Download or read book Road Warriors written by Daniel Byman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, fighters from abroad have journeyed in ever-greater numbers to conflict zones in the Muslim world to defend Islam from-in their view-infidels and apostates. The phenomenon recently reached its apogee in Syria, where the foreign fighter population quickly became larger and more diverse than in any previous conflict. In Road Warriors, Daniel Byman provides a sweeping history of the jihadist foreign fighter movement. He begins by chronicling the movement's birth in Afghanistan, its growing pains in Bosnia and Chechnya, and its emergence as a major source of terrorism in the West in the 1990s, culminating in the 9/11 attacks. Since that bloody day, the foreign fighter movement has seen major ups and downs. It rode high after the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, when the ultra-violent Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) attracted thousands of foreign fighters. AQI overreached, however, and suffered a crushing defeat. Demonstrating the resilience of the movement, however, AQI reemerged anew during the Syrian civil war as the Islamic State, attracting tens of thousands of fighters from around the world and spawning the bloody 2015 attacks in Paris among hundreds of other strikes. Although casualty rates are usually high, the survivors of Afghanistan, Syria, and other fields of jihad often became skilled professional warriors, going from one war to the next. Still others returned to their home countries, some to peaceful retirement but a deadly few to conduct terrorist attacks. Over time, both the United States and Europe have learned to adapt. Before 9/11, volunteers went to and fro to Afghanistan and other hotspots with little interference. Today, the United States and its allies have developed a global program to identify, arrest, and kill foreign fighters. Much remains to be done, however-jihadist ideas and networks are by now deeply embedded, even as groups such as Al Qaeda and the Islamic State rise and fall. And as Byman makes abundantly clear, the problem is not likely to go away any time soon.

Download or read book Minnesota s Golden Age of Wrestling written by George Schire and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 2010 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was Minnesota, a land known for its stoic farmers, reasonable politics, and comfortable casseroles, a hotbed of the wacky and wild world of professional wrestling? And how did that old-school wrestling become the Saturday night program of choice for thousands of midwestern families in the last half of the twentieth century? Professional wrestling historian and insider George Schire is here not only to set the record straight but to entice you into a world gone by, a world that comes alive through his colorful and perceptive reporting. As a kid, Schire found a way to escape the troubles of his life by becoming a wrestling fan, glued to the TV set and then later traveling to see every live "card" in the Twin Cities and many more throughout the region. Over the years he has been involved in all aspects of the sport, and he now offers detailed, behind-the-scenes accounts of important matches from 1954 to 1990 and stories of wrestler personalities, both in and out of the ring. He shares his own extensive collection of wrestling memorabilia-- photographs, program covers, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera--to honor the hardworking characters who forged serial storylines onstage week after week and who thrilled fans by carrying out their plots in the ring, with blood, sweat, tears, and high-flying body slams for all. An avid historian, George Schire has been a writer and columnist for national wrestling publications and a ring announcer. He currently cohosts a popular Internet wrestling show, "Old School/New School." He lives in Oakdale, Minnesota. "I thought I knew the sport of professional wrestling. Then I met George Schire! No one is more knowledgeable about the events and personalities that made professional wrestling what it is today." --Greg Gagne, former professional wrestler and titleholder

Download or read book Road Warriors written by JoAnn Morris Matthews and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road Warriors Life Lessons is an inspiration. It is based on personal knowledge of experiences learned in driving lessons taught the author by her father. Power dominates the driver of a vehicle as he takes the vehicle out onto an open road. The sense of command and control equally affects males and females. Maneuvering a vehicle skillfully is not a childs experience to be taken lightly. There are lessons gleaned from the narrator of this book of real-life ventures. Schoolinstructed drivers education courses combined with parental supervision mold preteen and teen lessons. This book demonstrates safety and guidance through actions bent toward humor and realism. Driving is a privilege offered during teen years. That privilege comes with responsibility to be viewed seriously by all drivers. The humor illustrated in the storyline is easily adaptable to the readers everyday life involving the world of driving a vehicle. It is much easier to grin or laugh at another persons errors or mishaps than own them. Better to experience through third-party humor than actually feel the effects of any of the books scenarios. Driving defensively is an art. Safety first does not mean much until driving students think of that safety in terms of his life and the lives of others on the road. One Life Lesson -- Remember sheet metal can be replaced; body parts are not easily repaired. Vehicles roll off an assembly line, not your body. We encounter so many experiences up close and personal when learning to drive a vehicle. Let those experiences be due to safe, defensive driving techniques.
