Book excerpt: Forging a Special Operations Force: The U.S. Army Rangers details the origins and development, combat philosophy, and key engagements of America's elite fighting force. Structured topically, the book gives a chronological review of the history of the Ranger from the 17th century to the present day, with special attention paid to the establishment of the 1st Ranger Battalion in the post-Vietnam era—the origins of the elite fighting force that exists today. Authored by a lifetime soldier who served in combat with the 75th Ranger Regiment, this book is replete with information garnered from dozens of interviews with the individuals who created the initial Ranger Force. By integrating the words and firsthand accounts of these founding fathers, the work offers insights unavailable elsewhere. Additionally, the author delves into the unique psyche of the soldiers who volunteer for—and are accepted into the ranks of—the ‘Rangers’.

Book Rangers

Download or read book Rangers written by Michael Julius King and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Leavenworth Paper is a critical reconstruction of World War II Ranger operations conducted at or near Djebel el Ank, Tunisia; Porto Empedocle, Sicily; Cisterna, Italy; Zerf, Germany; and Cabanatuan in the Philippines. It is not intended to be a comprehensive account of World War II Ranger operations, for such a study would have to include numerous minor actions that are too poorly documented to be studied to advantage. It is, however, representative for it examines several types of operations conducted against the troops of three enemy nations in a variety of physical and tactical environments. As such, it draws a wide range of lessons useful to combat leaders who may have to conduct such operations or be on guard against them in the future. Many factors determined the outcomes of the operations featured in this Leavenworth Paper, and of these there are four that are important enough to merit special emphasis. These are surprise, the quality of opposing forces, the success of friendly forces with which the Rangers were cooperating, and popular support.

This book traces the Rangers from the time of Robert Rogers during the French-Indian War of the 18th century to the most recent combat operations in Iraq. With a focus on today's Army Rangers, who combine the rugged individualism of American frontiersmen with the finely honed ability to operate as a close-knit team, wreaking havoc behind enemy lines, this fascinating volume incorporates many first-hand accounts of dramatic Ranger actions by the combatants themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rangers of the 75th Regiment The 75th Ranger Regiment is a deadly, nimble, and adaptable force capable of carrying out a wide range of difficult collaborative special operations missions. The Army's main direct-action raid unit today is the Ranger regiment. Each of the four geographically distributed Ranger battalions is constantly battle ready, psychologically and physically robust, and ready to confront the enemies of our nation. Their skills include executing airborne and air assault operations, capturing or killing adversaries, taking vital territory such as airfields, damaging critical infrastructure, and capturing or killing enemies. Rangers may execute squad to regimental-size operations and have the resources to maintain remarkable proficiency, experience, and readiness. The regiment is still an all-volunteer unit that goes through a rigorous screening and selection procedure before receiving combat-focused training. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a proud unit and a team of teams dedicated to serving the country. Their addresses are as follows: Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. Fort Lewis, Washington, is home to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Fort Benning, Georgia, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Battalion of Regimental Special Troops, Fort Benning, Ga. Further information may be found on the website of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Rangers Take the Lead! The 75th Ranger Regiment embraces the "Big five mentality" for the success of the individual Ranger and the Ranger mission: marksmanship, physical training, medical training, small-unit tactics, and mobility. RASP 1 is an eight-week training that prepares soldiers from private to sergeant in the fundamental abilities and tactics necessary to function in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Rangers who complete this course will have the necessary abilities, training, and confidence to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Officers, warrant officers, and senior non-commissioned officers (staff sergeant to command sergeant major) are required to attend RASP 2, a three-week school aimed at identifying the finest leadership from throughout the Army. This training analyzes the fitness of mid- and senior-level commanders for assignment to the regiment and teaches them the Ranger Regiment's operational procedures and standards. This course teaches the distinctive tactics, equipment, and missions that distinguish the Regiment. Applicants who successfully complete this training will be assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment.
