Download or read book Home at last written by Bette Anunson Anderson and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are, indeed, lucky to inhabit the world with Bette and her team. Her impact is inspiring, and her resolve even more so because, like so many true heroes, again and again, she willingly stepped outside of her life and into the lives of others when it was needed the most; and while she makes it sound easy, make no mistake, to feel, give, and love as fully as Bette has involves extreme sacrifice. Thank you, Bette. Betsy Banks Saul CEO Heal House Call Veterinarian Founder Petfinder.com and 911FosterPets.com "The stories Bette Anderson shares in –Home At Last– True Lost Dog Stories are heart-warming and inspiring. Bette and her team combined remarkable instincts, sleuthing skills, tenacity, and compassion to make many families whole again. While others may have written off these pleas for help saying, ‘It's just a dog,' Bette knew these were lost family members and took up each challenge as a personal crusade. Others would have been defeated by extreme weather conditions and downright bad odds but not this team! There are angels among us, and Bette and her team are chief amongst them. Having been in animal welfare work, I've seen and lived stories that could harden the softest of souls. Even so, Bette's book elicited more tears than this old dog should have left to shed. I know –Home At Last–True Lost Dog Stories will inspire others to get more involved in helping their neighbors—two and four-legged alike." Jim Tedford, CAWA President and CEO Society of Animal Welfare Administrators (SAWA) "I found myself pulled into the reality of each dog's story in such a way that it seemed I was right there with the people who made a difference. Feeling the angst of each situation, followed by an uplifting resolution was heartwarming. Indeed, there are real guardian angels amongst us, helping lost pets. It is rare to discover individuals as dedicated as those portrayed in this book." Darlene Larson ASPCA Senior Director, Community Initiatives (Retired)
Download or read book Distant Publics written by Jennifer Rice and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2012-08-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban sprawl is omnipresent in America and has left many citizens questioning their ability to stop it. In Distant Publics, Jenny Rice examines patterns of public discourse that have evolved in response to development in urban and suburban environments. Centering her study on Austin, Texas, Rice finds a city that has simultaneously celebrated and despised development. Rice outlines three distinct ways that the rhetoric of publics counteracts development: through injury claims, memory claims, and equivalence claims. In injury claims, rhetors frame themselves as victims in a dispute. Memory claims allow rhetors to anchor themselves to an older, deliberative space, rather than to a newly evolving one. Equivalence claims see the benefits on both sides of an issue, and here rhetors effectively become nonactors. Rice provides case studies of development disputes that place the reader in the middle of real-life controversies and evidence her theories of claims-based public rhetorics. She finds that these methods comprise the most common (though not exclusive) vernacular surrounding development and shows how each is often counterproductive to its own goals. Rice further demonstrates that these claims create a particular role or public subjectivity grounded in one's own feelings, which serves to distance publics from each other and the issues at hand. Rice argues that rhetoricians have a duty to transform current patterns of public development discourse so that all individuals may engage in matters of crisis. She articulates its sustainability as both a goal and future disciplinary challenge of rhetorical studies and offers tools and methodologies toward that end.

The brutal slaying of Boulder’s controversial D.A. strikes deep in the heart of everything clinical psychologist Alan Gregory holds dear: After all, Alan’s wife, Lauren, worked for the dead man. When a new patient walks into Alan’s office—a terrified mother with an explosive secret—he finds himself edging even closer to the darkness. Soon her privileged exchanges convince Alan that a crime is about to be committed. And when he uncovers a shocking link to the D.A.’s slaying, Alan is suddenly locked in the ethical dilemma of his career, thrust into a desperate manhunt for a killer whose identity no one could have guessed. As the minutes tick down, Warning Signs explodes into a gripping story of crime and punishment, tragedy and retribution—and of human beings caught in the shattering cross fire of forces beyond their control...forces sometimes within themselves.

