Book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures

Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.

Book A Critical Review of the Intrinsic Nature of Vortex Induced Vibrations

Download or read book A Critical Review of the Intrinsic Nature of Vortex Induced Vibrations written by Turgut Sarpkaya and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a concise and comprehensive review of the progress made during the past two decades on vortex induced vibration (VIV) of mostly circular cylindrical structures subjected to steady uniform flow. The critical elements of the evolution of the ideas, theoretical insights, experimental methods, and numerical models are traced systematically; the strengths and weaknesses of the current state of the understanding of the complex fluid/structure interaction are discussed in some detail. Finally, some suggestions are made for further research on VIV. The organization of the paper is given at the end of the next section.

Book A Discrete Vortex Analysis of Flow About Stationary and Transversely Oscillating Circular Cylinders

Download or read book A Discrete Vortex Analysis of Flow About Stationary and Transversely Oscillating Circular Cylinders written by Turgut Sarpkaya and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive numerical model has been developed to investigate the characteristics of flow about a circular cylinder undergoing synchronized transverse oscillations. The model is based on the rediscretization of the shear layers, wake-boundary-layer interaction, and the dissipation of vorticity. The forces acting on the cylinder, rate of vorticity flux, Strouhal number, cylinder response, oscillations of the stagnation and separation points, longitudinal and transverse spacing of the vortices, and the base pressure have been calculated and shown to be in conformity with those obtained experimentally. The model has been used to predict the characteristics of hydroelastic oscillations of a cylinder in the range of synchronization. The numerical experiments shed considerable light on the interaction between the fluid motion in the wake and the dynamics of the body. An extensive sensitivity analysis has been carried out to determine the stability of all the parameters and hence the stability of the numerical model itself. (Author).

Book Oscillating Flow About Circular Cylinders at Low Keulegan Carpenter Numbers

Download or read book Oscillating Flow About Circular Cylinders at Low Keulegan Carpenter Numbers written by Nathan Q. S. Yuen and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The in-line force and the resulting drag and inertia coefficients for smooth and rough circular cylinders immersed in a sinusoidally oscillating flow at low Keulegan-Carpenter numbers (K) have been determine experimentally and compared with those obtained theoretically by Stokes and Wang. In addition, flow visualization experiments were carried out with oscillating cylinders in a water table and the stability of the flow was investigated. The results have shown that for very low values of K, the flow about the cylinder is laminar, attached, and stable and the drag coefficient is nearly identical to that predicted theoretically. At a critical K, the flow becomes unstable to Taylor-Gortler vortices and the drag coefficient jumps to a higher value. Subsequently, the flow separates, becomes turbulent and results in a minimum drag coefficient. The subsequent increases in drag are attributed to vortex shedding. The inertia coefficient agrees with that obtained theoretically in the range where the flow is laminar.
