The limitation of available resources and the economic and climatic costs of energy inevitably lead to light constructions as a necessary means of curtailing consumption. The documented workshops “Flying Structures” and "Fold Fly Inflate" investigates and tests how those light structures can be digitally fabricated and parametrically designed using lasercutting and 3D printing technology. The resulting prototypes were developed in a collaborative process.

Book Design and Fabrication of Large Polymer Constructions in Space

Download or read book Design and Fabrication of Large Polymer Constructions in Space written by Alexey Kondyurin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Fabrication of Large Polymer Constructions in Space is a ground-breaking study of the polymeric materials, advanced chemical processes, and cutting-edge technology required in the construction of large polymer-based structures for space, when all steps in the process are carried out in the space environment, whether in orbit, in deep space, or on the surface of a moon, asteroid, or planet. The book begins by introducing the fundamentals and requirements of large constructions and inflatable structures for space. The next section of the book focuses on the utilization of polymeric materials within the space environment, examining the effects on materials (vacuum, plasma, temperature), the possible approaches to polymerization both in space and in orbit, the preparation and structure of polymer composites, and the methods for testing materials and structures in terms of strength, defects, and aging. Three chapters then cover how these materials and techniques might be applied to specific categories of construction, including larger space habitats, supporting space structures, and ground infrastructure. Finally, the financial aspects, the consequences for human space exploitation, and the possible future developments are discussed.Using materials science to push the boundaries of construction for space exploration and exploitation, this book is a unique resource for academic researchers and advanced students across polymer science, advanced materials, chemical engineering, construction, and space engineering, as well as for researchers, scientists and engineers at space agencies, companies and laboratories, involved in developing materials or technology for use in space. This is also of great interest to anyone interested in the role of materials science in the building of large space stations, spacecraft, planetary bases, large aperture antenna, radiation and thermal shields, and repairmen sets. Describes the role of polymers in the construction of large space habitats, supporting space structures, and ground infrastructure Explains polymerization in the Earth’s orbit and in space, covering material specifications, control of curing, and the effects of interaction with the external environment Presents the possible testing methods, including strength evaluation, defect detection, and aging tests of materials and constructions

Book 100 Amazing Make It Yourself Science Fair Projects

Download or read book 100 Amazing Make It Yourself Science Fair Projects written by Glen Vecchione and published by Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This extensive collection of do-it-yourself projects ranges from simple ideas using household materials to sophisticated plans which are unique."--Booklist "[There are] many good projects."--Appraisal "The directions are clear and straightforward."--VOYA From a device that makes sounds waves visible to a unique "pomato" plant, these 100 imaginative and impressive science projects will impress science fair judges and teachers--and astound all the kids in the school. Some of the experiments can be completed quickly, others take more time, thought, and construction, but every one uses readily available materials. Budding Einsteins can make their own plastic, build a working telescope, or choose from a range of ideas in electricity, ecology, astronomy, and other scientific fields.

Book Flight Deck Part 2

Download or read book Flight Deck Part 2 written by Edward Atkins and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 1 Available here: http://bookstore.abbottpress.com/Products/SKU-000523603/Flight-Deck-Part-1.aspx This absolutely unique book contains 355 superb full-size photographs (Part 1 has 204 and Part 2 has 151) which document life on the flight deck of a fleet WWII aircraft carrier where the Airdale (flight deck crewman) goes in harms way each and every day, such as during aircraft launch operations (among the slashing 13-foot diameter propellers powered by 2,000-hp engines), during aircraft landings (putting out conflagrations from possible aircraft crashes) and during the parking of aircraft (when standing but a few feet from a possible hail of shrapnel). Then one should not omit the devastation of possible Kamikaze (suicide) assaults from above. Each of the 355 photo(s) has a fulsome caption, in the first-person, describing in detail, both subjectively and objectively, the contents of the picture. Many, many of the photos are deserving of being shown in their own frames of wood or displayed on large TV screens (the naval photographer mates who took these pictures are indeed outstanding craftmen). Finally, this book (Parts 1 & 2) is quite literally one of a kind for ALL time (being the first, and the last, one EVER written about this subject (in the 1st person).

Book Biology of Snail Killing Sciomyzidae Flies

Download or read book Biology of Snail Killing Sciomyzidae Flies written by Lloyd Knutson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for academic researchers and graduate students in entomology, this is the first comprehensive analysis of Sciomyzid flies. Sciomyzid flies are important as prime candidates for the biological control of snails and slugs that help transmit diseases such as schistosomiasis or are important agricultural pests. They also serve as a paradigm for the study of the evolution of feeding behavior in predatory insects. Starting with analyses of malacophagy in general and then in Diptera specifically, all important aspects of the Sciomyzidae are discussed, including behavior, ecology, life cycles, morphology, and identification. New behavioral and morphological classifications and hypotheses are proposed on the basis of unpublished information and a complete analysis of the extensive literature. Also included are keys to adults, larvae and puparia and a checklist of world species, with information on geographical range and the location of type specimens. The accompanying DVD includes Clifford O. Berg's classic film on the biology of Sciomyzidae and biological control of snails.

Book Ground and Flight Evaluation of a Small Scale Inflatable Winged Aircraft

Download or read book Ground and Flight Evaluation of a Small Scale Inflatable Winged Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small-scale, instrumented research aircraft was flown to investigate the flight characteristics of inflatable wings. Ground tests measured the static structural characteristics of the wing at different inflation pressures, and these results compared favorably with analytical predictions. A research-quality instrumentation system was assembled, largely from commercial off-the-shelf components, and installed in the aircraft. Initial flight operations were conducted with a conventional rigid wing having the same dimensions as the inflatable wing. Subsequent flights were conducted with the inflatable wing. Research maneuvers were executed to identify the trim, aerodynamic performance, and longitudinal stability and control characteristics of the vehicle in its different wing configurations. For the angle-of-attack range spanned in this flight program.
