Book Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West

Download or read book Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West written by Mark C. McKinstry and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands and riparian areas between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada are incredibly diverse and valuable habitats. More than 80 percent of the wildlife species in this intermountain region depend on these wetlands—which account for less than 2 percent of the land area—for their survival. At the same time, the wetlands also serve the water needs of ranchers and farmers, recreationists, vacation communities, and cities. It is no exaggeration to call water the "liquid gold" of the West, and the burgeoning human demands on this scarce resource make it imperative to understand and properly manage the wetlands and riverine areas of the Intermountain West. This book offers land managers, biologists, and research scientists a state-of-the-art survey of the ecology and management practices of wetland and riparian areas in the Intermountain West. Twelve articles examine such diverse issues as laws and regulations affecting these habitats, the unique physiographic features of the region, the importance of wetlands and riparian areas to fish, wildlife, and livestock, the ecological function of these areas, their value to humans, and the methods to evaluate these habitats. The authors also address the human impacts on the land from urban and suburban development, mining, grazing, energy extraction, recreation, water diversions, and timber harvesting and suggest ways to mitigate such impacts.

Book Primates in Flooded Habitats

Download or read book Primates in Flooded Habitats written by Katarzyna Nowak and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly half the world's primate species use flooded habitats at one time or another, from swamp-going Congo gorillas and mangrove-eating proboscis monkeys, to uacaris in Amazonian riverside forests. This first-ever volume on the subject brings together experts from around the world in a ground breaking volume spanning fossil history, current biology and future research and conservation priorities. Flooded habitats are a vital part of tropical biology, both for the diversity of the species they house, and the complexity of their ecological interactions, but are often completely overlooked. This book will set the stage for a new wave of research on primates in these extraordinarily productive and highly threatened areas, and is ideal for researchers and graduate students in primatology, zoology, ecology, and conservation.

Book A Characterization and Multivariate Analysis of Floodplain Forest Communities in Mississippi River Navigation Pool 24

Download or read book A Characterization and Multivariate Analysis of Floodplain Forest Communities in Mississippi River Navigation Pool 24 written by David M. Israelitt and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flood control structures (e.g. levees) and navigation dams on the Upper Mississippi River modify river hydrology, potentially changing the comporition of floodplain forests. Channel constriction and impoundment contribute to differing reductions in water level variation within navigation pools. Historic hydrologic conditions (e.g. flood frequency, flood depth, etc.) on the Mississippi River differ greatly from current conditions, so older trees may no longer be growing in under the hydrolic conditions in which they established. This may potentially affect the success of seedlings from particular species to establish. This study is intended to (1) quantify differing patterns in forest community with Navigation Pool 24 and (2) describe the differential responses of species in relation to the varying hydrology. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers forest survey data, river level data, and elevation data were integrated using GIS. These data were analyzed by plot, in addition to being aggregated to stands defined by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers management unit, river mile, historic land class, and elevation, respectively. The results of this study indicate that forest communities and individual species respond differentially along the hydrologic gradient that exists within Navigation Pool 24.
