Book The Architecture of Focus

Download or read book The Architecture of Focus written by Valéria Molnár and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection investigates the architecture of focus in linguistic theory from different theoretical perspectives. Research on focus and information structure in the last four decades has shown that the phenomenon of focus is highly complex, the theoretical approaches manifold, and the data highly sensitive. The main emphasis has been placed on the integration of the notion of focus in generative grammar. In recent years, however, the approaches to focus and information structure underwent a radical change in perspective. The theoretical concept of focus, its related terms and phenomena became the object of research. Along with it, the research questions shifted: instead of locating focus in the architecture of grammar, linguists investigate the architecture of focus itself. The central underlying idea of this collection is to document this change in perspective with the aim of isolating essential keystones and research areas in both the theoretical and empirical domain. The book is structured accordingly. Following the introduction, there are four main sections: The general section discusses the theoretical foundations of focus within grammar. The second section hosts papers which investigate the representation of focus and topic at the syntax-pragmatics interface. The third section discusses the phonological representation of focus and its relation to meaning. The papers of the final section investigate different types of focus constructions in a variety languages. The collection of papers on the architecture of focus, its interpretation and representation mirror the establishment of the focus research field.

Book Ellipsis and Focus in Generative Grammar

Download or read book Ellipsis and Focus in Generative Grammar written by Susanne Winkler and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering linguistic research on empty categories over more than three decades, this monograph presents the result of an in-depth syntactic and focus-theoretical investigation of ellipsis in generative grammar. The phenomenon of ellipsis most generally refers to the omission of linguistic material, structure and sound. The central aim of this book is to explain on the basis of linguistic theorizing of how it is possible that we understand more than we actually hear. The answer developed throughout this book is that ellipsis is an interface phenomenon which can only be explained on the basis of the complex interaction between syntax, semantics and information structure. Scholars of grammar and cognitive scientists will profit from reading this book.

Book excerpt: Butterflies in your stomach. Thinking about the last shot, game, or presentation. Worrying about letting down teammates or coaches. Wondering, "do I really have what it takes?" Just hoping you will be ready when your time comes isn't good enough. You need a plan to make sure of it. Right now, you aren't paying attention to what the bottom of your feet feel like. Your brain doesn't think it's important. Most of the time this automatic filter helps keep you safe, but no elite athlete has ever won a championship simply "playing it safe." What if you could train, improve, and ultimately fine-tune your brain's automatic reactions to stressful situations to help you perform at a higher level? This book will serve as a guide to help you develop a customized plan to control your mind and body in Big Moments. In 1999 I coached my first little league baseball team, and it was the first time I coached confidence into players. Admittedly, I was just trying to win more games at the time, but it began a 20+ year journey into helping individuals perform at their best when it matters the most. As a high school coach, I have worked with countless athletes who needed a little extra help in the mental side of their game. In 2013, our team was blown out in a state championship game. After talking with players who had been great for us all year but weren't ready for that stage, I realized our entire team needed tools and skills to perform in Big Moments. We brought in experts. We hired sports psychologists. We went to clinics and dove into our own research that offseason. But we still needed something that each of our players could implement to address their individual struggles. It was then that the Focus Cycle was born. The Focus Cycle is a framework that fits any age and any situation. Individuals have implemented these skills and tools in state championships, national championships, and even the aftermath of car accidents where clear thinking and quick decisions were critical. This framework has been used in little league diamonds, professional sports arenas, board rooms across the country, and everywhere in between. No matter where you find yourself needing to think, act, or perform at your best, the Focus Cycle can help! Purchase your copy today or reach out to us at mentaltrainingplan.com for information about large quantity purchases for your team, department, or company.

Book The Cardinal Cornerstone for MES Success

Download or read book The Cardinal Cornerstone for MES Success written by Daniel B. Cardinal and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical Problem or Adaptive Challenge? Before a design organization develops a new computer system to support a manufacturing process, strategists need to understand what they are facing. Will their designers have to confront a series of technical problems or adaptive challenges? Technical problems have known solutions that most designers clearly understand. However, this means they will solve problems using existing organizational practices. An adaptive challenge means the organization will face problems that individually have many possible solutions. To find the correct set of solutions, the organization must experiment and adapt over time. Many design organizations ignore the fundamental differences between technical problems and adaptive challenges. As a result, engineering and IT planners mistakenly believe that they only need to hire specialists to solve technical problems. They expect these specialists to use the latest technologies and/or adopt some agile development process. These technology-focused designs or faith-based processes produce applications that have many undesirable anomalies, idiosyncrasies, and outliers. The information contained in this book enables strategists to stop adapting to challenges and start solving problems. The information defines and describes how low-level design fundamentals affect manufacturing processes and upper-level system designs. It specifically identifies the many technical problems designers will face, variable methods for solving them, and expected outcomes. This information enables an organization to adopt the best practices before starting a design. This sets up a knowledge-based development process where designers understand technical problems, adopt the correct set of fundamentals, and make the necessary improvements to machines and system designs.
