Book Flow Field Visualization in the Wake of a Ribbon Parachute

Download or read book Flow Field Visualization in the Wake of a Ribbon Parachute written by William L. Garrard and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the flow field in the wake of a flexible ribbon parachute model. A nylon ribbon parachute model with a geometric porosity of 20 percent was mounted in an open section of a horizontal return wind tunnel at an angle of attack of approximately zero degrees. To define the flow field, tufts were introduced into the wake of the parachute by means of a steel rod fastened to a sting [sic] that ran down the centerline of the parachute. Two photographs were taken simultaneously to record the pattern of the flow field at that given instant of time. These photographs could then be used in conjunction with high-speed movies already produced to determine the direction of the flow in the wake of the parachute. The results of this study seem to indicate that the photographs taken can help aid in determining the flow direction.

Book Flow Visualization and Mean Pressure and Velocity Measurements Behind the Grid Models

Download or read book Flow Visualization and Mean Pressure and Velocity Measurements Behind the Grid Models written by Hyun-Jin Kim and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow field past a row of closely spaced flat plates simulating the segment of the ribbon parachute was investigated experimentally both in air and water. Flow visualizations and surface pressure measurements were conducted to study the effect of the spacing ratio and the Reynolds number. Irregular and unstable flow patterns at high solidity configurations were documented in detail. Sensitivity of the flow pattern to the external disturbance was also studied. In addition, mean and fluctuating velocity profile measurements was [sic] conducted in the wake of a flat grid model. The results of the curved grid model indicated a stabilizing effect of the grid curvature.

Book Visualization of the Flow Field about Parachute Canopy Models and Approximation of Canopy Pressure Distributions

Download or read book Visualization of the Flow Field about Parachute Canopy Models and Approximation of Canopy Pressure Distributions written by Charles A. Babish (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the flow field about rigid two-dimensional models of parachute canopies was conducted. Models representing the inflated profile shapes of the drag-producing surface of nine parachute canopy types were tested in the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Smoke Tunnel Test Facility. Angles of attack varied from 0 to 30 degrees and photographs of the models and attendant smoke stream patterns were obtained for each test condition.

Book Ribbon Surface Pressure and Wake Velocity Data for the Experimental Validation of a Vortex based Parachute Inflation Code

Download or read book Ribbon Surface Pressure and Wake Velocity Data for the Experimental Validation of a Vortex based Parachute Inflation Code written by Donald Dean McBride and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment to measure surface pressure data on a series of three stainless steel simulated parachute ribbons was conducted. During the first phase of the test, unsteady pressure measurements were made on the windward and leeward sides of the ribbons to determine the statistical properties of the surface pressures. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements were simultaneously made to establish the velocity field in the wake of the ribbons and its correlation with the pressure measurements. In the second phase of the test, steady-state pressure measurements were made to establish the pressure distributions. In the third phase, the stainless steel ribbons were replaced with nylon ribbons and PIV measurements were made in the wake. A detailed error analysis indicates that the accuracy of the pressure measurements was very good. However, an anomaly in the flow field caused the wake behind the stainless steel ribbons to establish itself in a stable manner on one side of the model. This same stability was not present for the nylon ribbon model although an average wake velocity data indicated an apparent 2° upwash in the wind tunnel flow field. Since flow angularity upstream of the model was not measured, the use of the data for code validation is not recommended without a second experiment to establish that upstream boundary condition.

Book Investigation of the Flow Field During the Inflation of Clustered Parachutes

Download or read book Investigation of the Flow Field During the Inflation of Clustered Parachutes written by R. J. Niccum and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clustered parachutes during the period of inflation were simulated by elliptical cylinders in potential flow and so-called O'Hara shape parachutes in water flow and wind tunnel experiments. The results are presented in the form of streamline and pressure distribution plots around the respective bodies. Results show that when geometric symmetry is disturbed, the flow field becomes unsymmetrical and strong attractive or repulsive forces are developed. This allows a variety of inflation modes to occur and, hence, poor cluster opening performance.
