Book South Florida Ecosystem Restoration

Download or read book South Florida Ecosystem Restoration written by Barry Hill and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South FL (SF) Ecosystem Restoration Initiative is a long-term effort to restore the SF ecosystem, which includes the Everglades, that involves Fed., state, local, and tribal entities, as well as public and private interests. In response to the ecosystem's deterioration, Fed. agencies established the SF Ecosystem Restoration Task Force (SFERTF) in 1993 to coordinate ongoing Fed. restoration activities. This report determines (1) what the SFERTF did to identify and acquire lands needed to accomplish the goals of the initiative from 1996-1999 and (2) what the Dept. of the Interior did to help ensure that it maximized the acreage purchased-- with $200 million in grants.

Book Land of Sunshine State of Dreams

Download or read book Land of Sunshine State of Dreams written by Gary R Mormino and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida is a story of astonishing growth, a state swelling from 500,000 residents at the outset of the 20th century to some 16 million at the end. As recently as mid-century, on the eve of Pearl Harbor, Florida was the smallest state in the South. At the dawn of the millennium, it is the fourth largest in the country, a megastate that was among those introducing new words into the American vernacular: space coast, climate control, growth management, retirement community, theme park, edge cities, shopping mall, boomburbs, beach renourishment, Interstate, and Internet. Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams attempts to understand the firestorm of change that erupted into modern Florida by examining the great social, cultural, and economic forces driving its transformation. Gary Mormino ranges far and wide across the landscape and boundaries of a place that is at once America's southernmost state and the northernmost outpost of the Caribbean. From the capital, Tallahassee--a day's walk from the Georgia border--to Miami--a city distant but tantalizingly close to Cuba and Haiti--Mormino traces the themes of Florida's transformation: the echoes of old Dixie and a vanishing Florida; land booms and tourist empires; revolutions in agriculture, technology, and demographics; the seductions of the beach and the dynamics of a graying population; and the enduring but changing meanings of a dreamstate. Beneath the iconography of popular culture is revealed a complex and complicated social framework that reflects a dizzying passage from New Spain to Old South, New South to Sunbelt.

Download or read book Land Use Law in Florida written by W. Thomas Hawkins and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land Use Law in Florida presents an in-depth analysis of land use law common to many states across the United States, using Florida cases and statutes as examples. Florida case law is an important course of study for planners, as the state has its own legal framework that governs how people may use land, with regulation that has evolved to include state-directed urban and regional planning. The book addresses issues in a case format, including planning, land development regulation, property rights, real estate development and land use, transportation, and environmental regulation. Each chapter summarizes the rules that a reader should draw from the cases, making it useful as a reference for practicing professionals and as a teaching tool for planning students who do not have experience in reading law. This text is invaluable for attorneys; professional planners; environmental, property rights, and neighborhood activists; and local government employees who need to understand the rules that govern how property owners may use land in Florida and around the country.

Book The Florida Experience

Download or read book The Florida Experience written by Luther J. Carter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. The early 1970s will be recorded as the years when Florida's environmental crisis, or, more specifically, its land crisis, was proclaimed. Ever since intensive settlement of Florida began a century ago, people have been trying to remake, with increasingly troubling results, a delicate, low-lying peninsula wrought by natural forces over the geological ages. This study looks at the land crisis and the challenge it presents to the state and local governments.
