The core of the volume consists of strategies and actions targeted to sectors of societyâ€"government, the private sector, the health professions, the education communityâ€"that have special responsibilities for encouraging and enabling consumers to eat better. These recommendations form the basis for three principal strategies necessary to further the implementation of dietary recommendations in the United States.

Book Early Nutrition and its Later Consequences New Opportunities

Download or read book Early Nutrition and its Later Consequences New Opportunities written by Berthold Koletzko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health problems such as hypertension, tendency to diabetes, obesity, blood lipids, vascular disease, bone health, behaviour and learning and longevity may be ‘imprinted’ during early life. This process is defined as ‘programming’ whereby a nutritional stimulus operating at a critical, sensitive period of pre and postnatal life imprints permanent effects on the structure, physiology and metabolism. For this reason, academics and industry set-up the EC supported Scientific Workshop -Early Nutrition and its Later Consequences: New Opportunities. The prime objective of the Workshop was to generate a sound exchange of the latest scientific developments within the field of early nutrition to look for opportunities for new preventive health concepts. Further, a closer look was taken at the development of food applications which could provide (future) mothers and infants with improved nutrition that will ultimately lead to better future health. The Workshop was organised by the Dept. of Pediatrics, University of Munich, Germany in collaboration with the Danone Institutes and the Infant Nutrition Cluster, a collaboration of three large research projects funded by the EU.

Book Food Products Evolution Innovation Drivers and Market Trends

Download or read book Food Products Evolution Innovation Drivers and Market Trends written by Angela Tarabella and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-29 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern awareness of nutrition issues can be understood correctly if considered the destination of a historic journey, the critical aspects and outcomes of which have led to the current situation. In fact, over time there have been changes to scientific knowledge, food availability and processing and preservation methods. Commercial exchange has increased considerably between the countries of the world – so much so that it has defined a completely different scenario to the past and has influenced food availability, distribution models, preservation methods and the composition of individual foodstuffs. The products consumed on a daily basis throughout the world in industrialised countries have undergone review by the food industry, incorporating great aspects of innovation that make them highly different in their structure, content and even the packaging that protects and contains them. After covering the subject of innovation in the food sector, this Brief of work will discuss the various first- and second-generation product categories distributed in Europe starting from the period of post-war reconstruction, in order to illustrate the reasons that led to their birth and development on the market. Specific examples are shown for each proposed class, including highlights of their properties, technologies, innovation potential, related regulations, and distinctive features.

Book Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools

Download or read book Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools written by Committee on Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-08-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food choices and eating habits are learned from many sources. The school environment plays a significant role in teaching and modeling health behaviors. For some children, foods consumed at school can provide a major portion of their daily nutrient intake. Foods and beverages consumed at school can come from two major sources: (1) Federally funded programs that include the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), the School Breakfast Program (SBP), and after-school snacks and (2) competitive sources that include vending machines, "a la carte" sales in the school cafeteria, or school stores and snack bars. Foods and beverages sold at school outside of the federally reimbursable school nutrition programs are referred to as “competitive foods” because they compete with the traditional school lunch as a nutrition source. There are important concerns about the contribution of nutrients and total calories from competitive foods to the daily diets of school-age children and adolescents. Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools offers both reviews and recommendations about appropriate nutrition standards and guidance for the sale, content, and consumption of foods and beverages at school, with attention given to foods and beverages offered in competition with federally reimbursable meals and snacks. It is sure to be an invaluable resource to parents, federal and state government agencies, educators and schools, health care professionals, food manufacturers, industry trade groups, media, and those involved in consumer advocacy.

Download or read book Evaluating Critical Care written by William J. Sibbald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring the quality of a complex service like critical care that combines the highest technology with the most intimate caring is a challenge. Recently, con sumers, clinicians, and payers have requested more formal assessments and comparisons of the quality and costs of medical care [2). Donabedian [1) pro posed a framework for thinking about the quality of medical care that separates quality into three components: structure, process, and outcome. An instructive analogy for understanding this framework is to imagine a food critic evaluating the quality of a restaurant. The critic might comment on the decoration and lighting ofthe restaurant, how close the tables are to each other, the extent ofthe wine list and where the chef trained. These are all evaluations of the restaurant structure. In addition, the critic might comment on whether the service was courteous and timely - measures of process. Finally, the critic might comment on outcomes like customer satisfaction or food poisoning. Similarly, to a health care critic, structure is the physical and human resources used to deliver medi cal care. Processes are the actual treatments offered to patients. Finally, outcomes are what happens to patients, for example, mortality, quality of life, and satisfac tion with care (Table 1). There is a debate about which of these measurements is the most important measure of quality.
