Book excerpt: By exploring the patterns, colours and crests of flags, we can learn all about the histories and aspirations of the countries they represent. Did you know that the flag of Nepal is the only one with more than four sides? Or that the flag of Mozambique features a book, a hoe and an AK47? Find out the difference between the flag of Chad and the flag of Romania (spoiler: there is none), and why the Union Jack is assymetrical. Robert G Fresson’s meticulous, vintage-inflected illustrations provide a refreshingly elegant insight into the fascinating world of vexillology.

Book The Flight from the Flag

Download or read book The Flight from the Flag written by George Walton Dalzell and published by . This book was released on 1940 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dalzell's story, a handful of Confederate cruisers killed the American carrying trade by so harrying Federal merchant shipping that world commerce took flight from ships flying the United States flag. The scene shifts often: from the high seas to high diplomatic intrigue in world capitals, to shipyards of supposedly neutral nations that built ships for the Confederacy while pretending otherwise. Final chapters trace the continuing effects of the Civil War upon the American carrying trade. Originally published in 1940. Download or read book Spectacle of Grief written by Sarah J. Purcell and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illuminating book examines how the public funerals of major figures from the Civil War era shaped public memories of the war and allowed a diverse set of people to contribute to changing American national identities. These funerals featured lengthy processions that sometimes crossed multiple state lines, burial ceremonies open to the public, and other cultural productions of commemoration such as oration and song. As Sarah J. Purcell reveals, Americans' participation in these funeral rites led to contemplation and contestation over the political and social meanings of the war and the roles played by the honored dead. Public mourning for military heroes, reformers, and politicians distilled political and social anxieties as the country coped with the aftermath of mass death and casualties. Purcell shows how large-scale funerals for figures such as Henry Clay and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson set patterns for mourning culture and Civil War commemoration; after 1865, public funerals for figures such as Robert E. Lee, Charles Sumner, Frederick Douglass, and Winnie Davis elaborated on these patterns and fostered public debate about the meanings of the war, Reconstruction, race, and gender.

Book excerpt: Red Flag takes the reader behind the scenes of the biggest, most complex, high-tech military exercise conducted anywhere in the world. The Red Flag exercises, which take place at Nellis Air Force Base just outside of Las Vegas, brings together the U.S. Air Force and aircraft and crews from its allies around the world for two weeks of training that is as intense and demanding as actual combat. Red Flag: Air Combat for the 21st Century offers a complete history and an unprecedented insider’s view of the fully integrated, war-conditions exercise that uses the largest combat range on the planet—the size of Connecticut—and involves every kind of military aircraft and asset, from fighters, tankers, and bombers to helicopters, satellites, and unmanned aircraft.
