Book Downsizing the State

Download or read book Downsizing the State written by Dag MacLeod and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1983, the Mexican government implemented one of the most extensive programs of market-oriented reform in the developing world. Downsizing the State examines a key element of this reform program: the privatization of public firms. Drawing upon interviews with government officials, business executives, and labor leaders as well as data from government archives and corporate documents, MacLeod highlights the difficulties of linking market reforms to improved public welfare. Privatization failed to live up to its promise of raising living standards or decentralizing the economy. Indeed, privatization actually increased the concentration of wealth in Mexico while redirecting the economy toward foreign markets. These findings contribute to theoretical debates regarding state autonomy and the embeddedness of economic action. MacLeod calls into question the autonomy of the Mexican state in its privatization program. He shows that the creation of markets where public firms once dominated has involved both the destruction of social relations and the construction of new relations and institutions to regulate the market.

Book Mathematical Analysis Fundamentals

Download or read book Mathematical Analysis Fundamentals written by Agamirza Bashirov and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's goal is a rigorous presentation of the fundamentals of analysis, starting from elementary level and moving to the advanced coursework. The curriculum of all mathematics (pure or applied) and physics programs include a compulsory course in mathematical analysis. This book will serve as can serve a main textbook of such (one semester) courses. The book can also serve as additional reading for such courses as real analysis, functional analysis, harmonic analysis etc. For non-math major students requiring math beyond calculus, this is a more friendly approach than many math-centric options. - Friendly and well-rounded presentation of pre-analysis topics such as sets, proof techniques and systems of numbers - Deeper discussion of the basic concept of convergence for the system of real numbers, pointing out its specific features, and for metric spaces - Presentation of Riemann integration and its place in the whole integration theory for single variable, including the Kurzweil-Henstock integration - Elements of multiplicative calculus aiming to demonstrate the non-absoluteness of Newtonian calculus

Book TEXTBOOK OF FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS

Download or read book TEXTBOOK OF FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS written by V. K. KRISHNAN and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique, comprehensive and student-friendly book, now in its second edition, continues to hold the purpose of explaining and illustrating the use of the basic theorems in functional analysis through solved numerical problems. The text has been revised on the basis of the readers’ feedback. The book now covers ample worked-out numerical problems related to the spectral properties of compact operators on Banach spaces as well as on Hilbert spaces. Inclusion of a few problems based on the square root of a positive operator also contributes to the major highlights of this edition. Such a practical approach will greatly facilitate students to have a thorough grasp of the subject. This stands in stark contrast to the method followed in most of the books where a great amount of theory is given with a smattering of problems to elucidate the topics discussed. Intended as a text for the students pursuing postgraduate courses in mathematics, this book with its systematic and precise presentation and provision of a large number of exercises should prove to be a trendsetter in its approach to the subject. This novelty of approach appeals the students in particular.

The papers are organized in topical sections on - software engineering and MAS prototyping - agent reasoning, BDI logics, and extensions - social aspects of multi-agent systems

Book Railroad Radicals in Cold War Mexico

Download or read book Railroad Radicals in Cold War Mexico written by Robert F. Alegre and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the Mexican government's projected image of prosperity and modernity in the years following World War II, workers who felt that Mexico's progress had come at their expense became increasingly discontented. From 1948 to 1958, unelected and often corrupt officials of STFRM, the railroad workers' union, collaborated with the ruling Institutionalized Revolutionary Party (PRI) to freeze wages for the rank and file. In response, members of STFRM staged a series of labor strikes in 1958 and 1959 that inspired a nationwide working-class movement. The Mexican army crushed the last strike on March 26, 1959, and union members discovered that in the context of the Cold War, exercising their constitutional right to organize and strike appeared radical, even subversive. Railroad Radicals in Cold War Mexico examines a pivotal moment in post-World War II Mexican history. The railroad movement reflected the contested process of postwar modernization, which began with workers demanding higher wages at the end of World War II and culminated in the railway strikes of the 1950s, a bold challenge to PRI rule. In addition, Robert F. Alegre gives the wives of the railroad workers a narrative place in this history by incorporating issues of gender identity in his analysis.

Book The Burger Court and the Rise of the Judicial Right

Download or read book The Burger Court and the Rise of the Judicial Right written by Michael J. Graetz and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnitude of the Burger Court has been underestimated by historians. When Richard Nixon ran for president in 1968, "Impeach Earl Warren" billboards dotted the landscape, especially in the South. Nixon promised to transform the Supreme Court--and with four appointments, including a new chief justice, he did. This book tells the story of the Supreme Court that came in between the liberal Warren Court and the conservative Rehnquist and Roberts Courts: the seventeen years, 1969 to 1986, under Chief Justice Warren Burger. It is a period largely written off as a transitional era at the Supreme Court when, according to the common verdict, "nothing happened." How wrong that judgment is. The Burger Court had vitally important choices to make: whether to push school desegregation across district lines; how to respond to the sexual revolution and its new demands for women's equality; whether to validate affirmative action on campuses and in the workplace; whether to shift the balance of criminal law back toward the police and prosecutors; what the First Amendment says about limits on money in politics. The Burger Court forced a president out of office while at the same time enhancing presidential power. It created a legacy that in many ways continues to shape how we live today. Written with a keen sense of history and expert use of the justices' personal papers, this book sheds new light on an important era in American political and legal history.--Adapted from dust jacket.
