Download or read book Flow Over a Moving Boundary in Relation to Wind generated Waves written by Konstantin Zagustin and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the mechanisms for transfer of energy from the wind to wind-generated water waves are not fully known or understood, the present work is focused on a theoretical and experimental examination of the boundary conditions at the air-water interface. Two limiting conditions of wave formation are investigated. First, the case of small amplitude waves is considered. Theories of linear type are available and the work of Miles, Benjamin and Lighthill is reviewed. Experiments were performed on a laboratory model in which a belt driven at a constant speed and following the shape of the wave reproduced the moving boundary conditions at the surface of the wave. Water was used as a working fluid. Within the limitations of experimental accuracy the data seem to verify Miles' mechanism of energy transfer from wind to wave for the growth of already-formed small amplitude waves. Second, the case of a sharp crested limiting wave is considered. The flow is assumed to separate at one crest of the wave and close at the other, forming a closed separated region, and a mathematical model, in which the air flow is irrotational outside the separated region and rotational with a continuous distribution of vorticity inside that region, in constructed. Flow visualization experiments, in which the velocity distribution on the wave surface was approximately reproduced, confirmed the crest-to-crest hypothesis and the main flow characteristics obtained from the mathematical model. Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Structure of a Turbulent Wind Over Water Waves written by Susumu Karaki and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation presents experimental results from a study of the structure of a turbulent boundary layer developed by air flow over water waves in a lab wind-wave channel. It was demonstrated that the sheared flow region is two-layered, similar to rough wall boundary layers. The inner layer, adjacent to the wall, is describable by the 'law of the wall' and the outer flow by the 'defect law.' The data were taken in two-dimensional flow with small favorable pressure gradients. The first part of the two-part investigation involved air flow over an initially still water surface on which waves developed in response to wind excitation. In the second part, air was passed over water waves of a single frequency and varied amplitude. The results indicated that within the range of this study the water surface can be classed as aerodynamically rough at wind speeds greater than 12 fps and the flow structure of the boundary layer corresponds to that over a rough wall. The velocity decrement due to surface roughness is shown to be a function of the local root-mean-square wave height. The effect of wave-induced fluctuations in the air is limited to a very close neighborhood of the wavy surface. For the specific combination of wind and wave speeds of this study it was found that while the amplitudes of the horizontal components of the fluctuation decreased with increasing elevation, the vertical component increased. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980's a wealth of information was reported from field and laboratory experiments in order to validate andlor modify various aspects of the surface layer Monin-Obukhov (M-O) similarity theory for use over the sea, and to introduce and test new concepts related to high resolution flux magnitudes and variabilities. For example, data from various field experiments conducted on the North Sea, Lake Ontario, and the Atlantic experiments, among others, yielded information on the dependence of the flux coefficients on wave state. In all field projects, the usual criteria for satisfying M-O similarity were applied. The assumptions of stationarity and homogeneity was assumed to be relevant over both small and large scales. In addition, the properties of the outer layer were assumed to be "correlated" with properties of the surface layer. These assumptions generally required that data were averaged for spatial footprints representing scales greater than 25 km (or typically 30 minutes or longer for typical windspeeds). While more and more data became available over the years, and the technology applied was more reliable, robust, and durable, the flux coefficients and other turbulent parameters still exhibited significant unexplained scatter. Since the scatter did not show sufficient reduction over the years to meet customer needs, in spite of improved technology and heavy financial investments, one could only conclude that perhaps the use of similarity theory contained too many simplifications when applied to environments which were more complicated than previously thought.
Download or read book Waves in the Ocean written by P.H. LeBlond and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book which will be welcomed not only by researchers and engineers, but also by teachers and students, as it contains the only comprehensive review of the dynamics of ocean waves. Existing books are now either out of date or restricted to specialized aspects of the subject, whereas this book covers all types of ocean waves, ranging from capillary to planetary waves. Because of its completeness of coverage, its use of elementary mathematics and the provision of numerous problems and exercises, the book will be an indispensable text for everyone. It is completed by a very lengthy bibliography which includes many references to the Russian literature.
