Book The Lost Geopoetic Horizon of Li Jieren

Download or read book The Lost Geopoetic Horizon of Li Jieren written by Kenny Kwok-kwan Ng and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaged with the paradigms of cultural geography, local history, spatial politics, and everyday life, The Lost Geopoetic Horizon of Li Jieren unveils a Sichuan writer’s lifelong quest: an independent historical fiction writing project on Chengdu from the turn of the century through China’s 1911 Revolution. Kenny Kwok-kwan Ng's study illuminates the crisis of writing home in a globalized age by rescuing Li Jieren’s repeatedly revised but never finished river-novel series written from Republican to Communist China, struggling to liberate local memory from the national cum revolutionary currents. The book undercuts official historiography and rewrites Chinese literary history from the ground up by highlighting Li’s resilient geopoetics of writing that decenters the nation by adopting the place-based view of a distant province.

Book excerpt: Perhaps nowhere in America did three distinct and diverse cultures create such a colorful tapestry of the social fabric which forms the backdrop of this book. "Bulldogs Forever" is a history of a New Mexico school, Albuquerque High School, from its founding in 1879 to the author's graduation in 1954. The book effectively relates the reflections of teenagers from the waning pioneer days of the late 19th century to the Golden Era that followed World War II. The author, an outstanding athlete, relates how the team sports of football, basketball and baseball played a major role in the feeling of togetherness, belonging and accomplishment in a school of culturally diverse students. "Bulldogs Forever" pays tribute to teachers, coaches, teammates and students in a nostalgic look at high school life.

Book Struggle and Suffrage in Leatherhead

Download or read book Struggle and Suffrage in Leatherhead written by Lorraine Spindler and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The road to suffrage for the women of Leatherhead was often bumpy and unwelcomed by men and women alike. The Women’s Suffrage Caravan rolled into Leatherhead on Saturday, 16 May 1908, its presence inciting riots amongst many of the menfolk. The town’s Unionist Club in December 1908 passed the motion that it was ‘unpropitious’ for legislation on the question of women’s suffrage and yet, from behind the closed door of her home in Belmont Road, women’s rights campaigner Marie Stopes had begun to pen Married Love; suffrage campaigner Dame Millicent Fawcett would fascinate her audience at Victoria Hall in 1910; and Emmeline Pankhurst’s arrest and detention at Leatherhead police station would capture the interest of the nation, placing Leatherhead centre stage of the push towards revolution in women’s rights.By the arrival of the First World War, middle-class girls were not allowed out without a chaperone, few married women had a job and no woman was allowed the vote. It was the general view that politics and work were only suitable for men. By the arrival of the Second World War Leatherhead’s women were still expected to live up to the typical housewife persona, where their main role in life was to bring up the children and do the housework. The husband was usually the head of the house, and his word was law to both his children and his wife, the one expected to look after the children.Using numerous primary sources, this fully illustrated book tells the story of numerous famous and ordinary women who lived and visited Leatherhead between 1850 and 1950; Ella Neate, born into a family of local grocers, who discovered a talent for operetta; Pearl Kew, one of the first women in the town to own a car, enabling her to drive to work as a teacher in Guildford; the charity work of Cherkley Court’s Letitia Dixon; Emily Moore the Swan Innkeeper, these many more fascinating stories of local women whose lives have hidden in the shadows of Leatherhead’s menfolk.

Download or read book Good Night Sweetheart Good Night The Love Story of Ray Harrison Lillibridge and Marguerite Jenike Lillibridge written by James Lowell Hall and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While growing up in South Dakota, Ray Lillibridge saw Sioux Indian chief Sitting Bull, witnessed the Children's Blizzard of 1888, and lived through prairie fires, grasshopper infestations, and times of want. But when he moved to Delavan, Illinois, in the early 1900s to live with his uncle, he had no idea that destiny was already guiding him to the love of his life. In a compilation of letters, recollections, and photographs, James Lowell Hall leads others through the love story of Ray Lillibridge and Marguerite Jenike as they courted each other, fell in love, corresponded, and bridged the ten-mile gap between their homes. The book gives a glimpse of life and hardships in America over one hundred years ago, recounting Ray's internal struggles, Marguerite's devotion to her faith and family, and the legacy they left behind. Good Night, Sweetheart, Good Night shares the true love story of a young couple at the turn of the twentieth century as they created a life together.
