Download or read book Proposal for a domestic airline system in Latvia written by Adam Fularz and published by Merkuriusz Polski. Wieczorna.pl sp. z o.o.. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latvia is a relatively small country. It seems that such a relatively small country might not need domestic air services. Nonetheless, there is a chance for some seasonal services that would run in the summer season only. Such a seasonal service could connect seaside resorts with the eastern part of the country. I also see a small chance for some scarce domestic airline connections, like 3 times weekly in the very late evenings to Rezekne, Daugavpils or Ventspils.

Download or read book Flight from Latvia written by Dagnija Neimane and published by Dagnija Neimane. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial chapter of World War II is resurrected in this sometimes tragic tale of one family's flight from their Latvian homeland and subsequent uncertainty as displaced persons. On the day Dagnija Neimane's parents married in 1940, the Soviet Russians killed the Latvian border guards, leading to the first Soviet occupation of their country. The following months culminated in the Year of Horror, with mass arrests, executions, and deportations of fifteen thousand Latvians to Siberia. Though Nazi Germany drove off the invaders and in turn occupied Latvia, in 1944 the Soviets gained the upper hand once more. Some Latvians joined the German forces to fight the Soviets, others who could, formulated plans for escape, wondering if there was hope left for their country. Flight from Latvia is a true narrative of an extended family's exile and journey through refugee camps to find a safe home once more. The narrator, only a youngster at the time, derives details from family stories and periodicals to relay this significant chapter of her family's history. Children, parents, even elderly grandparents flee together as a family-though conditions for food and health are abysmal. Now, having come this far, who would be selected for emigration?

Book excerpt: Of more than 600 Victoria Crosses awarded to British and Empire servicemen during the First World War, nineteen were awarded to airmen of the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Of these, four were posthumous awards and all but one of the total were to officers. Some of these valorous airmen were from humble backgrounds and with limited education, others were collegiate men from wealthy families, but in the words of one senior officer they all had in common ‘the guts of a lion’.
Download or read book The Airline Revolution written by Gordon Mills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When starting new airlines in response to government deregulation, entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Europe reduced some traditional service qualities (to reduce costs), concentrated on non-stop services between city pairs not already so connected, improved on-time performance, and offered low fares to win leisure travelers from the incumbents and to encourage more travel. In recent developments, some of the new airlines have offered optional extras (at higher fares) to attract business travelers and entered major routes alongside the legacy carriers. Within both the U.S. and Europe, deregulation removed most geographical barriers to expansion by short-haul airlines. Later, limited deregulation spread to other world regions, where many short-haul routes connect city pairs in different countries, and where governments have retained traditional two-country mechanisms restricting who may fly. To gain access to domestic routes in other countries, some new airlines are setting up affiliate companies in neighboring countries, with each company legally controlled in the country of domicile. With air travel growing strongly, especially in Asia, a common result is intense, but potentially short-lived, competition on major routes. The recent developments give clear signposts to likely mid-term outcomes, and make this an opportune time to report on the new-airline scene. The Airline Revolution will provide valuable economic analysis of this climate to students, airline professionals advancing to senior positions, public servants and others who provide advice to governments.
