Book excerpt: The transformation of the dominant model of centralized energy production from fossil fuels to renewable energies is at the center of the public and scientific debate, as well as the subject of national and European policies, as it is connected to highly topical issues such as climate change, emissions reduction and natural disasters, security of supply and sustainability of the current economic development model. Up to now this topic has been mainly addressed by the economic and engineering sciences, with a research focus on the hardware rather than on the human and social software. However, energy systems, and the possibilities of change, are not only economic or technological but involve also patterns of social life, representations, organizational models and relational structures. In order to generate the social preconditions for the transition to a low-emission society, focused on a growing production of energy from renewable sources and on a greater sustainability of consumption, it is therefore urgent to reaffirm the centrality of a sociological approach to energy. This book focused on three core research areas which are crucial to understand what is at stake with the energy transition: conflicts over the construction and location of renewable energy production plants; collective action on renewable sources that promote a new model of energy system in which consumers are also producers; and the social-territorial impact of energy policies.

It is generally defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition is based on the ethical imperative of equity within and between generations. Moreover, apart from meeting; "the basic needs of all"; sustainable development implies sustaining the natural life support systems on Earth, and extending to all the opportunity to satisfy their aspirations for a better life. Hence, sustainable development is more precisely defined as a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development, and institutional change are all in harmony and enhance both current and future potential to meet human needs and aspiration. To date, various definitions and stationary-state criteria of sustainability have been proposed. Many authors have been concerned with only part of the problem, such as the technological assumptions, the ability to substitute natural resources in economic transformation processes, and the resilience and importance of ecological processes. But, the social dimension did not receive the same attention, and has not been adequately integrated into formal analysis. The engineering community has to play an important role in sustainable development with appropriate evaluation of the engineering systems. In this respect energy, water and environment systems require multi-criteria evaluation methods for the assessment of the economic, environmental and social aspect of the systems.

Book excerpt: Switzerland's Energy Strategy 2050 requires energy efficiency to be substantially improved, the proportion of fossil fuels in the energy supply to be considerably reduced, and nuclear power to be phased out, while meeting highly ambitious climate protection targets. One of the core implications is the need for a massive increase of the use of renewable sources for electricity generation. In this context, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) estimates that by 2050 deep geothermal energy could contribute 4–5 TWh per year to electricity generation in Switzerland, which would be a substantial contribution to a projected annual power need of 60 TWh. Geothermal energy is attractive because of the very large scale of the resource, its expected relatively low CO2 emissions, and its reliable, all-day domestic availability. However, the future contribution of deep geothermal energy is subject to major uncertainties: How much of this resource can be exploited and at what economic cost? What are the environmental and risk-related externalities that the public must be willing to bear? How does its overall performance compare to competing energy resources? And will the regulatory framework and public acceptance be sufficient to allow geothermal energy to provide a significant contribution? By way of this major interdisciplinary study, already considered a work of reference, TA-SWISS provides answers to these questions in a comprehensive and balanced way, thereby supplying a sound basis for stakeholder decision-making.

La struttura del libro rispecchia tale approccio sperimentale, a partire dall’esplorazione di alcuni temi e metodi preliminari, esaminati nella sezione “Saggi”; proseguendo attraverso lo strumento del “mapping” e la raccolta degli esiti del confronto con l’amministrazione comunale, l’ambiente e le persone che abitano quei luoghi; giungendo, infine, alla messa a sistema e ad una “sintesi” delle informazioni e delle indagini effettuate attraverso le proposte progettuali, descritte nella sezione “Progetti”. Per risolvere le criticità esistenti, ma anche per valorizzare le potenzialità e i diversi patrimoni del territorio di Acerra, le proposte progettuali sono state costruite attraverso un meccanismo di innesto e connessioni nell’esistente, non orientato alla definizione di una forma compiuta e di una funzione predeterminata, ma che, al contrario, ha consentito di lavorare su un’idea di forma aperta, che ha riutilizzato quanto esiste, che ha incluso molteplici possibilità di uso e che ha cambiato continuamente la propria perimetrazione, estendendosi e inglobando pezzi urbani di diversa natura. Scenari di nuovi possibili significati e nuove trasformazioni urbane sono, dunque, il risultato di questo lavoro, composto da diversi livelli di approfondimento legati all’idea generale di Acerra come città di spazi dell’apprendimento diffusi.
