Book excerpt: The only way to truly understand what it was like to fight in the Second World War is to listen to the experiences of those men who were there. And often, there was nowhere more dangerous than on the ground. In Footsloggers, Peter Hart reconstructs one infantry battalion's war in staggering detail. Based on his interviews with members of the 16th Durham Light Infantry, Hart bears witness not only to their comradeship, suffering, dreadful losses and individual tragedies, but also their courage and self-sacrifice as they fought their way across North Africa, Italy and Greece. This is a human look at the inhuman nature of war from the author of At Close Range and Burning Steel.

Book War Through the Eyes of a Child

Download or read book War Through the Eyes of a Child written by Violet Apted and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine if you will, living through World War II in England. The times were traumatic and terrifying. Now imagine that you are seeing the war Through the Eyes of a Child. Author Violet Apted describes what her life was like as a young girl in Ashford Kent in the years 1939 to 1945. Experience her perception of the events, as well as the restrictions placed on her and the effects this had on her life. British children during the war years experienced a vastly different childhood from today. They witnessed the deaths of family and friends, and faced the reality that their own lives were in constant danger. Yet the naivety and boundless innocence of a child weaves its way throughout this heartwarming story. Violet and her childhood friends were never sure if there would be a tomorrow. You will feel this young girl's fears and share her hopes, as she remembers the horrors and dangers that no child should ever have to know. Perhaps if we take Violet's story to heart we can learn from history's mistakes, and no longer will we know War, Through the Eyes of a Child. Violet Apted's mother used to say she was born with a pen in her hand. Now retired, the author lives in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. War, Through the Eyes of a Child is her fourth book. "This is the book I always planned to write." The fifth is underway.

Book Bombing States and Peoples in Western Europe 1940 1945

Download or read book Bombing States and Peoples in Western Europe 1940 1945 written by Claudia Baldoli and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to treat bombing during WWII as a European phenomenon and not just the 'Blitz' on Britain and Germany. With Western Europe now at the heart of a united continent, it is even more difficult to explain how only 70 years ago European states destroyed much of the urban landscape from the air. There were many blitzes between 1940 and 1945 with an estimated 700,000 people killed. The purpose of this book is to provide the basis for a comparison of the experience of western states under the impact of bombing. In particular, it considers the political, cultural and social responses to bombing rather than the military, strategic and social dimensions which have formed the core of the discussion hitherto. This book will correct the popular perception of the British Blitz as the key bombing experience by exposing the reality of life under the bombs for communities as far apart as Brest, Palermo, and Rostock. An international panel of historians consider the issues raised amidst the bombing of human rights and protection of civilians in this seminal event in C20th history.

Book Tommy s War

  • Author : Richard van Emden
  • Publisher : A&C Black

Download or read book Tommy s War written by Richard van Emden and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional histories of the Great War have tended to focus on the terrible attritional battles of Ypres, of Arras and of the Somme. What they do not tell us is what life was like for the ordinary soldier, what mattered to him, and how he survived, both physically and mentally. Now for the first time, one of Britain's leading military historians, Richard van Emden tells the story of the Great War exclusively through the words and images of soldiers on the ground. In Tommy's War, he gathers some of the very best first-hand material written about the War, some of it published at the time and forgotten, some of it previously unpublished, but all of it wonderfully descriptive and immediate, and often wickedly funny. Tommy humour, frequently very dark, played a vital part in men's mental survival, particularly in times of great stress. Until now its critical role in victory has been overlooked. Richard van Emden restores the balance, giving weight to the soldiers' natural inclination to laugh during their darkest moments. Illustrating these eyewitness accounts with soldiers' own photographs taken on privately owned cameras, often tiny Vest Pocket Kodaks – the smart phones of their day – van Emden has created an entirely new and fresh history of the Great War, giving us a glimpse of 'Tommy Atkins' as he has never been seen before.

