Book excerpt: In addition to the goals of alleviating poverty, encouraging democratic social and political forces, fostering economic growth and stability, and cultivating bilateral relations in Asia, since September 2001, the United States has redoubled its efforts in fighting terrorism in parts of the region. This report discusses changing U.S. aid programs for 16 East Asian and South Asian countries. After the war on terrorism began, the United States promised increases of 17% and 250% to East Asia and South Asia, respectively. In South Asia, Pakistan and India have become "front line" states in the U.S. campaign against terrorism. For years, the United States has restricted foreign assistance to many countries in East and South Asia in order to encourage democracy and reduce the spread of nuclear weapons capabilities.

Book Promoting Development

Download or read book Promoting Development written by Barbara Stallings and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new approach to studying foreign aid in the 21st century. While most analysts focus on the differences between traditional and emerging donors, Stallings and Kim here argue that a more important distinction is between East Asian donors and their western counterparts. Asian donors – Japan, South Korea, and China – cross the traditional and emerging divide and demonstrate a particular approach to development that draws on their own dramatic success. As East Asia continues its upward trajectory of economic development, the politics of aid can reveal surprising truths about the objectives and mechanisms of soft power and diplomacy in creating new networks in the region. This book will be of interest to NGO workers, scholars, and students of international relations, a critical part of research into Asia's rise and the emerging spheres of influence.
