Work is reported, which was sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft from 1993 to 1995. Scientists from numerical mathematics, fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and turbomachinery present their work on flow simulation with massively parallel systems, on the direct and large-eddy simulation of turbulence, and on mathematical foundations, general solution techniques and applications. Results are reported from benchmark computations of laminar flow around a cylinder, in which seventeen groups participated.

Book Physics of Gas Liquid Flows

Download or read book Physics of Gas Liquid Flows written by Thomas J. Hanratty and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting tools for understanding the behaviour of gas-liquid flows based on the ways large scale behaviour relates to small scale interactions, this text is ideal for engineers seeking to enhance the safety and efficiency of natural gas pipelines, water-cooled nuclear reactors, absorbers, distillation columns and gas lift pumps. The review of advanced concepts in fluid mechanics enables both graduate students and practising engineers to tackle the scientific literature and engage in advanced research. It focuses on gas-liquid flow in pipes as a simple system with meaningful experimental data. This unified theory develops design equations for predicting drop size, frictional pressure losses and slug frequency, which can be used to determine flow regimes, the effects of pipe diameter, liquid viscosity and gas density. It describes the effect of wavy boundaries and temporal oscillations on turbulent flows, and explains transition between phases, which is key to understanding the behaviour of gas-liquid flows.

Book Pressure Variation Over a Solid Wavy Surface

Download or read book Pressure Variation Over a Solid Wavy Surface written by David James Courtemanche and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface pressure variations for turbulent flow over solid wavy surfaces with a wavelength of 2 inches were studied. Measurements were made over waves of two amplitudes, 0.0123 inches and 0.03125 inches. The water flow rate and viscosity were varied so that a range of dimensionless wave numbers (scaled with the friction velocity and the kinematic viscosity) of alpha (+) = 0.0011 to 0.020 were covered. Pressure profiles are described using a three harmonic fit. A linear response, for which only a single harmonic is needed, was observed for all alpha (+) for the small amplitude wave and for small alpha (+) for the large amplitude wave. Of particular interest is the large phase shift of the pressure profile observed with increasing alpha (+). These results are used to test the quasi-laminar model for flow over wavy surfaces, widely used to predict wave generation and drag on small amplitude waves. Keywords: Surface pressure; Turbulence; Wavy surfaces. (jhd).

Book Convective Flow and Heat Transfer from Wavy Surfaces

Download or read book Convective Flow and Heat Transfer from Wavy Surfaces written by Aroon Shenoy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convective Flow and Heat Transfer from Wavy Surfaces: Viscous Fluids, Porous Media, and Nanofluids addresses the wavy irregular surfaces in heat transfer devices. Fluid flow and heat transfer studies from wavy surfaces have received attention, since they add complexity and require special mathematical techniques. This book considers the flow and heat transfer characteristics from wavy surfaces, providing an understanding of convective behavioral changes.

Book Boundary Layer Flow over Elastic Surfaces

Download or read book Boundary Layer Flow over Elastic Surfaces written by Viktor V. Babenko and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2012-09-29 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While other methods of drag reduction are well-known in marine R&D and ship design environments worldwide, compliant coating drag reduction remains less well-known and poorly understood. This important book presents cutting-edge techniques and findings from research sources not generally accessible by Western researchers and engineers, aiding the application and further development of this potentially important technology. Beginning with an introduction to drag reduction that places the authors’ work on elastic surfaces and combined techniques in context, the book moves on to provide a comprehensive study of drag reduction through elastic coating with both flow and material properties considered. Coverage includes: Experimental findings around coherent vortical structures (CVS) in turbulent boundary layers and methods of controlling them Static and dynamic mechanical characteristics of elastic composite coatings, as well as new techniques and devices developed for their measurement Combined methods of flow control and drag reduction, including the effect of injection of polymer solutions, elastic coatings and generated longitudinal vortical structures on hydrodynamic resistance Intended as a reference for senior engineers and researchers concerned with the drag reduction and the dynamics of turbulent boundary layer flows, Boundary Layer Flow over Elastic Surfaces provides a unique source of information on compliant surface drag reduction and the experimental techniques around it that have shown measurable and repeatable improvements over recent years. This compilation of research findings and new techniques developed for measurement will aid R&D engineers, naval architects and senior designers in their quest to achieve drag reductions that will deliver significant efficiency savings. Unique source of information on compliant surface drag reduction—an important area of technology with practical application to ships—from otherwise inaccessible research studies Updates the knowledge-base on boundary layer flow and surface friction reduction, critical topics in the global quest for increased ship efficiency and fuel economy Reveals new techniques and devices developed for measurement and provides a comprehensive study of drag reduction through elastic coating with both flow and material properties covered

Book Direct and Large Eddy Simulation I

Download or read book Direct and Large Eddy Simulation I written by Peter R. Voke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a truism that turbulence is an unsolved problem, whether in scientific, engin eering or geophysical terms. It is strange that this remains largely the case even though we now know how to solve directly, with the help of sufficiently large and powerful computers, accurate approximations to the equations that govern tur bulent flows. The problem lies not with our numerical approximations but with the size of the computational task and the complexity of the solutions we gen erate, which match the complexity of real turbulence precisely in so far as the computations mimic the real flows. The fact that we can now solve some turbu lence in this limited sense is nevertheless an enormous step towards the goal of full understanding. Direct and large-eddy simulations are these numerical solutions of turbulence. They reproduce with remarkable fidelity the statistical, structural and dynamical properties of physical turbulent and transitional flows, though since the simula tions are necessarily time-dependent and three-dimensional they demand the most advanced computer resources at our disposal. The numerical techniques vary from accurate spectral methods and high-order finite differences to simple finite-volume algorithms derived on the principle of embedding fundamental conservation prop erties in the numerical operations. Genuine direct simulations resolve all the fluid motions fully, and require the highest practical accuracy in their numerical and temporal discretisation. Such simulations have the virtue of great fidelity when carried out carefully, and repre sent a most powerful tool for investigating the processes of transition to turbulence.
