Book The Flirt s Tragedy

Download or read book The Flirt s Tragedy written by Richard A. Kaye and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2002-05-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the flirtation plots of novels by Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, and W. M. Thackeray, heroines learn sociability through competition with naughty coquette-doubles. In the writing of George Eliot and Thomas Hardy, flirting harbors potentially tragic consequences, a perilous game then adapted by male flirts in the novels of Oscar Wilde and Henry James. In revising Gustave Flaubert’s Sentimental Education in The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton critiques the nineteenth-century European novel as morbidly obsessed with deferred desires. Finally, in works by D. H. Lawrence and E. M. Forster, flirtation comes to reshape the modernist representation of homoerotic relations. In The Flirt’s Tragedy: Desire without End in Victorian and Edwardian Fiction, Richard Kaye makes a case for flirtation as a unique, neglected species of eros that finds its deepest, most elaborately sustained fulfillment in the nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century novel. The author examines flirtation in major British, French, and American texts to demonstrate how the changing aesthetic of such fiction fastened on flirtatious desire as a paramount subject for distinctly novelistic inquiry. The novel, he argues, accentuated questions of ambiguity and ambivalence on which an erotics of deliberate imprecision thrived. But the impact of flirtation was not only formal. Kaye views coquetry as an arena of freedom built on a dialectic of simultaneous consent and refusal, as well as an expression of "managed desire," a risky display of female power, and a cagey avenue for the expression of dissident sexualities. Through coquetry, novelists offered their response to important scientific and social changes and to the rise of the metropolis as a realm of increasingly transient amorous relations. Challenging current trends in gender, post-gender, and queer-theory criticism, and considering texts as diverse as Darwin’s The Descent of Man and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, Kaye insists that critical appraisals of Victorian and Edwardian fiction must move beyond existing paradigms defining considerations of flirtation in the novel. The Flirt’s Tragedy offers a lively, revisionary, often startling assessment of nineteenth-century fiction that will alter our understanding of the history of the novel.

Book Flirting with Danger

Download or read book Flirting with Danger written by Lynn Phillips and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How young women make sense of, resist, and negotiate conflicting messages on female sexuality and sexual agency In Flirting with Danger, Lynn M. Phillips explores how young women make sense of, resist, and negotiate conflicting cultural messages about sexual agency, responsibility, aggression, and desire. How do women develop their ideas about sex, love, and domination? Why do they express feminist views condemning male violence in the abstract, but often adamantly refuse to name their own violent and exploitive encounters as abuse, rape, or victimization? Based on in-depth individual and collective interviews with a racially and culturally diverse sample of college-aged women, Flirting with Danger sheds valuable light on the cultural lenses through which young women interpret their sexual encounters and their experiences of male aggression in heterosexual relationships. Phillips makes an important contribution to the fields of female and adolescent sexuality, feminist theory, and feminist method. The volume will also be of particular use to advocates seeking to design prevention and intervention programs which speak to the complex needs of women grappling with questions of sexuality and violence.

Hanna’s life should have been perfect. She had a boyfriend she adored, a wonderful job and few worries. Oh, except the fact that she’d just been promoted to work for the worst boss in corporate history. Damian Rush. He was the rich, handsome mogul everyone loved to hate. He was CEO of the finance division of his father’s mega-million company. He was insufferable, a slave driver and unfortunately, one of the sexiest men she’d ever met. Damian was a man who liked control. Hanna knew from the first day that they would never get along. And as for the sparks that flew each time she saw him, she chose to ignore the signs. She had a man in her life and she’d like to keep him. Even the strange thrills her commanding, magnetic and totally hateful boss brought coursing through her body would not overcome her. She was stronger than her deepest, heated desires. Or was she? This ebook contains very hot and explicit descriptions of romantic activity and submissive training. Only mature readers should download this book.

Book Flirting in the Era of MeToo

Download or read book Flirting in the Era of MeToo written by Alison Bartlett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a contemporary review of the social practices and representations of flirting. In the wake of #MeToo, flirting has become entangled with stories of harassment and abuse that have generated both outrage and confusion. Nevertheless, this book argues that negotiating intimacy has always been an ambiguous social practice that can be risky and fraught, and examines how the presiding perception of flirting is constructed in contemporary cultural media. The book interrogates the relation between flirting and scandal, the kinds of scripts available in popular culture, and relations to feminism and other current social theories around gender and sexuality. It asks the questions; how can desire be declared? How can playfulness be understood? And what kind of language is available to speak about these complexities? Drawing from a range of media forms such as public scandal, reality television, and teen film, Flirting in the Era of #MeToo argues that contemporary flirting is both provocative and conservative in its negotiation of an assemblage of shifting values, and considers possibilities for social innovation and change in light of these competing tensions.
