Book excerpt: German and English display, despite their genetic relatedness, a number of structural differences, which have their sources in the historical development of the two languages. Yet do all these differences fit with the frequently made claim that English is 'less precise' than German? The present study contributes to this discussion. It contains an empirical comparison of the syntactic behaviour of verbs in a particular register: broadcast football commentary. With the practical application of the valency model for the descriptive analysis, further aspects of language are discussed, such as the notion of verb valency in connection with spoken language, the relation between context-specific and "general" language, motivations for language production and differences between grammatical license and usage. This book shows that research on authentic spontaneous speech is possible and important to complement comparative studies based on written texts or grammatical intuition.

Qualitative analyses reveal how natural audiences behave in the reception situation appropriating live televised football through talk. Gerhardt shows how the mainly English television viewers use an array of linguistic and embodied resources to turn watching football into a meaningful activity in their groups. Cohesive devices and sequentiality link the fans’ talk-in-interaction to the televised text (commentary and pictures). Gaze behaviour, pointing, and even jumping up and down are used as resources for a variety of functions like the construction of an identity as football fan.

The data analysed is the match between England and Germany in the World Cup game of 26th October 2010 which was broadcasted live on German and English TV (ARD/BBC). The commentators of this game were Bela Rethy for ARD and Guy Mowbray with co-commentator Mark Lawrenson for BBC.
