Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we embody the values of love, grace, and justice? As faith communities, how can our collective embodiment of these values shine even brighter? The answers to these questions must always unfold right here, right now, exactly where God has planted us. Neighborhood Churchacts as a resource to inspire churches to become a vibrant and engaging community partner with the families and neighborhoods living around them. The need for transformation is acute. Congregational decline continues across all mainline denominations. The abandonment of the church by the millennial generation is ubiquitous; no denomination is escaping it. This is, in part, a consequence of disconnection from our communities. Van Tatenhove and Mueller believe that, parish by parish, we can reverse this trend. They dare to have an audacious hope for local congregations not only as signs of Gods kingdom but as life-giving institutions that anchor their neighborhoods. Drawing on their combined sixty years of parish experience, wisdom from Asset-Based Community Development, and compelling case stories, Van Tatenhove and Mueller do more than just call us to incarnational ministry. They give practical, essential tools that lead to communal conversion, develop the DNA of listening, spur fruitful partnerships, promote integrated space, and sustain long-term visions. They believe these tools will spark true revival and unleash the power of incarnational ministry.

Book A Heart for the Community

Download or read book A Heart for the Community written by John Fuder and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our nation used to look at violence, poverty, and gentrification and assign those problems to urban centers. Today, these issues concern the suburbs, too. The Christian community is responding to this reality. Churches and parachurch ministries are actively working to transform lives and restore communities throughout the city and suburbs. In A Heart for the Community: New Models for Urban and Suburban Ministry, you will be challenged by a collection of voices seeking community renewal. These individuals are involved in creative church planting initiatives, and they are serving the growing Hispanic and Muslim populations. Additional endeavors include serving racially changing communities, economic development strategies, and more. As anyone who has been in ministry for any length of time can attest, tackling some of the most challenging issues of our times is no mere academic exercise. The voices within these pages write from experience and offer workable, vibrant models of ministry that make a difference.

Book The Surprising Return of the Neighborhood Church

Download or read book The Surprising Return of the Neighborhood Church written by Sam Rainer and published by Tyndale House Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opportunity Lies Right Down the Road. There’s hope for your church. Respected church expert Sam Rainer envisions an exciting new wave of revitalized neighborhood churches that are growing and thriving. In the not-so-distant past, churches tended to relocate away from their neighborhoods and build large campuses at major intersections. At the turn of the 21st century, a dramatic shift occurred: A new generation began looking to neighborhood churches to foster life-giving friendships, provide opportunities for service, and create a community dedicated to worshiping God. Sam Rainer describes this movement and answers the most common questions about this surprising new phenomenon: What are the marks of a healthy neighborhood church? What are the most common myths about the neighborhood church? What are the obstacles to church growth? What are the best strategies to reach your neighbors? The neighborhood church is primed for a comeback. The potential is huge. God wants to do incredible things. Are you ready?

Book Trusting in Resurrection

Download or read book Trusting in Resurrection written by Kathryn Lewis Mowry and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the phenomenon of congregations in transitional neighborhoods (CTNs) in North America and offers a paradigm of resurrection to lead such churches to greater faithfulness. The study demonstrates a research methodology providing insider perspectives on the church's interface with its neighborhood, which are then critiqued by a re-reading of Scripture. Five congregations, who self-identify as moving from a niche focus to a parish focus in a changing neighborhood, are studied using ethnographic observation in the communities, participant observation in congregational life, and active interviews. Reliability and validity are increased by within-case analysis, presented in case study format. The study then moves to cross-case analysis, using grounded theory to reveal themes across all five congregations. The resulting themes fall into three clusters: Anxiety motivations, Reign of God motivations, and Decision Points about Acceptable Degree of Displacement. The experiences of the covenant community of Israel provide a comparison to the findings of the qualitative research project. The covenant community was to live in trust and extend mishpat and sedaqah to the neighborhood. They were most often pulled away from covenant faithfulness by anxiety and the urge to help God deliver them. The prophets call them back to faithfulness through the exercise of prophetic imagination. CTNs demonstrate this same anxiety, which leads to obsession with results in the present and colonization of imagination. A paradigm of resurrection for the CTN will lead the congregation to incarnational engagement with context, cruciform ministry, and trust in resurrection developed through eschatological imagination. Practices move the congregation consistently toward greater displacement for the sake of mission, and formative worship experiences lead toward envisioning the Reign of God and dis-possessing or offering up of present forms. The most central of these experiences is eucharist, understood and practiced as eschatological event. Losses are transformed in this paradigm from negations to offerings. Finally, I offer a model to demonstrate the roles of eschatology, history, and context in the work of the CTN and recommendations for further research.

Book excerpt: Community within the church today is hemorrhaging. Attention spans are dwindling, noise levels are increasing, and we can't seem to find time for real relationships. The answer to such social fragmentation can be found in small groups, and yet the majority of small groups—at least in the traditional sense—are often not the intentional, transformational community we really want and need. Somehow we need to get our groups off life support and into authentic community. Pastor Brad House helps us to re-imagine what gospel-centered community looks like and shares from his experience leading and reproducing healthy small groups. With wisdom and candor, House challenges us to think carefully about our own groups and to take steps toward cultivating communities that are able to glorify Jesus, bless one another, and participate in the mission of God.

Book excerpt: flu·en·cy / noun :the ability to speak a language easily and effectively Even if they want to, many Christians find it hard to talk to others about Jesus. Is it possible this difficulty is because we're trying to speak a language we haven't actually spent time practicing? To become fluent in a new language, you must immerse yourself in it until you actually start to think about life through it. Becoming fluent in the gospel happens the same way—after believing it, we have to intentionally rehearse it (to ourselves and to others) and immerse ourselves in its truths. Only then will we start to see how everything in our lives, from the mundane to the magnificent, is transformed by the hope of the gospel.

Book excerpt: Church growth models have often been long on promises and short on disciple-making. We continue to watch consistent church attendance shrink, and our desire to reach the lost is infected with a need for self-validation by growing our numbers at any cost. If we believe that God wants his church to grow, where do we go from here? What is the future of the church? Drawing from his 20 years and 15,000 hours of consulting, author Will Mancini shares with pastors and ministry leaders the single most important insight he has learned about church growth. With plenty of salient stories and based solidly on the disciple-making methods found in Scripture, Future Church exposes the church's greatest challenge today, and offers 7 transforming laws of real church growth so that we can faithfully and joyfully fulfill Jesus's Great Commission.

Book The Connecting Church 2 0

Download or read book The Connecting Church 2 0 written by Randy Frazee and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of meaningful relationships, where every member carries a significant sense of belonging, is central to what it means to be the church. So why do many Christians feel disappointed and disillusioned with their efforts to experience authentic community? Despite the best efforts of pastors, small group leaders, and faithful lay persons, church too often is a place of loneliness rather than connection. In this revised and updated version of his best-selling book, Randy Frazee shows us how church can be so much...better. More intimate and alive. The answer may seem radical today, but it was a central component of life in the early church. First-century Christians knew what it meant to live in vital community with one another, relating with a depth and commitment that made "the body of Christ" a perfect metaphor for the church. What would it take to reclaim that kind of love, joy, support, and dynamic spiritual growth? Read this book and find out.

When we share in our diversity, a covenant between all parties will represent our character, ethics, and our trust in the Lord. As men and women of God, our commitment to love one another is His greatest commandment that must be adhered to with authenticity. We have an opportunity to exercise our social and business graces as a vital part of building the community and as a result we will bring the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven.
