Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 7: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; April 1943 It should be noted that these degrees of self-sufficiency are based upon the quantitative and qualitative dietary levels as they actually prevailed in the pre-war period. They are, therefore, conditioned by general economic, institutional, and social circumstances as much as bylnaturalfactors. We know that continental Europe's pre-war food standards were high in some countries and population groups, medium and low in others, and averaged considerably under the advanced western European levels. A better diet, therefore, would have meant larger dependence on imported food supplies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 7: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; March 1943 It must be kept in mind that Great Britain is the principal military objective of the German high comand. It was the plan cf Germany in 1914-18 to defeat the Allies by using unrestricted submarine warfare to cut off the overseas food supplies flowing to the United Kingdom. Fortunately, that plan was defeated. Instead, due in no small part to the blockade of Germany and the deterioration of food production and of the food-distribution system within Germany and austria-hungary, the collapse of the Central Powers was effected. Again Germany is trying to cut off the flow of food to Britain. Again our victory depends, among other efforts, upon the maintenance of the food sup ply of the United Kingdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 7: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; January, 1943 The expansion of the crop area of Australia was practically uninterrupted from 1860 to 1915-16 when, as a result of a Special effort to raise more food during the world war of 1914-18, million acres were cultivated. Thereafter the cropland was subjected to sharp fluctuations; it reached a low of million in 1919 - 20 and a peak of 25 million acres in 1930-31. In 1938-39 the crop area was estimated at million acres. The fluctuations are due to the fact that wheat is the crop most extensively grown in Australia, and material changes in the total area of crops are largely a reflection of variations in the acreage sown to this cereal. Ch the whole, the crop acreage accounts for only 1 percent of the total area of Australia. Yet, despite the relatively small area, there are over 3 cultivated acres per inhabitant. This compares favorably with such a country as the United States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 7: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; November 1943 The total population of the region amounts to about 25 million people. Egypt leads with over 16 million; Iraq follows with 4 million; Syria and Lebanon together have 3 million; and Palestine and trans-jordan, 2 million. Concentration per unit of cultivated area is extremely high in Egypt, about persons to the square mile; in Lebanon the average is about whereas it is only 70 in trans-jordan and 80 in Iraq. Aside from this peculiar pattern of concentration, a distinctive feature of the population is that over 75 percent are rural and dependent upon agriculture for a living. Most of the rural inhabitants are settled, living in compact villages. The fellahin and their animals leave the village in the morning and go to work in the surrounding fields. No isolated farmsteads exist between the villages. In addition to settled villagers, therural population consists of nomadic and seminomadic tribes. The former are on the move most of the year, following the seasons with their flocks, whereas the latter settle down for a short time during the planting and harvesting seasons. 'this transition from the one extreme of pure nomadism to the other extreme of permanent agricultural settlement, with mobility at a low minimum, has been taking place in that part of the world for thousands of years. At present one can readily observe such transition in action by moving inland a short distance from the narrow coastal plains, fertile river valleys, or oases, toward the interior plateaus and deserts. Another population aspect, which has a direct bearing upon the subject of this article, is that both the birth rate and the death rate are very high. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 7: Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; December 1943 Both dispersion and pulverization are typical of the mountains, where they had their origin in the distant past.12 bathe Plains of Sardinia and Friuli, ill-advised alienation of the public domain, followed by subdivision of estates, has brought the phenomenon of pulverization to pathological extremes. Where holdings are larger than the Operating units or where land is owned by juridical rather than physical persons, land, management, and labor are separate contributions of different groups. In other words, a middleman entrepreneur is interposed between landlord and peasants. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 7: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; July, 1943 Sheep are also widely distributed over the nation but are more highly concentrated than cattle as far as major production areas are concerned. Che large sheep zone is in eastern Entre Rios and southeastern Corrientes; another in southern Buenos Aires; and the largest one occupies practically all of Patagonia, which is approximately all the continental territory of Argentina south of latitude 39 S. The working population is less than person per square mile, more than 70 percent of all farm headquarters are more than 15 miles from railroad stations or ports, and approximately 50 percent of the farm homes are more than 15 miles from a public school. The typical method of operating a large sheep estancia is by administration. In some cases the land is divided among tenants and sharecroppers, so to Speak. They receive their sheep from the manager, agree to handle them in specified ways, and finally turn them over to the manager for marketing. The renter receives 25 percent of the net sales for the sheep and wool he delivers to the manager. 'the average renter is given responsibility for to sheep.
