Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Modern Greece: With Introductions, Translations, and Notes In preparing this edition of modem Greek songs my object has been to produce a work of interest both to the lover of folk-lore in general, and to the classical scholar in particular. I have avoided, to the best of my knowledge, including any poems previously published in Western Europe, and this limitation has naturally compelled me to reject pieces often of equal and sometimes of superior merit to any contained in the present collection. On the other hand, I have endeavoured by adding an elaborate commentary to render the collection, such as it is, more useful than a mere compilation. In the text my aim has been all through to retain, as far as possible, the classical spelling, carefully marking all places where a letter or syllable has dropped out. Book excerpt: When this work - one that contributes to both the history and anthropology fields - first appeared in 1982, it was hailed as a landmark study of the role of folklore in nation-building. It has since been highly influential in reshaping the analysis of Greek and European cultural dynamics. In this expanded edition, a new introduction by the author and an epilogue by Sharon Macdonald document its importance for the emergence of serious anthropological interest in European culture and society and for current debates about Greece's often contested place in the complex politics of the European Union.

Book Placing Modern Greece

Download or read book Placing Modern Greece written by Constanze Guthenke and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-02-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing Modern Greece is about literary representations of Greece in the period of Romanticism, encompassing the time in the 1820s when it became a territorial and political reality as a nation state. Constanze Guthenke claims that the imagining of and attitude towards Greece was shaped by a fascination with the material, and by the highly conceptualized tension between the ideal on the one hand, and the material on the other. Her study focuses on nature and landscape imagery as vehicles of representation, on their specific inner workings, and on their dynamic, which conditions how and whether Greece as a modern entity in the making can be represented at all. Offering readings from German and contemporaneous Greek authors, Guthenke supplies a commentary on the translation and crossings of representational models and their limits.

Book excerpt: Enlarged paperback, 84 pages (2nd ed.2023): English translation of modern Greek poetry, includes an academic review, translator's introduction and 3 Appendices. Glossy colour cover / black & white interior. What is the connection between ancient Greek culture, folk lore, and Greek citizens in the 3rd millennium? The poet, a respected lawyer in Athens, Greece, opens a window for the reader into his inner world. He unfolds his ethics and aesthetics by exploring variations on three themes: a) Insights into moments that seem to be "frozen" in ancient Greek history; b) the musings of a modern-day philosopher and poet; and c) the folk songs, history and folklore of the poet's native Epirus. Poignant and evocative, this poetry (original text written in Greek by Augerinos Andreou, English translation by translator, Connie Stamos) reflects life in the countryside as well as urban living: the rich tapestry that makes up Greece today. The tiller of the times (2nd ed. 2023) and Tracing the times (2nd ed. 2023) are also available as eBooks. Dr Maria Sidiropoulou, Professor of Translation Studies, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens reviews the English translation of the Tiller of the times by Connie Stamos.
