Dubbed by Dr. Gerald Stone in his study of the European Sorbs as The Smallest Slavonic Nation, the group has occupied a geographical area of Germany, called Lusatia, since at least the 9th century A.D. Because of a small population and the failure to establish its own nation, name recognition of the Sorbs is not wide-spread, and knowledge of the group's culture is even more obscure. Thankfully, there have been individuals who, since the 19th century have captured cultural features of the group and recorded them. Two of the individuals, Joachim Leopold Haupt, a German, and Johann Smoler (Schmaler), a Sorb, were contemporaries who, together, in 1843 compiled folksongs from Upper and Lower Lusatia and titled the study Volkslieder der Sorben in der Ober-und Niederlausitz. In addition to and in explanation of the many folksongs these two men compiled, they took their work to another level when they also collected and published Wendish folk tales, fairy tales, proverbs and customs practiced by the Wends of Lusatia. Nearly a century later another German, Edmund Schneeweis, used the work of Haupt and Smoler and many others as a springboard to expand the horizons of Wendish folklore as the basis of his own study of celebrations and folk practices of the Sorbs and published Feste und Volksbräuche der Sorben. This volume, a translation of Feste und Volksbräuche der Sorben, immerses the reader into the fascinating world of Wendish folklore. Schneeweis has masterfully laid out a brief yet quite thorough description of what it meant to be a Wend in the mid 1800's. Virtually every aspect of Wendish life has been covered, from the cycle of life (birth to death), the events of life (baptism to funeral) as well as events of the year (New Year to Christmas). The reader will be surprised and entertained at how Schneeweis shows that Christian faith and gross superstition shaped the very lives of the early Wends.
