Book Forbes ASAP Big Issues

Download or read book Forbes ASAP Big Issues written by Forbes ASAP and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation′s leading opinion makers converge to address technology and its impact on society and business The Forbes ASAP annual Big Issue is the most important magazine special in all of high technology. It has been hailed as "the last great bastion of the essay" by author Stanley Crouch. It is historian Stephen Ambrose′s favorite publication to write for, and Tom Wolfe has made it the home for more of his original essays than any other publication in the last decade. Each of the five Big Issues has tackled a burning social question as it relates to technology, including the new meaning of work, the changing nature of time in the digital age, the great convergence (work/play, public/private, science/religion), and what is true. And each issue brings together the best writers and thinkers in search of answers. Big Issue contributors have come from business (Bill Gates, Andrew Grove), science (E. O. Wilson, Stephen Jay Gould), literature (John Updike, Reynolds Price, Elmore Leonard), history (John Keegan, Jacques Barzun), politics (Gore Vidal, Peggy Noonan), sports (Muhammad Ali), and religion (the Dalai Lama). Sixty–three of the best essays from the first five Big Issues are complied in this new collection, with an original foreword by longtime Big Issue fan Peter Jennings.

Book Surviving Supply Chain Integration

Download or read book Surviving Supply Chain Integration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-04-23 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The managed flow of goods and information from raw material to final sale also known as a "supply chain" affects everythingâ€"from the U.S. gross domestic product to where you can buy your jeans. The nature of a company's supply chain has a significant effect on its success or failureâ€"as in the success of Dell Computer's make-to-order system and the failure of General Motor's vertical integration during the 1998 United Auto Workers strike. Supply Chain Integration looks at this crucial component of business at a time when product design, manufacture, and delivery are changing radically and globally. This book explores the benefits of continuously improving the relationship between the firm, its suppliers, and its customers to ensure the highest added value. This book identifies the state-of-the-art developments that contribute to the success of vertical tiers of suppliers and relates these developments to the capabilities that small and medium-sized manufacturers must have to be viable participants in this system. Strategies for attaining these capabilities through manufacturing extension centers and other technical assistance providers at the national, state, and local level are suggested. This book identifies action steps for small and medium-sized manufacturersâ€"the "seed corn" of business start-up and developmentâ€"to improve supply chain management. The book examines supply chain models from consultant firms, universities, manufacturers, and associations. Topics include the roles of suppliers and other supply chain participants, the rise of outsourcing, the importance of information management, the natural tension between buyer and seller, sources of assistance to small and medium-sized firms, and a host of other issues. Supply Chain Integration will be of interest to industry policymakers, economists, researchers, business leaders, and forward-thinking executives.

Download or read book William Gibson written by Gary Westfahl and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading figure in the development of cyberpunk, William Gibson (born in 1948) crafted works in which isolated humans explored near-future worlds of ubiquitous and intrusive computer technology and cybernetics. This volume is the first comprehensive examination of the award-winning author of the seminal novel Neuromancer (and the other books in the Sprawl trilogy, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive), as well as other acclaimed novels including recent bestsellers Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, and Zero History. Renowned scholar Gary Westfahl draws upon extensive research to provide a compelling account of Gibson's writing career and his lasting influence in the science fiction world. Delving into numerous science fiction fanzines that the young Gibson contributed to and edited, Westfahl delivers new information about his childhood and adolescence. He describes for the first time more than eighty virtually unknown Gibson publications from his early years, including articles, reviews, poems, cartoons, letters, and a collaborative story. The book also documents the poems, articles, and introductions that Gibson has written for various books, and its discussions are enriched by illuminating comments from various print and online interviews. The works that made Gibson famous are also featured, as Westfahl performs extended analyses of Gibson's ten novels and nineteen short stories. Lastly, the book presents a new interview with Gibson in which the author discusses his correspondence with author Fritz Leiber, his relationship with the late scholar Susan Wood, his attitudes toward critics, his overall impact on the field of science fiction, and his recently completed screenplay and forthcoming novel.

Philosophical issues, such as musical cognition, the philosophy of research theory, curriculum, and educating musically, are also explored in relationship to policy issues. In addition to surveying the literature, each chapter considers the significance of the research and provides suggestions for future study.Covering a broad range of topics and addressing the issues of music education at all age levels, from early childhood to motivation and self-regulation, this handbook is an invaluable resource for music teachers, researchers, and scholars.

Book Internet Guide to Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital

Download or read book Internet Guide to Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital written by Sabine Pekarz and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2002-03-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This survey has shown that, although the internet is full of information, it is difficult to find the information required fast. Before starting an internet survey, it is essential to be conscious of the intention of the search and the expected results and to translate this into one or more keywords. The intention of the keyword searches knowledge management and intellectual capital was to find out how the topic is treated on different pages. The categorization by content has shown that a main part of the links can be assigned in the advertisement categories. This is the case for both, the hits of MetaCrawler and those of Umap. A further community of the results of the two search instruments is that the catego-ries knowledge base and best practices only take a small part whereas the categories content discussion and collection of resources are relatively well-attended. Great importance has been attached to the categorie content discussion in the index and chapter 6 is fully dedicated to interesting links concerning the content. This is because the discussion of the topics, combined with definitions and explanations, is the background and the basis for the rest of the categories. As the assignment to the categorie content discussion does not declare anything about the quality of the discussions, the index in chapter 4 has to be included in the study. Strictly speaking, a great part of those links is dedicated to advertisement and gives some explanations concerning the topics. It has been detected that most of the pages with content discussion give only a short introduction into the topic. The pages that examine the topics more closely are an exception to the rule. Five links of this minority are introduced in chapter 6. Two of them are very interesting pages concerning the content. They are listed at top position, because different opinions concerning knowledge management and intellectual capital are introduced, the topics are treated in great detail and the explanations are good and quite easy to duplicate. In order to find out, if the results are capable to represent the totality, the reliability of the categorization, built up with Umap (artificial intelligence) and that built by human intelligence have been analyzed with the means of hypothesises. The test of the hypothesises, that are based on a comparison of the results and processes of the categorizations, has shown that the categorization by [...]

The author follows the facts, the trends, and the stories that make up history and parlays them into forecasts for what he sees coming next. Ultimately, you'll get a review of previous trades and a new Trade of the Decade.
