Book Forecasting principles and practice

Download or read book Forecasting principles and practice written by Rob J Hyndman and published by OTexts. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forecasting is required in many situations. Stocking an inventory may require forecasts of demand months in advance. Telecommunication routing requires traffic forecasts a few minutes ahead. Whatever the circumstances or time horizons involved, forecasting is an important aid in effective and efficient planning. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to forecasting methods and presents enough information about each method for readers to use them sensibly.

Book Development of a Cloud Forecast Scheme for the GL Baseline Global Spectral Model

Download or read book Development of a Cloud Forecast Scheme for the GL Baseline Global Spectral Model written by Kenneth E. Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using forecast relative humidity (RH) from a global model, several pre-existing diagnostic RH-to-cloud schemes were tested to forecast global fractional cloud cover in a postprocessor format. Since none of the schemes tested provided a superior cloud forecast when compared to Air Force Global Weather Central's (AFGWC) operational 5LAYER cloud forecasts, a new RH-to-cloud scheme was developed by relating cumulative frequencies of forecast RH to cumulative frequencies of analyzed cloud cover from the AFGWC RTNEPH cloud analysis. This scheme creates a series of forecast time-dependent RH-to-cloud curves that can be temporally updated to account for changes in season, cloud analysis, or forecast model, The global model used was a spectral-type developed by the Geophysics Laboratory (GL) using parameterized diabatic physics presently incorporated in the operational GSM (global spectral model) at AFGWC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forecast Verification: A Practioner's Guide in Atmospheric Science, 2nd Edition provides an indispensible guide to this area of active research by combining depth of information with a range of topics to appeal both to professional practitioners and researchers and postgraduates. The editors have succeeded in presenting chapters by a variety of the leading experts in the field while still retaining a cohesive and highly accessible style. The book balances explanations of concepts with clear and useful discussion of the main application areas. Reviews of first edition: "This book will provide a good reference, and I recommend it especially for developers and evaluators of statistical forecast systems." (Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society; April 2004) "...a good mixture of theory and practical applications...well organized and clearly written..." (Royal Statistical Society, Vol.168, No.1, January 2005) NEW to the second edition: Completely updated chapter on the Verification of Spatial Forecasts taking account of the wealth of new research in the area New separate chapters on Probability Forecasts and Ensemble Forecasts Includes new chapter on Forecasts of Extreme Events and Warnings Includes new chapter on Seasonal and Climate Forecasts Includes new Appendix on Verification Software Cover image credit: The triangle of barplots shows a novel use of colour for visualizing probability forecasts of ternary categories – see Fig 6b of Jupp et al. 2011, On the visualisation, verification and recalibration of ternary probabilistic forecasts, Phil. Book New Determinants of Analysts Earnings Forecast Accuracy

Download or read book New Determinants of Analysts Earnings Forecast Accuracy written by Tanja Klettke and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial analysts provide information in their research reports and thereby help forming expectations of a firm’s future business performance. Thus, it is essential to recognize analysts who provide the most precise forecasts and the accounting literature identifies characteristics that help finding the most accurate analysts. Tanja Klettke detects new relationships and identifies two new determinants of earnings forecast accuracy. These new determinants are an analyst’s “general forecast effort” and the “number of supplementary forecasts”. Within two comprehensive empirical investigations she proves these measures’ power to explain accuracy differences. Tanja Klettke’s research helps investors and researchers to identify more accurate earnings forecasts.

Book Economic Forecasting

Download or read book Economic Forecasting written by Graham Elliott and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and integrated approach to economic forecasting problems Economic forecasting involves choosing simple yet robust models to best approximate highly complex and evolving data-generating processes. This poses unique challenges for researchers in a host of practical forecasting situations, from forecasting budget deficits and assessing financial risk to predicting inflation and stock market returns. Economic Forecasting presents a comprehensive, unified approach to assessing the costs and benefits of different methods currently available to forecasters. This text approaches forecasting problems from the perspective of decision theory and estimation, and demonstrates the profound implications of this approach for how we understand variable selection, estimation, and combination methods for forecasting models, and how we evaluate the resulting forecasts. Both Bayesian and non-Bayesian methods are covered in depth, as are a range of cutting-edge techniques for producing point, interval, and density forecasts. The book features detailed presentations and empirical examples of a range of forecasting methods and shows how to generate forecasts in the presence of large-dimensional sets of predictor variables. The authors pay special attention to how estimation error, model uncertainty, and model instability affect forecasting performance. Presents a comprehensive and integrated approach to assessing the strengths and weaknesses of different forecasting methods Approaches forecasting from a decision theoretic and estimation perspective Covers Bayesian modeling, including methods for generating density forecasts Discusses model selection methods as well as forecast combinations Covers a large range of nonlinear prediction models, including regime switching models, threshold autoregressions, and models with time-varying volatility Features numerous empirical examples Examines the latest advances in forecast evaluation Essential for practitioners and students alike

Book Forecast evaluation report

Download or read book Forecast evaluation report written by Office for Budget Responsibility and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forecast Evaluation Report (FER) assesses the accuracy of the OBR's June Budget 2010 forecast against outturn for calendar year 2010 and fiscal year 2010-11. It allows the OBR to learn where source data, methodology and its forecasting could be improved. The latest outturn data show that public sector net borrowing is now estimated at £137 billion in 2010-11. This was £12 billion lower than the OBR forecast in June 2010. The FER shows that tax receipts were higher than forecast and government expenditure lower than forecast. There was, however, an overestimate of local authority spending. Locally financed non-investment spending is currently estimated at £22.6 billion for the year, £4.4 billion lower than forecast in June 2010. Rather than drawing down their reserves to cushion spending from the impact of financial pressures, local authorities appear to have added to them - perhaps in readiness for an even tighter squeeze ahead. More timely and accurate information on local authority behaviour would make it easier to keep track of the state of the public finances, and quarterly in-year estimates of local authority current spending, which recently became available for the first time from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG), will assist in this area. The FER sets out a number of other areas in which the OBR hopes to be able to improve its forecasting methods. These include recent improvements in balance sheet analysis, access to a new model for forecasting debt interest, and a review of HM Revenue and Customs' forecasting models for stamp duty land tax, alcohol duties and business rates.
