Book Talking Democracy at the United Nations

Download or read book Talking Democracy at the United Nations written by Sophie Eisentraut and published by Nomos Verlag. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Enhancing U S Leadership at the United Nations

Download or read book Enhancing U S Leadership at the United Nations written by and published by Council on Foreign Relations. This book was released on 2002 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhanced American leadership at the United Nations serves the US interest and can also help strengthen the UN and the international system. This potential has been undermined, however, by several obstacles, some created by the United States (the withholding of treaty-obligated dues), and some that are inherent in the UN system (the regional group structure). This report suggests ways to build further support for democratization around the world, promote respect for human rights principles, and co-operate more fully in the war against terrorism. While it is critical of certain discrepancies within the UN system, the task force acknowledges that many UN programmes are both essential and effective. It seeks to build on these gains to promote sustainable democracy, a larger role for the United States, and more systematic co-operation between the United States and the European Union within the UN.

Book The Implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change

Download or read book The Implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change written by Vesselin Popovski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2015, 196 parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted the Paris Agreement, seen as a decisive landmark for global action to stop human- induced climate change. The Paris Agreement will replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2020, and it creates legally binding obligations on the parties, based on their own bottom-up voluntary commitments to implement Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The codification of the climate change regime has advanced well, but the implementation of it remains uncertain. This book focuses on the implementation prospects of the Agreement, which is a challenge for all and will require a fully comprehensive burden- sharing framework. Parties need to meet their own NDCs, but also to finance and transfer technology to others who do not have enough. How equity- based and facilitative the process will be, is of crucial importance. The volume examines a broad range of issues including the lessons that can be learnt from the implementation of previous environmental legal regimes, climate policies at national and sub-national levels and whether the implementation mechanisms in the Paris Agreement are likely to be sufficient. Written by leading experts and practitioners, the book diagnoses the gaps and lays the ground for future exploration of implementation options. This collection will be of interest to policy-makers, academics, practitioners, students and researchers focusing on climate change governance.

Download or read book The Third United Nations written by Tatiana Carayannis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third UN is the ecology of supportive non-state actors-intellectuals, scholars, consultants, think tanks, NGOs, the for-profit private sector, and the media-that interacts with the intergovernmental machinery of the First UN (member states) and the Second UN (staff members of international secretariats) to formulate and refine ideas and decision-making at key junctures in policy processes. Some advocate for particular ideas, others help analyze or operationalize their testing and implementation; many thus help the UN 'think'. While think tanks, knowledge brokers, and epistemic communities are phenomena that have entered both the academic and policy lexicons, their intellectual role remains marginal to analyses of such intergovernmental organizations as the United Nations.
