  • Author : Giovanni Giusfredi
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2019-11-12

Download or read book Physical Optics written by Giovanni Giusfredi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 933 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a sound foundation in physical optics by covering key concepts in a rigorous but accessible manner. Propagation of electromagnetic waves is examined from multiple perspectives, with explanation of which viewpoints and methods are best suited to different situations. After an introduction to the theory of electromagnetism, reflection, refraction, and dispersion, topics such as geometrical optics, interference, diffraction, coherence, laser beams, polarization, crystallography, and anisotropy are closely examined. Optical elements, including lenses, mirrors, prisms, classical and Fabry-Perot interferometers, resonant cavities, multilayer dielectric structures, interference and spatial filters, diffraction gratings, polarizers, and birefringent plates, are treated in depth. The coverage also encompasses such seldom-covered topics as modeling of general astigmatism via 4x4 matrices, FFT-based numerical methods, and bianisotropy, with a relativistic treatment of optical activity and the Faraday and Fresnel-Fizeau effects. Finally, the history of optics is discussed.

Book The fringes of citizenship

Download or read book The fringes of citizenship written by Julija Sardelic and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book presents a socio-legal enquiry into the civic marginalisation of Roma in Europe. Instead of looking only at Roma’s position as migrants, an ethnic minority or a socio-economically disadvantage group, it considers them as European citizens, questioning why they are typically used to describe exceptionalities of citizenship in developed liberal democracies rather than as evidence for how problematic the conceptualisation of citizenship is at its core. Developing novel theoretical concepts, such as the fringes of citizenship and the invisible edges of citizenship, the book investigates a variety of topics around citizenship, including migration and free movement, statelessness and school segregation, as well as how marginalised minorities respond to such predicaments. It argues that while Roma are unique as a minority, the treatment that marginalises them is not. This is demonstrated by comparing their position to that of other marginalised minorities around the globe.

Book The Mythic Past Biblical Archaeology And The Myth Of Israel

Download or read book The Mythic Past Biblical Archaeology And The Myth Of Israel written by Thomas L. Thompson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish people's historical claims to a small area of land bordering the eastern Mediterranean are not only the foundation for the modern state of Israel, they are also at the very heart of Judeo-Christian belief. Yet in The Mythic Past, Thomas Thompson argues that such claims are grounded in literary myth, not history. Among the author's startling conclusions are these:* There never was a "united monarch" of Israel in biblical times* We can no longer talk about a time of the Patriarchs* The entire notion of "Israel" and its history is a literary fiction. The Mythic Past provides refreshing new ways to read the Old Testament as the great literature it was meant to be. At the same time, its controversial conclusions about Jewish history are sure to prove incendiary in a worldwide debate about one of the world's seminal texts, and one of its most bitterly contested regions.

Book Edges Fringes Frontiers

Download or read book Edges Fringes Frontiers written by Thomas Henfrey and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an ethnographic account of subsistence use of Amazonian forests by Wapishana people in Guyana, Edges, Frontiers, Fringes examines the social, cultural and behavioral bases for sustainability and resilience in indigenous resource use. Developing an original framework for holistic analysis, it demonstrates that flexible interplay among multiple modes of environmental understanding and decision-making allows the Wapishana to navigate social-ecological complexity successfully in ways that reconcile short-term material needs with long-term maintenance and enhancement of the resource base.

Book Application of LADAR in the Analysis of Aggregate Characteristics

Download or read book Application of LADAR in the Analysis of Aggregate Characteristics written by Linbing Wang and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "NCHRP Project 4-34, 'Application of LADAR in the Analysis of Aggregate Characteristics,' was conducted by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, with participation by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The objective of the project was to develop and evaluate a laser detection and ranging (LADAR) system capable of precise and accurate measurement of the aggregate characteristics of shape, volume, angularity, surface texture, specific surface area, and volumetric gradation. Ideally, the final system would be applicable to aggregate in three size categories--coarse (2 in. to #4), fine (#4 to #200), and microfine (P200)--and suitable for routine use in research, central, and field laboratories for Portland cement concrete and asphalt concrete mixture design and quality assurance. The project, which developed new equipment and computer algorithms, proved technically challenging. The project team developed a prototype Fourier transform interferometry (FTI) system with fully functional hardware and software. The system can characterize aggregate shape, angularity, texture, surface area, and volume of a wide range of aggregate sizes with high accuracy. Assembly and operation of the FTI system consisting of a chargecoupled device (CD) camera, a fringe source, a sample platform, and a software package are fully documented in the report. The accuracy and precision of the prototype FTI system are comparable to or better than those of other systems now available to automatically measure aggregate characteristics, but its current range of aggregate size--3/4 in. to #50--is narrower than desired. Extending this size range is possible in the future by using a CCD camera with a larger field of view and increasing the system resolution through appropriate selection of the equipment components."

Book excerpt: Rome 44 AD, Marcus Salvius Magnus has returned from three years fighting for the emperor Claudius in Britannia. As the leader of the South Quirinal Crossroads Brotherhood he must quickly re-establish his command. But he is beset with problems. Who is evicting tenants in his territory? How can he settle a debt to his patron's sister Vespasia Polla? How can he best his rivals, the West Viminal Brotherhood, who thwart him at every turn? Meanwhile Magnus' patron, Senator Gaius Vespasius Pollo is trying to broker a deal to illegally benefit from the booty looted from the war in Britannia, and he needs Magnus' help to carry out such an illicit task. Magnus, who doesn't leave anything up to Fortuna, is the perfect man for the job. He must use the resources of Rome's criminal underworld to find a way to regain control, appease his patrons, and of course, to make a profit. ______________________________________________ Don't miss Robert Fabbri's epic new series Alexander's Legacy
