Book Foreign Bank Entry Performance of Domestic Banks and Sequence of Financial Liberalization

Download or read book Foreign Bank Entry Performance of Domestic Banks and Sequence of Financial Liberalization written by Nihal Bayraktar and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The openness or internationalization of financial services is a complex issue because it is closely related to structural reforms in the domestic financial sector with some perceived implications for macroeconomic stability. The authors investigate the impact of foreign bank entry on the performance of domestic banks and how this relationship is affected by the sequence of financial liberalization. Their data set is constructed from the BANKSCOPE database, including 30 industrial and developing countries, and covering the period from 1995 to 2002. The authors apply panel data regressions by pooling all countries together, and by grouping countries according to the sequence of their financial liberalization. One observation based on descriptive analysis is that the degree of openness to foreign bank entry varies a great deal, which is not correlated with average income levels or with GDP growth. Second, the sequence of financial liberalization matters for the performance of the domestic banking sector: After controlling for macroeconomic variables and grouping countries by their sequence of liberalization, foreign bank entry has significantly improved domestic bank competitiveness in countries that liberalized their stock market first. In these countries, both profit and cost indicators are negatively related to the share of foreign banks. Countries that liberalized their capital account first seem to have benefited less from foreign bank entry compared with the other two sets of countries.

Book Foreign Bank Entry and Credit Allocation in Emerging Markets

Download or read book Foreign Bank Entry and Credit Allocation in Emerging Markets written by Ms.Emilia Magdalena Jurzyk and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We employ a unique data set containing bank-specific information to explore how foreign bank entry determines credit allocation in emerging markets. We investigate the impact of the mode of foreign entry (greenfield or takeover) on banks' portfolio allocation to borrowers with different degrees of informational transparency, as well as by maturities and currencies. The impact of foreign entry on credit allocation may stem from the superior performance of foreign entrants ("performance hypothesis"), or reflect borrower informational capture ("portfolio composition hypothesis"). Our results are broadly in line with the portfolio composition hypothesis, showing that borrower informational capture determines bank credit allocation.m

Book Inherited or Earned Performance of Foreign Banks in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Inherited or Earned Performance of Foreign Banks in Central and Eastern Europe written by Ms.Emilia Magdalena Jurzyk and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a combination of propensity score matching and difference-in-difference techniques we investigate the impact of foreign bank ownership on the performance and market power of acquired banks operating in Central and Eastern Europe. This approach allows us to control for selection bias as larger but less profitable banks were more likely to be acquired by foreign investors. We show that during three years after the takeover, banks have become more profitable due to cost minimization and better risk management. They have additionally gained market share, because they passed their lower cost of funds to borrowers in terms of lower lending rates. Previous studies failed to pick up the improvements in performance of takeover banks, because they did not account for the performance of financial institutions before acquisitions.

Book The impact of the foreign bank entry on the performance of brazilian private banking

Download or read book The impact of the foreign bank entry on the performance of brazilian private banking written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Impact of Foreign Bank Entry in Emerging Markets

Download or read book The Impact of Foreign Bank Entry in Emerging Markets written by Todd A. Gormley and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses the entry of foreign banks into India during the 1990s - analyzing variation in both the timing of the new foreign banks' entries and in their location - to estimate the effect of foreign bank entry on domestic credit access and firm performance. In contrast to the belief that foreign bank entry should improve credit access for all firms, the estimates indicate that foreign banks financed only a small set of very profitable firms upon entry, and that on average, firms were eight percentage points less likely to have a loan after a foreign bank entry because of a systematic drop in domestic bank loans. Similar estimates are obtained using the location of pre-existing foreign firms as an instrument for foreign bank locations. Moreover, the observed decline in loans is greater among smaller firms, firms with fewer tangible assets, and firms affiliated with business groups. The drop in credit also appears to adversely affect the performance of smaller firms with greater dependence on external financing. Overall, this evidence is consistent with the exacerbation of information asymmetries upon foreign bank entry.

Download or read book Foreign Banks written by Mr.Stijn Claessens and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper introduces a comprehensive database on bank ownership for 137 countries over 1995-2009, and reviews foreign bank behavior and impact. It documents substantial increases in foreign bank presence, with many more home and host countries. Current market shares of foreign banks average 20 percent in OECD countries and 50 percent elsewhere. Foreign banks have higher capital and more liquidity, but lower profitability than domestic banks do. Only in developing countries is foreign bank presence negatively related with domestic credit creation. During the global crisis foreign banks reduced credit more compared to domestic banks, except when they dominated the host banking systems.

Book Financial Integration and Firm Performance

Download or read book Financial Integration and Firm Performance written by Mariassunta Giannetti and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the positive growth effects of financial integration are extensively documented, little is known of its impact on small and young firms. This paper aims to fill this void relying on a panel of 60,000 firm-year observations on listed and unlisted companies in Eastern European economies to assess the differential impact of foreign bank lending on firm growth and financing. Foreign lending stimulates growth in firm sales, assets, and use of financial debt even though the effect is dampened for small firms. More strikingly, young firms benefit most from foreign bank presence, while businesses connected to domestic banks or to the government suffer. Overall, our findings suggest that foreign banks can help to mitigate connected-lending problems and to improve capital allocation.

Book Foreign Bank Entry and Bank Performance in Poland

Download or read book Foreign Bank Entry and Bank Performance in Poland written by Katarzyna Mikolajczyk and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Poland as an example, the paper analyses the impact of foreign capital inflow on banking sector with regard to bank efficiency. The main research question is whether ownership structure plays a significant role for bank strategies, profitability and long-term stability of the banking market. The paper concentrates on analysing bank operational efficiency using ratio analysis and DEA models: balance sheet based and revenue based. Analysing performance of banks operating in Poland, the Authors use balance-sheet data of 50 largest Polish banks, comprising app. 90% of total banking assets for the period 1998-2007. The aim is to compare the recent Polish data with those of other countries, identifying factors which determine the efficiency of foreign and domestic banks. At the end, the paper tries to address the long-term challenges posed by the global banking crisis.

Book Bank Efficiency amid Foreign Entry

Download or read book Bank Efficiency amid Foreign Entry written by Torsten Wezel and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the efficiency of domestic and foreign banks in the Central American region during 2002-07. Using two main empirical approaches, Data Envelopment Analysis and Stochastic Frontier Analysis, the paper finds that foreign banks are not necessarily more efficient than their domestic counterparts. If anything, the regional banks that were acquired by global banks in a wave of acquisitions during 2005-07 can keep up with the local institutions. The efficiency of these acquired banks, however, is shown to have dropped during the acquisition year, recovering only slightly thereafter. Finally, it is important to account for the environment in which banks operate, as country-, sector- and firm-specific characteristics are found to have a considerable influence on bank efficiency.

Book Commercial Banking

Download or read book Commercial Banking written by Christopher Gan and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of financial intermediaries is arguably an artifact of information asymmetry. Beyond simple financial transactions, financial intermediation provides a mechanism for information transmission, which can reduce the degree of information asymmetry and consequently increase market efficiency. During the process of information transmission, the bank is able to provide unique services in the production and exchange of information. Therefore, banks have comparative advantages in information production, transmission, and utilisation. This book provides an overview of commercial banking and includes empirical methods in banking such risk and bank performance, capital regulation, bank competition and foreign bank entry, bank regulation on bank performance, and capital adequacy and deposit insurance.
