimulating of our international trade. The expansion of American-Thai economic relations will not only assist in improving our balance of payments and thus aid American economic growth, but can also contribute substantially to the well-being of the Thai people.
