Book Flexibility as a Model Parachute Performance Parameter

Download or read book Flexibility as a Model Parachute Performance Parameter written by Helmut G. Heinrich and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In parachute model experiments, performed for the study of static and dynamic parachute characteristics, one must consider, besides Reynolds and Mach number influences, the effects of canopy porosity, weight, and flexibility. Porosity can be expressed as a function of Reynolds and Mach numbers. For the definition of the structural characteristics, a stiffness-weight index is proposed. Fabrication details for building models with a low stiffness index were developed. Wind-tunnel and catapult tests with models of different stiffness indexes showed significant differences in parachute drag, inflation, and squidding characteristics.

Book Flexibility as Parameter of Model Parachute Performance Characteristics

Download or read book Flexibility as Parameter of Model Parachute Performance Characteristics written by Helmut G. Heinrich and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parachute model tests offer the possibilities of efficiently conducting parametric performance studies. Meaningful model experiments must, however, consider besides the effects of Reynolds and Mach Numbers, those of porosity as well as structural characteristics if non-steady processes shall be investigated. In the following the model stiffness index is defined and its effect upon static and dynamic performance characteristics investigated. Quantitative data and stiffness indexes of cloth samples and parachute models are determined. A new technique of construction is described which provides parachute models with a lower stiffness index than previously available. Results of wind tunnel and catapult experiments with parachute models of different stiffness indexes are shown and, when possible, compared with results of full size tests.

Book The Effects of Flexibility on the Steady State Performance of Small Ribbon Parachutes

Download or read book The Effects of Flexibility on the Steady State Performance of Small Ribbon Parachutes written by Terry Weber and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small textile ribbon parachute models were shown to exhibit steady-state aerodynamic coefficients similar to those of rigid parachute models. Since no detalied study of the effects of model flexibility on the steady-state aerodynamic performance of a parachute model has been reported, several ribbon parachute models of varying flexibility and equal geometric porosity were constructed and tested in the wind tunnel. No correlation was found between model flexibility and measured aerodynamic performance.

Book Recovery System Design Guide

Download or read book Recovery System Design Guide written by E. G. Ewing and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document serves as the third revision of the USAF Parachute Handbook which was first published in 1951. The data and information represent the current state of the art relative to recovery system design and development. The initial chapters describe representative recovery applications, components, subsystems, material, manufacture and testing. The final chapters provide empirical data and analytical methods useful for predicting performance and presenting a definitive design of selected components into a reliable recovery system.

Book Performance of Flexible Parachute Models at Mach Numbers from 1 5 to 4 u

Download or read book Performance of Flexible Parachute Models at Mach Numbers from 1 5 to 4 u written by J. S. DEITERING and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the drag and stability characteristics of 4 fabric parachute models. Two models were tested from Mach 1.5 to 3 at dynamic pressures corresponding to altitudes of approximately 65,000 to 102,000 ft, respectively, to observe their reefed inflation characteristics. A previously untested model was also investigated in this Mach number range but without reefing. The fourth model was investigated without reefing at Mach 3 to 4 where pressures corresponded to altitudes of 102,000 to 124,000 ft, respectively. This model was also tested at Mach 4 with increasing pressures (simulating altitudes from 124,000 down to 77,000 ft) to gain additional information concerning performance under more severe flight conditions. The drag and stability data for each configuration consisted of high-speed schlieren and sideview movies and oscillograph drag traces. (Author).

Book The Effects of Design Parameters and Local Flow Fields on the Performance of Hyperflo Supersonic Parachutes and High Dynamic Pressure Parachute Concepts

Download or read book The Effects of Design Parameters and Local Flow Fields on the Performance of Hyperflo Supersonic Parachutes and High Dynamic Pressure Parachute Concepts written by Leland W. Sims and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wake flow field surveys were conducted in the wind tunnel behind several side strut mounted forebodies in the Mach number range from 2 to 5. Studies of the effects of design parameters on Hyperflo supersonic parachutes, and of high dynamic pressure parachute configurations deployed in such wakes were performed. Wake pressure distributions indicated an asymmetry due to the forebody support structure, and a disturbance to the flow field which emanates from the support structure. The latter was most pronounced at Mach numbers above 3. Modification to the wake caused by an air bleed into the forebody base was also indicated. Normal, but higher than predicted axial wake Mach number distributions were found to exist in the forebody wakes. Hyperflo tests at Mach numbers 5 to 5.5 showed abnormally large parachute oscillations with models located at large downstream positions aft of the forebodies. The effects of Hyperflo design parameters and forebody type on model performance are only qualitatively indicated by the tests conducted. (Author).
