Book Cognitive Work Analysis

Download or read book Cognitive Work Analysis written by Kim J. Vicente and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes, for the first time in pedagogical form, an approach to computer-based work in complex sociotechnical systems developed over the last 30 years by Jens Rasmussen and his colleagues at Risø National Laboratory in Roskilde, Denmark. This approach is represented by a framework called cognitive work analysis. Its goal is to help designers of complex sociotechnical systems create computer-based information support that helps workers adapt to the unexpected and changing demands of their jobs. In short, cognitive work analysis is about designing for adaptation. The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides a motivation by introducing three themes that tie the book together--safety, productivity, and worker health. The ecological approach that serves as the conceptual basis behind the book is also described. In addition, a glossary of terms is provided. Part II situates the ideas in the book in a broader intellectual context by reviewing alternative approaches to work analysis. The limitations of normative and descriptive approaches are outlined, and the rationale behind the formative approach advocated in this book is explored. Part III describes the concepts that comprise the cognitive work analysis framework in detail. Each concept is illustrated by a case study, and the implications of the framework for design and research are illustrated by example. Part IV unifies the themes of safety, productivity, and health, and shows why the need for the concepts in this book will only increase in the future. In addition, a historical addendum briefly describes the origins of the ideas described in the book.

Book excerpt: Work and workplaces are endlessly changing and evolving in response to demographic, political, economic, technological and social trends and pressures. Work on the Move 3 has been written at a time when a radical rethinking of the workplace has proved essential due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The chapter on the hybrid workplace explores the trend toward more flexible workplaces that can blend the benefits of offices for collaborative work. The chapters on health and wellness, sustainability and design envision future workplaces that are kinder to human beings and our planet. The diversity, equity and inclusion chapter examines the issues of bias and fairness within the profession, as well as the potential that facility management can provide to those who are economically disadvantaged. The technology, real estate and facility services chapters provide insight into the practical business aspects of workplaces in the post-pandemic future. Finally, the chapter on workforce and workplace trends provides a global perspective on how all of these issues have evolved in the past and are likely to proceed into the future. As the world recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, the book helps to envision how the world can create, operate and manage inspiring, collaborative and effective the workplaces needed in the post-pandemic future.

Book Forcing the Factory of the Future

Download or read book Forcing the Factory of the Future written by Bryn Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is computerised production transforming work roles, as recent debates about flexible specialisation and post-Fordist manufacturing suggest? This book focuses on the key case of metalworking batch production in Britain, Italy, Japan and the USA. Looking at technological, political and social developments from a comparative perspective, it suggests that comprehensive factory principles never fully replaced workshop organisation. Drawing on empirical case studies of flexible manufacturing systems, Bryn Jones offers a new distinction between the bureaucratic bias of Taylorism and the product standardisation approach of Fordism, and questions whether computerised production is transcending Fordism. Instead of the often predicted models of deskilled, centrally controlled work, or a decentralised craft renaissance, he shows a greater likelihood of national variations between factory and workshop principles continuing into the contemporary age of computerisation.

It gives a review of the current state of the art of flexible and reconfigurable fixturing systems. Recent developments in design methodology using CAD are analysed in depth. Fixture design is seen as an inseparable part of process planning. Book Protocols for Multimedia Systems

Download or read book Protocols for Multimedia Systems written by Marten J. van Sinderen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference in Enschede, The Netherlands, is the sixth in a series of international conferences and workshops under the title Protocols for Multimedia Systems, abbreviated as PROMS. The first PROMS workshop took place in June 1994 in Berlin, Germany, followed by workshops in Salzburg, Austria (October 1995) and Madrid, Spain (October 1996). In 1997, PROMS formed a temporary alliance with Multimedia Networking, a conference previously held in Aizu, Japan, in 1995. This led to the international conference on Protocols for Multimedia Systems – Multimedia Networking, PROMS MmNet, that took place in Santiago, Chile (November 1997). Since then PROMS has been announced as an international conference, although informal contacts and interactive sessions – as in a workshop – were retained as a desirable feature of PROMS. After a gap of three years, PROMS was organized in Cracow, Poland (October 2000), for the fifth time. We consider it a challenge to make this sixth edition of PROMS as successful as the previous events. The goal of the PROMS series of conferences and workshops is to contribute to scientific, strategic, and practical cooperation between research institutes and industrial companies in the area of multimedia protocols. This is also the goal of PROMS 2001. The basic theme of this conference continues to be multimedia protocols, both at the network and application level, although the increasing interest in wireless, mobility, and quality of service as interrelated topics with relevance to multimedia are reflected in the current program.
