WIC provides nutritious foods to supplement diets, nutrition education, and referrals to health care and other social services. This book was released on 2017-06-25 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) began 40 years ago as a pilot program and has since grown to serve over 8 million pregnant women, and mothers of and their infants and young children. Today the program serves more than a quarter of the pregnant women and half of the infants in the United States, at an annual cost of about $6.2 billion. Through its contribution to the nutritional needs of pregnant, breastfeeding, and post-partum women; infants; and children under 5 years of age; this federally supported nutrition assistance program is integral to meeting national nutrition policy goals for a significant portion of the U.S. population. To assure the continued success of the WIC, Congress mandated that the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reevaluate the program's food packages every 10 years. In 2014, the USDA asked the Institute of Medicine to undertake this reevaluation to ensure continued alignment with the goals of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In this third report, the committee provides its final analyses, recommendations, and the supporting rationale.

Book The Economics of Food Vendors Specialized to Serving the Women Infants and Children Program

Download or read book The Economics of Food Vendors Specialized to Serving the Women Infants and Children Program written by Patrick W. McLaughlin and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the impacts of food vendors that have emerged primarily or exclusively to redeem benefits for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. Federal regulations impose strict requirements on state WIC agencies which authorize vendors that derive more than 50% of their food sales through WIC. Such vendors are commonly known as above-50 or A50 vendors, and most state WIC agencies do not authorize them. Using extensive transactions-level data for the Greater Los Angeles area (GLA), we examine A50 vendors' performance in the WIC program, including their pricing behavior relative to other WIC vendors in a but-for world where A50 vendors are not authorized. We also conduct econometric tests designed to gauge A50 vendors' impacts on WIC program access and participation, and costs charged for WIC foods by other program vendors. Results indicate that A50 vendors operating in GLA (a) modestly reduced WIC program food costs relative to a but-for world where they were not authorized, (b) had a modest pro-competitive effect on the pricing behavior of small, non-A50 vendors, which have tended to charge the highest absolute prices for WIC foods in California, (c) caused a modest reduction in participant travel distance (and, hence, transaction costs), and (d) appear to have facilitated participant access. On balance, our results suggest that A50 vendors can improve the food-delivery environment for the WIC program and facilitate participant access to WIC benefits without imposing additional food costs on the program.

Download or read book WIC Food Packages written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-28 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (the WIC program) has promoted the health of low-income families for more than 30 years by providing nutrition education, supplemental food, and other valuable services. The program reaches millions of families every year, is one of the largest nutrition programs in the United States, and is an important investment in the nation's health. The U.S. Department of Agriculture charged the Institute of Medicine with creating a committee to evaluate the WIC food packages (the list of specific foods WIC participants obtain each month). The goal of the study was to improve the quality of the diet of WIC participants while also promoting a healthy body weight that will reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The committee concluded that it is time for a change in the WIC food packages and the book provides details on the proposed new food packages, summarizes how the proposed packages differ from current packages, and discusses the rationale for the proposed packages.

Download or read book Proposed Criteria for Selecting the WIC Food Packages written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-08-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Started in 1974, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) was designed to meet the special nutritional needs of low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, or postpartum women; infants; and children up to 5 years of age who have at least one nutritional risk factor. The WIC Program provides three main benefits: supplemental foods, nutrition education, and referrals to health and social services. Since the inception of the WIC program, substantial changes in size and demographics of the population, food supply and dietary patterns, and health concerns have made it necessary to review the WIC food packages. Proposed Criteria for Selecting the WIC Food Packages proposes priority nutrients and general nutrition recommendations for the WIC program, and recommends specific changes to the WIC packages.

Download or read book Interstate Variation in WIC Food Package Costs written by David E. Davis and published by . This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food prices within States affect avg. monthly costs of State food benefits packages provided by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) more than variations in WIC caseload composition do. In addition, cost-containment practices by State WIC agencies provide different levels of cost-savings in different areas, which also contributes to interstate variation in benefits package costs. This study examines the degree to which food prices, caseloads, & cost-containment practices influence costs of State WIC food benefits packages. The study used a scanner dataset of supermarket transactions & other sources to estimate the avg. monthly cost of WIC food benefits in several areas. Illustrations.

Book Estimating Eligibility and Participation for the WIC Program

Download or read book Estimating Eligibility and Participation for the WIC Program written by National Research Council (U.S.). Panel to Evaluate the USDA's Methodology for Estimating Eligibility and Participation for the WIC Program and published by . This book was released on 2001-08-23 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must estimate the number of people who are eligible to participate in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). These USDA estimates have come under critical scrutiny in part because the number of infants and postpartum women who have actually enrolled in the program has exceeded the number estimated to be eligible by as much as 20 to 30 percent. These high "coverage rates" have led some members of Congress to conclude that some people who participate are truly ineligible, and that funding could be reduced somewhat and still meet the needs of truly eligible persons who wish to participate. But some advocates and state WIC agencies believe that the estimates of the number of eligible persons are too low and more people who are eligible and want to participate could do so. In response to these concerns, the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the USDA asked the Committee on National Statistics of the National Research Council to convene a panel of experts to review the methods used to estimate the number of people nationwide who are eligible and likely to participate in the WIC program. The panel's charge is to review currently used and alternative data and methods for estimating income eligibility, adjunctive eligibility from participation in other public assistance programs, nutritional risk, and participation if the program is fully funded.
