Book Rose Rose I Love You

Download or read book Rose Rose I Love You written by Chen-ho Wang and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively translation of Wang Chen-ho's ribald satire, a Taiwanese village loses all perspective—and common sense—at the prospect of fleecing a shipload of lusty and lonely American soldiers. A rotund, excitable high school English teacher receives word that 300 GIs are coming from Vietnam for a weekend of R and R. He persuades the owners of the Big 4 brothels that they will all take in more U.S. dollars if the pleasure girls can speak a little English; his plan is to train fifty specially selected prostitutes in a "Crash Course for Bar Girls." The teacher, Dong Siwen (his name means "refinement") enlists the eager support of local Councilman Qian and the managers of such elite establishments as Night Fragrances and Valley of Joy. "If the girls learn how to say three things in English— Hello, How are you? and Want to do you-know-what? everything is A-OK!" But what begins as a simple plan to teach a few English phrases quickly becomes absurdly elaborate: courses will include an "Introduction to American Culture," a crash course on global etiquette, and a workshop in personal hygiene taught by Dr. "Venereal" Wang. Siwen, a virgin himself, dreads any bad P.R. from "Saigon Rose" (slang for a particularly virulent strain of v.d.) and so demands the finest conveniences and conditions for "servicing the Yanks." "Sanitation above all.... Do you think U.S. dollars will float out of their pockets in crummy rooms like that?" The Americans must not leave with a poor impression of Taiwan; not only Dong Siwen and the Big 4 but the entire nation would lose face. One of the most carefully wrought narratives in contemporary Chinese literature, Rose, Rose, I Love You will appeal not only to readers of fiction but also to those interested in Taiwanese identity and the effects of Westernization on Asian society.

Book excerpt: Gillian Rose was a star academic, acclaimed as one of the most dazzling and original philosophers today (Edward Said was among those who said we MUST publish this). But Gillian also had cancer, and the news that she only had months to live made her determined to explore who she was, and what she had been seeking so long. LOVE'S WORK is as vivid and carefully structured as a novel, circling like memory from the small fierce girl torn between a demanding father and genial, feckless stepfather to the adolescent confronting her Jewish inheritance, from the passionate friend to the searcher for truth, from the sensual woman in love to the patient in the hospital bed. Passionate funny, heartbreakingly honest, LOVE'S WORK faces death in a way that is almost exhilarating: genuinely unforgettable.

Haydn, the most famous composer in Europe, met her and demanded her attention, with the relationship continuing until his death in 1809. Peter Hobday balances an intimate account of her life with convincing historical detail to produce an accomplished portrait of the age.

Book excerpt: What happens when the kids leave for college and you remember you're not just mom, but a woman too? Simply going through the motions, on autopilot day after day, weighed heavily on me. The one thing which bonded my husband and me, before the kids came along, was slowly cast aside as their needs grew more demanding. Intimacy became an act; a performance, without the desire, passion, and lust we once shared. My need to feel desired and wanted by my husband ate at me and I was determined to make him see the woman he married. I wasn't going to give up and hatched a plan, one which would hopefully forge a new beginning for us. Fighting to keep our love alive was a risk, but, for us, I was prepared to do anything.

Book excerpt: Praise for Cunt: "Bright, sharp, empowering, long-lasting, useful, sexy."--San Francisco Chronicle "Cunt does for feminism what smoothies did for high-fiber diets--it reinvents the oft-indigestible into something sweet and delicious."--BUST "Cunt is one of the most dangerous books I ever read, ever."--Robin D. G. Kelley With trademark precision and razor-sharp wit, Inga Muscio explores the impacts of passive violence, abuse, war, and cultural trauma on our most intimate lives in order to uncover a path toward healthy and imaginative sex and love. Rose breaks new ground in answering a fundamental question in most feminist and anti-racist writing: how do we identify, witness, and then recover from trauma--as individuals, as families, as communities, and as a country? Muscio's ability to address dire topics with a unique freshness and bravery allows her readers to come face to face with the true brutality of a violent culture, and then react powerfully with righteous rage and hopeful determination. Chilling, eye-opening, and thoroughly enjoyable, Rose offers a truly new and exhilarating perspective on achieving empowerment and self-possession. Book How Literary Worlds Are Shaped

Download or read book How Literary Worlds Are Shaped written by Bo Pettersson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary studies still lack an extensive comparative analysis of different kinds of literature, including ancient and non-Western. How Literary Worlds Are Shaped. A Comparative Poetics of Literary Imagination aims to provide such a study. Literature, it claims, is based on individual and shared human imagination, which creates literary worlds that blend the real and the fantastic, mimesis and genre, often modulated by different kinds of unreliability. The main building blocks of literary worlds are their oral, visual and written modes and three themes: challenge, perception and relation. They are blended and inflected in different ways by combinations of narratives and figures, indirection, thwarted aspirations, meta-usages, hypothetical action as well as hierarchies and blends of genres and text types. Moreover, literary worlds are not only constructed by humans but also shape their lives and reinforce their sense of wonder. Finally, ten reasons are given in order to show how this comparative view can be of use in literary studies. In sum, How Literary Worlds Are Shaped is the first study to present a wide-ranging and detailed comparative account of the makings of literary worlds.
