Book To Fly and Fight

Download or read book To Fly and Fight written by Clarence E. "Bud" Anderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bud Anderson is a flyers flyer. The Californians enduring love of flying began in the 1920s with the planes that flew over his fathers farm. In January 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. Later after he received his wings and flew P-39s, he was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the new 357th Fighter Group. Equipped with the new and deadly P-51 Mustang, the group shot down five enemy aircraft for each one it lost while escorting bombers to targets deep inside Germany. But the price was high. Half of its pilots were killed or imprisoned, including some of Buds closest friends. In February 1944, Bud Anderson, entered the uncertain, exhilarating, and deadly world of aerial combat. He flew two tours of combat against the Luftwaffe in less than a year. In battles sometimes involving hundreds of airplanes, he ranked among the groups leading aces with 16 aerial victories. He flew 116 missions in his old crow without ever being hit by enemy aircraft or turning back for any reason, despite one life or death confrontation after another. His friend Chuck Yeager, who flew with Anderson in the 357th, says, In an airplane, the guy was a mongoosethe best fighter pilot I ever saw. Buds years as a test pilot were at least as risky. In one bizarre experiment, he repeatedly linked up in midair with a B-29 bomber, wingtip to wingtip. In other tests, he flew a jet fighter that was launched and retrieved from a giant B-36 bomber. As in combat, he lost many friends flying tests such as these. Bud commanded a squadron of F-86 jet fighters in postwar Korea, and a wing of F-105s on Okinawa during the mid-1960s. In 1970 at age 48, he flew combat strikes as a wing commander against communist supply lines. To Fly and Fight is about flying, plain and simple: the joys and dangers and the very special skills it demands. Touching, thoughtful, and dead honest, it is the story of a boy who grew up living his dream.

Book Vietnam and Back

Download or read book Vietnam and Back written by Phil Hitchcock and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Vietnam and Back," is the first hand account of a helicopter gunship pilot who served in Vietnam during 1969. It is an accurate and realistic portrayal of one average guy engaged in helicopter warfare in Vietnam. Flying helicopters can be challenging, and flying in a combat zone can be quite harrowing. The book is full of stories of being shot at, hit by enemy gunfire, and of mechanical operational failures, that created many near miss events. His experiences in Vietnam left the author with some impressions and feelings regarding Vietnam and war in general, and will leave the reader with some issues to think about.

Book Disconnected

  • Author : William Wresch
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780813523705
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Disconnected written by William Wresch and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Information Age, information is power. Who produces all that information, how does it move around, who uses it, to what ends, and under what constraints? Who gets that power? And what happens to the people who have no access to it? Disconnected begins with a striking vignette of two men: One is the thriving manager of a company selling personal computers and computer services. The other is just one among thousands of starving laborers. He has no way to find the information that might help him find a job, he cannot afford newspapers, rarely sees television, cannot understand the dialect of local radio broadcasts, will probably never touch a computer. These two men happen to live in Windhoek, Namibia, but this is not a story about Africa--it is a story that could be repeated almost anywhere in the world, even next door. With vivid anecdotes and data, William Wresch contrasts the opportunities of the information-rich with the limited prospects of the information-poor. Surveying the range of information--personal, public, organizational, commercial---that has become the currency of exchange in today's world, he shows how each represents a form of power. He analyzes the barriers that keep people information-poor: geography, tyranny, illiteracy, psychological blinders, "noise," crime. Technology alone, he demonstrates, is not the answer. Even the technology-rich do not always get access to important information--or recognize its value. Wresch spells out the grim consequences of information inequity for individuals and society. Yet he ends with reasons for optimism and stories of people who are working to pull down the impediments to the flow of information.

Download or read book Lords of Darkness written by Col Billy R. Wood Us Army (Retired) and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to 1979, you probably hadn't heard of counterterrorism or Special Operations. Even so, special warriors have been around since Moses sent Joshua to spy out the land of Canaan. In 1986, Colonel Billy R. Wood served as the operations officer of the newly organized 45th Aviation Battalion (Special Operations). This unit was highly classified. The special operations training and missions carried out by the team were conducted in secret, and members couldn't even tell their wives and families where they were going. These soldiers were called the Lords of Darkness. Prior to its formation, much was written about the failed hostage rescue mission in Iran. The Pentagon leadership implied, "Whatever the costs, whatever we do, we can never have another Desert One." Secret exercises were conducted with modified aircraft and soon-to-be-skilled night flyers of Task Force 160, today known as "Night Stalkers." What you didn't read about was the "other" US Army Special Operations Aviation Battalion-an Army National Guard unit. Highly classified and therefore less known, it was a "mirror image" special aviation unit. You didn't realize they existed because you weren't supposed to know. These teachers, businessmen, lawyers, salesman, citizen soldiers, and traditional guardsmen were called the Lords of Darkness of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. The night belonged to them-and their hearts belonged to aviation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retired CIA Officer Woody Travis is living an idyllic life on his fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico. His CIA mentor recruits him to lead a team of former CIA assassins to plan and execute the most lethal black operation in history on September 11, 2001. Woody's one-time colleagues in the CIA Clandestine Service, Lauren Hunter, and Sam Saunders, join him and help steer the mission towards a dramatic and horrific conclusion. Kirk Dolan, Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI's New York Anti-Terrorism Office, is on the trail of the mercenaries. Dolan suspects Travis and his team are working with international terrorists and planning an attack on US soil. Dolan is a hard-nosed investigator determined to stop them at all costs. Inspired by actual events, this fast-paced suspense thriller is the first book in the Evocatus Series and blurs the line between duty and morals, good and evil, and state-sanctioned killing and cold-blooded murder. This shocking "how-done-it" pulls back the veil of secrecy surrounding intelligence agency operations and gives the reader insight into the murky world of espionage. "Great read! Just finished this book. It was very thought-provoking. For those of you who like a good conspiracy theory, this one is for you. Great characters and story. Highly recommend. Can't wait for the movie." - B. Mitchell "An incredible read! If you're looking for a suspense thrill ride, then this book is for you!" - S. Renwick

Book excerpt: The Red Knight is the product of 25 years of meticulous research. It is, arguably, the most comprehensive account ever written about the Canadian Air Force’s legendary solo jet-aerobatics performer. An important part of Canadian aviation history, the Red Knight is third in longevity and total number of performances among RCAF display teams. In recognition of the program’s importance, Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame honoured the Red Knight with its Belt of Orion Award for Excellence in 2020 and the Royal Canadian Mint issued a commemorative coin in 2022. The Red Knight chronicles the history of the program, from its origins in 1957 to its cancellation in 1970. Everyone who has enjoyed watching the precision, grace and beauty of aerobatic flight will enjoy this insight into the “behind the scenes” aspect of aerial displays. A fine addition to any aviation reference library, The Red Knight will be of particular interest to anyone who remembers the program or saw a performance of this uniquely Canadian display. Printed in colour, The Red Knight - Second Edition is illustrated with many rare photographs never published before. The book is further enhanced by specially commissioned works of art from noted Canadian Aviation Artist, Don Connolly. Details of the various Red Knight paint schemes are provided through aircraft profiles, also specifically created for this publication. Together, this unique pictorial collection vividly portrays the legacy of the Red Knight. https://www.facebook.com/rcafredknight www.johncharlescorrigan.com "It's hard to imagine a more comprehensive look at the Red Knight program--and at aerobatics in general." — Kirkus Reviews
