Download or read book Fodder and Pasture Plants Classic Reprint written by George H. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fodder and Pasture Plants Agriculture is an art that renders those who understand it rich, but leaves those who do not understand it. However much they may labour in it, to live in poverty - Xenophon, 434 - 355, bc. When we consider that about one-third of the improved land in Canada is under fodder and forage crops, the importance of dis seminating information respecting fodder and pasture plants must be apparent to all. That the interest taken in these plants really is very great is amply illustrated by the numerous inquiries that have been received during recent years by the Department Of Agriculture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasture Grasses and Forage Plants, and Their Seeds, Weeds, and Parasites Others again advocate the use of forage plants and grasses hitherto unknown to our agriculture, and so far has all this gone that a large section of the agricultural public is puzzled what guide to follow. Again it may be noted - ii one may draw inferences from the queries addressed to the agricultural press, and from the results of many conversations held by the writer with farmers, and with people who sell seeds in different parts of the United Kingdom - that there is a surprising lack of information on the subject of the parasites that injure or destroy the forage plants and the weeds that rob or stifle them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastures and Pasture Plants In the compilation of a treatise on any craft, the recorded experience of great authorities must of necessity be consulted, if not, to some extent, form the basis of such treatise; and though we have striven in the pages following to concisely summarise chiefly our own experiences in pasture-making from carefully kept records covering nearly 100 years' work, we have great pleasure in specially acknowledging our indebtedness to the following works: - 1. The scattered writings of Mr. William Carruthers, F.R.S., F.L.S., the accomplished consulting botanist to the Royal Agricultural Society, who unites to Sinclair's exact knowledge of pasture plants probably the most precise and extended acquaintance with English pastures ever yet attained, and to whose kindly and untiring courtesy is due much of what merit may lie in this manual. 2. The scattered writings of Sir John Bennett Lawes, F.R.S., LL.D., of Rothamsted, whose profound knowledge of the subjects he has made his own is equalled by his willingness to impart information, and to whom also we owe much special and invaluable help. 3. The works, especially The Best Forage Plants, a laborious and singularly accurate translation from the German by Mr. A. N. McAlpine, B.Sc, botanist to the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, and Les Melanges de Graines Fourrageres, done into French by M. C. Denaiffe, of Dr. G. Stebler, whose long experience as Director of the Swiss Experiment and Seed Control Station enables him to speak with special authority on forage plants and their seeds, and whose esteemed and kind assistance we gratefully acknowledge. 4. G. Sinclair's Hortus Gramineus Woburnensis, still our standard work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasture Plants and Pastures of New Zealand His little is published in the hope that it may prove useful to both farmers and students. No other crop approaches grass in importance, and yet in many parts of the country no other crop is so little studied. A good deal of attention has been devoted in the following pages to the means of recognising the various grasses, as it is considered that the ability to recognise the different varieties is the surest way to induce a study of their habits and capabilities. On this study depends the solution of the most important of all problems facing the New Zealand farmer, namely: What is the best grass mixture to sow on my land? Book Fodder Crops and Amenity Grasses

Download or read book Fodder Crops and Amenity Grasses written by Beat Boller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-14 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassland farming in Europe was already established during the settlement of the rst farmers together with their domesticated animals after the last ice age. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed. Although the vegetative biomass and its quality are of utmost imp- tance in forage crop breeding, it is the seed yield potential which determines the commercial success of a new variety.

Book Napier Grass Pennisetum Purpureum

Download or read book Napier Grass Pennisetum Purpureum written by Carroll Paton Wilsie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum): A Pasture and Green Fodder Crop for Hawaii From the relatively high protein content Shown in table 6 it seems probable that the samples were taken from the plant crop when the forage was leafy and immature. Langer states further (6, p. 65) that tests Of the digestibility Of Napier grass have Shown its nutritive ratio to be which com pares very favorably with the better-quality grasses. Further trials on the digestibility Of this grass are needed, for it must be remembered that the nutritive ratio of a grass is much narrower in an immature grass than in a mature one. For feeding young growing calves and dairy cows in milk, Napier grass should be cut at a rather immature stage, with the plants from 3 to 5 feet in height, so as to get the higher protein content, while for fattening beef cattle it might be fed at a Slightly more advanced stage in growth.
