Book Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages

Download or read book Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages written by Bharat Jayaraman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-05-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages (PADL) is a forum for researchers and practitioners to present original work emphasizing novel applications and implementation techniques for all forms of declarative concepts, especially those emerging from functional, logic, and c- straint languages. Declarative languages have been studied since the inception of computer science, and continue to be a vibrant subject of investigation today due to their applicability in current application domains such as bioinformatics, network con?guration, the Semantic Web, telecommunications software, etc. The 6th PADL Symposium was held in Dallas, Texas on June 18–19, 2004, and was co-located with the Compulog-Americas Summer School on Compu- tional Logic. From the submitted papers, the program committee selected 15 for presentation at the symposium based upon three written reviews for each paper, which were provided by the members of the program committee and additional referees. Two invited talks were presented at the conference. The ?rst was given by Paul Hudak (Yale University) on “An Algebraic Theory of Polymorphic T- poral Media. ” The second invited talk was given by Andrew Fall (Dowlland Technologies and Simon Fraser University) on “Supporting Decisions in C- plex, Uncertain Domains with Declarative Languages. ” Following the precedent set by the previous PADL symposium, the program committee this year again selected one paper to receive the ‘Most Practical - per’award.

Book excerpt: In Feb. 2009, the Amer. Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) initially provided states with $87 billion in increased Medicaid funds through Dec. 2010, provided they met certain requirements. Funds were made available to states through an increase in the Fed. Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP). In March 2010, Congress passed a law which prohibits states from adopting certain changes to program eligibility in order to receive fed. reimbursement. This report examined issues related to Medicaid funds under the Recovery Act: (1) states' access to and use of increased FMAP funds; and (2) states' plans to sustain their Medicaid programs once these funds are no longer available. Book excerpt: Improve Your Haskell Programming Skills in a Weekend! This book is a "mini" language reference on Haskell, which is one of the most widely used (pure) functional programming languages. We go through all salient features of the modern Haskell programming language in this book (based on the Haskell 2010 Language Report). Although it is written as a reference, you can read it more or less from beginning to end and you should be able to get the overall picture of the Haskell language if you have some prior experience with functional programming in Haskell or other ML-style functional programming languages. This book is, however, not for absolute beginners. The book covers * Haskell software development process basics. * Haskell module system. Import and export. * Predefined types such as Char and String. * Top-level and nested declarations. * Type signatures. Function and pattern bindings. * Functions. Sections. Currying. * Conditional expressions. Case expressions. * Pattern matching. * Types. Data types. Type classes. * Basics of Functors and Monads. * Basic IO. * The Standard Prelude functions. * The builtin classes such as Eq, Ord, and Enum. Order your copy today and learn Haskell this weekend!

Book excerpt: In response to the most recent U.S. recession, Congress passed the Recovery Act (RA). To help states maintain their Medicaid programs and provide states with fiscal relief, the RA temporarily increased the fed. share of Medicaid funding for states. The fed. funding states receive for Medicaid is determined by a statutory formula (FMAP). The RA also required a study of options for providing a temporary increased FMAP in response to future recessions. This report reviewed how past recessions affected states¿ ability to fund Medicaid, examined the responsiveness of past increased FMAP assistance to state needs, and identified options for adjusting the increased FMAP formula for use during future recessions.