Download or read book Professor Molly s Big Book of Murder Part Two written by Frankie Bow and published by Hawaiian Heritage Press. This book was released on 2023-05-27 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring the second six Professor Molly mysteries and an exclusive bonus short story with reporter Pat Flanagan and Harriet Holmes! The Blessed Event: "Davison Gonsalves was a nightmare student--an obnoxious, entitled, cheating suckup. In a twist of fate that might seem hilarious if it happened to someone else, he was now my stepson." Mother's Day: Mahina State University's powerful fundraising office tasks Professor Molly with a special assignment: To serve as the personal tutierge (that's tutor-concierge) to Jeremy Brigham, whose mother happens to be fabulously wealthy and gravely ill. Molly is not thrilled at having to babysit a spoiled rich kid. Especially not while she's battling morning sickness, a meddling mom, and (as always) the Student Retention Office. But once inside the historic Brigham House, Molly realizes something is very wrong. And she has to decide whether to mind her own business and keep her job, or risk everything to prevent a murder. The Nakamura Letters: Professor Emma Nakamura doesn't believe in ghosts. So it doesn't bother her (much) when she learns of a long-ago suicide in her remote upcountry rental house. She's sure there's a logical explanation for the disappearing items and the strange sounds in the night. Fortunately (?), Emma's best friend Molly has news shocking enough to take Emma's mind off the hauntings. Now Emma and Molly have to rely on their strong reasoning skills and a weak internet connection to figure out how a body ended up in Molly's backyard. The Nakamura Letters is an island-style take on the Golden Age mysteries of Mary Roberts Rinehart and Agatha Christie. The Perfect Body: When Professor Molly attends Mahina State University's exclusive donor dinner, she doesn't expect to share a table with the insufferable Stephen Park. Turns out it's one thing to invite your toxic ex-boyfriend to drop dead...it's quite another when he takes you up on it. The Fever Cabinet: Through no fault of her own, Professor Molly just got promoted to department chair. The Student Retention Office has her buried in paperwork. The college has just relocated to a former asylum, which is undergoing noisy renovations. Molly's dean has directed her to mentor the department's new star, the prickly Fiona Spencer, and to do whatever it takes to keep Fiona happy. At least nothing else can go wrong. And then Fiona finds a body in her office. The Influencer: There's no such thing as bad publicity. Until it happens to you. Professor Molly's new renter is a social media star seeking privacy in remote Mahina, Hawaii. The arrangement seems to be working out--until the celebrity influencer vanishes. Molly and her best friend Emma Nakamura call in the Mahina PD and try to stay out of the way. But the unthinkable happens—the saturnine Detective Medeiros actually asks for Molly and Emma's help. As they confront nosy neighbors, fanatical followers, and the missing woman's has-been husband, Molly and Emma find themselves at the center of the story. And when fame creates its own reality, that's a dangerous place to be. EXCLUSVE BONUS CONTENT: Death at the Effigy It's 1984. Young Pat Flanagan gets his first reporting job at San Diego's second-coolest 'zine, Voltaire's Quill. But when Pat covers the opening night of a trendy new club, he witnesses a freak "accident" and has to choose: keep his eccentric editor Harriet and her advertisers happy, or find out the truth?

As the children fall in lust and love, grapple with angst and battle the tides of New South politics, Coster’s writing shines"—New York Times Book Review From the author of Halsey Street, a sweeping novel of legacy, identity, the American family—and the ways that race affects even our most intimate relationships. A community in the Piedmont of North Carolina rises in outrage as a county initiative draws students from the largely Black east side of town into predominantly white high schools on the west. For two students, Gee and Noelle, the integration sets off a chain of events that will tie their two families together in unexpected ways over the next twenty years. On one side of the integration debate is Jade, Gee's steely, ambitious mother. In the aftermath of a harrowing loss, she is determined to give her son the tools he'll need to survive in America as a sensitive, anxious, young Black man. On the other side is Noelle's headstrong mother, Lacey May, a white woman who refuses to see her half-Latina daughters as anything but white. She strives to protect them as she couldn't protect herself from the influence of their charming but unreliable father, Robbie. When Gee and Noelle join the school play meant to bridge the divide between new and old students, their paths collide, and their two seemingly disconnected families begin to form deeply knotted, messy ties that will shape the trajectory of their adult lives. And their mothers—each determined to see her child inherit a better life—will make choices that will haunt them for decades to come. As love is built and lost, and the past never too far behind, What's Mine and Yours is an expansive, vibrant tapestry that moves between the years, from the foothills of North Carolina, to Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Paris. It explores the unique organism that is every family: what breaks them apart and how they come back together.
