Book Fly Over Down Under Australian Adventures by Single Engine Airplane

Download or read book Fly Over Down Under Australian Adventures by Single Engine Airplane written by Michelee Morgan Cabot and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green ants that defend their tree by attacking anyone who touches it…a mysterious lava-tube cave with hikers' flashlights floating like fireflies down into its blackness...fruit bats noisily lobbing mangos onto your cabin's tin roof. The beauties -- and dangers -- of the crocodile-infested Kakadu National Park. A crash landing at a remote island airstrip…a rugby match in Northern Territory (and why Aussie girls never “root” for their teams). In this colorful and remarkable book, written by a colorful and remarkable woman pilot, you'll find the most enjoyable way to discover Australia -- by flying a light airplane to its places of greatest interest while watching the exotic landscape unroll beneath you. Vistas of giant paisley patterned earth, caused by underlying salt strata. Stunning views of red landscapes, uplifted and contorted during the earth's primordial boil. The enormously long white beaches of Western Australia, lonesome and edged by brilliant aquas. And the Indian Ocean to the south, marked by hundreds of miles of cliffs. Whales breed there…You could get lucky. You don't have to be a pilot to enjoy this book. The author wrote it also for non-flyers, in non-technical terms, to let you see amazing things that pilots experience from their very special perspective. You'll want to read it, re-read it, and share it with your friends.

Alone in the cockpit of a tiny two-seat aircraft, the author gazed down upon both the raw beauty of Australia's most remote regions and the spectacular harbours and city skylines. From the first stirring to fly around the island continent, to the moment when the propeller fell silent for the last time, the effort, experience and emotion of this very special flight is revealed. Nearly 200 images bring this story to life, while well chosen words paint an equally vivid canvas. Beyond the 7,500 miles that passed beneath his wings, the author tells a tale of remote communities, forgotten heroes and family bonds that are stronger than life and death. Now in 'Solo Flight' he shares every heartbeat of this magnificent adventure.

Book Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force

Download or read book Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force written by Air Force History Branch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force tells the story of the RAAF’s first one hundred years by describing the acquisition, operation, and service record of the multitude of aircraft types flown by the RAAF. The 176 aircraft types include the flimsy wood and canvas aircraft typical of World War I, through the technological advances during and after World War II, to modern fifth-generation, complex aircraft like the F-35 Lightning II. Even before its formation Sir Richard Williams, the Father of the RAAF, had decided to employ an alpha-numeric numbering system to identify and account for each aircraft in service. This system started with A1, A2, A3 etc as each type of aircraft came into service. Each individual aircraft within each series was identified as A1-1, A1-2 and so on and the aircraft serial became known colloquially as the ‘A-number’. With some exceptions over the century since the A-number system started, aircraft entered RAAF service in broadly the sequence of the A-numbers, and so this book is intended to assist in charting the 100-year history of the RAAF by listing aircraft operated in A-number sequence, rather than by listing them by role (such as Fighter, Bomber, Maritime, Trainer, Transport etc) or alphabetically by name or by manufacturer. The inclusion of a comprehensive Index and the Quick Reference Guide to aircraft by role is intended to facilitate the location of the entry for any specific type of aircraft for those who may not already know its A-number. Aircraft of The Royal Australian Air Force is a must have for all those who have served in the RAAF, those with a passion for military aviation and aircraft in general, and the broader members of the public wishing to gain an appreciation of the Royal Australian Air Force in its centenary year.

Book Self flying the Australian Outback

Download or read book Self flying the Australian Outback written by Barbara L. Feader and published by . This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, Feader talks about the amazing experience of flying over vast portions of Australia with only a few navigational aids and a single engine for fifteen days. During the plane safari, she flew with five other planes over the eastern half of Australia from Melbourne (Victoria), going west across to Ayers Rock (Northern Australia), northeast to the Gulf of Carpenteria (Queensland), east to Cairns on the Pacific Coast, then south towards the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea. The author and her companions later re-entered the mainland at Mackay where they flew southeast across New South Wales and by the time they arrived at Melbourne, their safari ended with a grand total distance of almost four thousand miles. Along the way, the author reveals interesting moments, such as what it was like landing on islands down the Great Barrier Reef, encountering vast wilderness in the Australian Outback, reaching landmarks in central Australia that most people never get the chance to visit, and the experience of landing at sheep stations where the Royal Flying Doctors land to take care of people who were sick and wounded in remote areas"--Publisher.

Book excerpt: Kerry McCauley has the job most pilots only dream of; delivering small used aircraft to locations around the world. In his 30 years an international ferry pilot, Kerry has delivered almost every kind of airplane you can name to almost every location you can think of. In his long career Kerry battled fuel system malfunctions over the Atlantic, a total electrical failure at night over the Sahara, getting lost over Africa and being struck by lightning off the coast of Portugal. Kerry's almost insatiable, reckless quest for danger and adventure also led to putting international smuggler and bank robber on his resume. Kerry found the answer to the question "what could possibly go wrong?" time and time again. But his skill, ingenuity and luck were what allowed him to survive the countless mishaps, catastrophes and close calls including a nearly fatal plane crash. While "Ferry Pilot" is an account of one man's crazy thirst for thrills and adventure, his coming to grips with the dangerous nature of his career and just how much he wants to test the depth of his luck bag. It's also a portrait of the perseverance and bravery of a devoted family man who lost many close friends and his first wife to the dangerous skies.

Book Flight to Fame

Download or read book Flight to Fame written by Ross Smith and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight to Fame, a classic adventure story, tells the hair-raising tale of the world-first flight from England to Australia, in the words of the pilot, (Sir) Ross Smith. In March 1919, Australia's prime minister announced a prize of £10,000 for the first successful flight from Great Britain to Australia in under 30 days. Late that same year, the victorious pilots, Ross and Keith Smith, landed in Darwin to international acclaim. The New York Times gushed: 'Captain Ross Smith has done a wonderful thing for the prestige of the British Empire. He must be hailed as the foremost living aviator.' Their achievement was the forerunner to the age of international air travel. During the race, Ross and his brother Keith (his co-pilot and navigator) wrote in their diaries daily, recording the journey of their four-man crew in their Vickers Vimy G-EAOU twin-engine plane, its open cockpit exposing them to snow, sleet, hail and unbearable heat. Originally published as 14,000 Miles Through the Air (1922), Ross Smith's book recounts their danger-ridden, record-breaking journey - a mere 16 years after the Wright brothers first defied gravity for just a few seconds. This richly illustrated edition, published to coincide with the flight's centenary, is introduced and edited by historian Peter Monteath.