Book TOMMY McGEE at WAR

Download or read book TOMMY McGEE at WAR written by J.P. Dolan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tommy McGee at War is set in the Port of Fremantle during WWII and shows how teenagers and adults interact during such times of stress. The characters in the story are Tommy McGee and his gang, the Holy Smokes, who are in constant war with the opposition gang, the Stinking Head Shea Gang, led by Stinking Head Shea himself. There is also Sergeant Major John Daly, who is known to Tommy as Uncle Jack and is the founder and leader of Z Force, which is based on the mysterious and forbidding Garden Island. Finally, there is Poacher Kenworthy, who, with his reputation of being a very bad man, strikes terror in the hearts of the boys. There are also general characters filling in the story to help create the atmosphere of wartime. The story starts out by establishing the area of operations, how the Holy Smokes got their name, and the details about their meeting place, the Place, which is a large flat rock on the edge of the Swan River and is overlooked by the lookout tree, which is strategically placed on the corner of Poacher Kenworthy's five-acre orchard; this enables the boys to keep tabs on the Stinking Heads and also on any ripening fruits in the orchard. There are skirmishes as the defences of the Place are tested and how, after retaliating by the Stinking Heads, a girl named Ingrid is inducted into the Holy Smokes. It is during one of their meetings at the Place that they discover that Poacher has found a way into the heavily defended Port of Fremantle. Uncle Jack, with Z Force, is having troubles when his navigator goes ack-willy (an army term for AWL) and puts in jeopardy an operation in Java to attack the Japanese-held Port of Padang. The navigator is caught by the civilian police and put into Fremantle Gaol. This sets in motion a series of events which leads to the discovery of a tunnel built by the original convicts, which leads directly to Fremantle Gaol, and with the help of the Holy Smokes, the navigator is retrieved. During this operation, they are seen, and because of a lack of communications, a battle between the home guard and the civil defence unit takes place almost on top of where they are all hiding. It would appear that it would be almost impossible to get the navigator back to Garden Island using existing transport. They decided to take him out through Fremantle Harbour, and much to the boys' horror, Poacher is co-opted to lead. The rescue is successful after a great deal of effort but with the loss of Tommy's dinghy, which was blown to bits by the defence guns. Some time later, Uncle Jack gathers all the Holy Smokes together and gives a very detailed description of the successful attack on Padang Harbour and how they had escaped back to Australia, hotly pursued by the Japanese all the way down the coast of Sumatra, through the Sunda Strait, and back to Broome, which had just been bombed by the Japanese. Finally, Tommy is presented with a dinghy which had been captured from a Japanese destroyer.

Book excerpt: Second Lieutenant Tommy Hart, a navigator whose B-25 was shot out of the sky in 1942, is burdened with guilt as the only surviving member of his crew. Now he is just another POW at the fiercely guarded Stalag Luft 13 in Bavaria. Then routine comes to a halt with the arrival of a new prisoner: First Lieutenant Lincoln Scott, an African American Tuskegee airman who instantly becomes the target of contempt from his fellow soldiers. When a prisoner is brutally murdered, and all the blood-soaked evidence points to Scott, Hart is tapped to defend the soldier. In a trial rife with racial tension and raw conflict, where the lines between ally and enemy blur, there are those with their own secret motives, and a burning passion for a rush to judgment, no matter what the cost.

Book excerpt: Bertrand William Sinclair's 'When the War Ends Book Set' is a collection of poignant stories that immerse readers in the aftermath of war, exploring themes of loss, resilience, and hope. Sinclair's evocative literary style captures the emotional complexities of the characters as they navigate life post-conflict, resonating with readers on a deeply human level. Set against the backdrop of historical wartime events, the stories offer a unique insight into the lasting impact of war on individuals and communities. As a veteran himself, Sinclair draws on his own experiences and observations to craft these powerful narratives that provide a compassionate portrayal of the challenges faced by those returning from war. His insights into the human psyche and the effects of trauma add depth and authenticity to the stories, making them both compelling and thought-provoking. I highly recommend 'When the War Ends Book Set' to readers interested in exploring the psychological and emotional aftermath of war, as well as those drawn to character-driven, introspective fiction.
