Book The Effects of Using Phonetic Spelling Mini Lessons on Making and Writing Words with First Grade Students

Download or read book The Effects of Using Phonetic Spelling Mini Lessons on Making and Writing Words with First Grade Students written by Jeana L. Lane and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many teachers ask themselves at the beginning of each year how they are going to help their students make growth in reading and spelling. Some years helping students achieve growth is easy, while other years it is a struggle. Every year, first grade teachers in the Cedar Rapids Community School District are challenged to meet the goal of all students reading at grade level by the end of their second-grade year. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of providing additional spelling lessons would have on students' reading and seplling abilities. Implemente was Timothy Rasinski's approach, Making and Writing Words in the First Grade. This approach was meant to help improve students' ability to decode words by way of teaching a planned sequence of phonics elements. The lessons used were paced and aligned to match the Cedar Rapids Community School District's reading curriculum. Although more research would be needed to determine if growth was contributed conclusively to the Making and Writing Words approach, results showed growth in all areas of reading and spelling. An increase in reading fluency was also indicated. The growth made during the research period provided teachers another method to help students read at grade level by the end of their second-grade year.
