Book excerpt: Meet Alyssa Dashiell-attractive, gifted young attorney, relishing the wellearned reward of a few moments to herself behind the wheel of a founding partner's Bugatti Veyron, the world's fastest car. Powerless to resist taking the once-in-a-lifetime experience to its extreme, she gains the attention of Police Officer Connor Daeman-an encounter that proves life-changing for both in ways neither could imagine. A fast-flowing chain of events rapidly unfolds; enthralling, hold-yourbreath occurrences that lead inexorably to what will be called the trial of the century-a powerful courtroom drama, as provocative as it is divisive, that pits two of the world's finest lawyers against each other in a contest that puts everything on the line, with the potential to abolish centuries of hard-earned rights for millions. It is a trial, controversial, incendiary, and tainted with madness, that sets the stage to blow the lid off the naïve belief that there are some things that just can't happen in America. Suspenseful, alarming, and destined for controversy, Decision and Dissent is to be counted among those rare novels that require courage on the part of the reader; virtually every page will affect the reader like no story he or she has ever read before. Explosive action, humour, and provocative points of view expressed by characters who leap to life will hold the reader spellbound to the very last page.

Book excerpt: On her 16th birthday, Maggie Drum sets out from the grimy streets of her Scottish coalmining town to find a man of pride, independence and spirit fit enough to be her husband. She finds her man in Gillon Cameron, a tall fisherman from the Highlands, who will learn to go down into the mines yet refuse to settle for the grinding poverty of the coal miner's life. In a world that treats coal miners as little more than slaves, Maggie's steely determination and Gillon's abiding pride stake their claim to a better future for themselves and seven children. Robert Crichton, author of The Secret of Santa Vittoria, brings his stellar storytelling gifts to this sweeping family epic, capturing the Camerons' moments of triumph and loss, bitterness and love set in the magnificent landscapes and social battles of 19th century Scotland. First published in 1972, and a New York Times bestseller for more than five months, The Camerons draws you in with what at first appears to be a straightforward family drama, then captivates you by the complexity and depth of the Camerons' struggle to create a future of hope and triumph.

Book Suspense and Resolution in the Films of D W Griffith

Download or read book Suspense and Resolution in the Films of D W Griffith written by George Pavlou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a significant and original contribution to studies on D.W. Griffith and film, through a systematic analysis of the director’s chase scenes, which create suspense and resolution in his films. The predominance of the emphasis of building suspense differs in the various stages of his chase scenes. The primary source of material discussed here is Griffith’s films after 1913 when he left the Biograph Company. Griffith’s post-Biograph films are more complete and representative of his techniques than his earlier films, which were subject to financial constraints while he was still innovating and developing his cinematic techniques. Most of his films used in this analysis were provided by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The purpose of this study is to determine a definition of a Griffithian chase scene in terms of his editing techniques. Categories are established, defining specific tools. This is done by determining and documenting consistencies, comparisons, and specific patterns occurring in his chase scenes that generally do not occur in his general editing. Griffith’s basic mechanics in editing are filmic time and space, parallel action, referential crosscutting, and decomposition. A major finding in this book is that Griffith’s chase scenes are the most important part of his films in terms of suspense and resolution. His chase scenes are complex, unique and sometimes even unpredictable. As such, this is an important new work on D.W. Griffith, and will be of interest to scholars and others interested in both the director and film, and will also be an asset to libraries and bookstores.
