Book excerpt: My Beautiful Daughter is an inspirational true story about a daughters fight against drug addiction through the eyes of her mother. Louise goes from a happy contented child, to a self destructive drug addict. The impact that it would have on her family especially her parents is key to it all. The story starts where the mother is looking back over the years to when it began, and how she coped with trying to help her daughter, but at the same time having to come to terms with the fact that she may lose her. It covers the constant battle over the lack of help and advice for parents from the professionals. Whilst dealing with her grief on a daily basis, she struggles to understand why this is happening. Then she has to come to terms with the revelation that a terrible event caused her beautiful daughter to take heroin in the first place, leaving the whole family distraught. Finally as her daughter battles to stay clean, a serious life threatening health problem is diagnosed which is one of the consequences of her years of drug abuse. Every time her mother thinks that its nearly over, another challenge emerges and another fight begins. This is a very emotionally charged account of pure desperation from her parents, determined to get back the daughter they feel is lost to them, never giving up hope and at times barely keeping sane, and while their daughter fights her addiction they have to face up to the trauma that led to her drug abuse.

Download or read book Beautiful Failures written by Lucy Clark and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I want to tell you a story about my daughter, my beautiful failure. Every day of her high school life was a struggle. She woke up in the morning and the thought of going to school was like an enormous mountain to climb. 'Nothing will ever be as easy as your school years,' well-meaning adults told her, but I knew for my daughter, and for many kids who have struggled as square pegs trying to make themselves round, this was dead wrong. When Lucy Clark's daughter graduated from school a 'failure', she started asking questions about the way we measure success. Why is there so much pressure on kids today? Where does it come from? Most importantly, as we seem to be in the grip of an epidemic of anxiety, how can we reduce that pressure? Beautiful Failures explores, through personal experience and journalistic investigation, a broken education system that fails too many kids and puts terrible pressure on all kids, including those who 'succeed'. It challenges accepted wisdoms about schooling, calls on parents to examine their own expectations, and questions the purpose of education, and indeed the purpose of childhood."

Download or read book Aztecs on Stage written by and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nahuatl drama, one of the most surprising results of the Catholic presence in colonial Mexico, merges medieval European religious theater with the language and performance traditions of the Aztec (Nahua) people of central Mexico. Franciscan missionaries, seeking effective tools for evangelization, fostered this new form of theater after observing the Nahuas’ enthusiasm for elaborate performances. The plays became a controversial component of native Christianity, allowing Nahua performers to present Christian discourse in ways that sometimes effected subtle changes in meaning. The Indians’ enthusiastic embrace of alphabetic writing enabled the use of scripts, but the genre was so unorthodox that Spanish censors prevented the plays’ publication. As a result, colonial Nahuatl drama survives only in scattered manuscripts, most of them anonymous, some of them passed down and recopied over generations. Aztecs on Stage presents accessible English translations of six of these seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Nahuatl plays. All are based on European dramatic traditions, such as the morality and passion plays; indigenous actors played the roles of saints, angels, devils—and even the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Louise M. Burkhart’s engaging introduction places the plays in historical context, while stage directions and annotations in the works provide insight into the Nahuas’ production practices, which often incorporated elaborate sets, props, and special effects including fireworks and music. The translations facilitate classroom readings and performances while retaining significant artistic features of the Nahuatl originals.
