Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in southwestern Virginia, Washington County is a land of fertile grounds and rolling hills along the Holston River. Hardy pioneers settled this land in the mid- to late-1700s and tamed the wilderness to establish communities, churches, and schools. Officially formed in 1776, the county was named after Gen. George Washington for his fame and accomplishments before he became president. From the tribes of its original inhabitants to the introduction of the great railways and commerce, Washington County was a major gateway to the West along the Great Wagon Road and saw thousands of settlers and goods pass through on the way to the uncharted lands of the United States. With over 200 images, Washington County provides an intricate visit to the yesteryear of this rural region with scenes of the Virginia Creeper trains and railroads and the larger communities of Damascus, Meadowview, and Glade Spring, as well as early photographs of the smaller communities such as Benhams, Clinchburg, Mendota, and Hayter's Gap.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book East Nashville written by E. Michael Fleenor and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 19th century, Nashville's families of means built large estates in bucolic East Nashville, away from the noise and pollution of the city. The village of Edgefield became Nashville's most exclusive suburb, with rows of commanding Italianate, Renaissance Revival, and Queen Anne townhomes lining Woodland, Russell, and Fatherland Streets. Streetcar suburbs formed in the Lockeland and East End areas as farmland and country estates were sold off and subdivided. Included in this exquisite collection of images--most of which are from state and local archives and private collections--are rare views of local landmarks that are now only memories. View the magnificent estates, historic churches and schools, and mom-and-pop businesses that once thrived in these communities. Experience the tranquility of Shelby Park--a relaxing boat ride on Lake Sevier or a picnic in the Sycamore Lodge. Also explored in East Nashville are the trials the area has endured over the years, from the Great Fire of 1916 and the Tornado of 1933 to the vast changes brought on by urban renewal. This collection is a tribute to the people who have helped make East Nashville what it is today.

Book Comparing Futures for the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta

Download or read book Comparing Futures for the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta written by Jay Lund and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ecosystem in freefall, a shrinking water supply for cities and agriculture, an antiquated network of failure-prone levees—this is the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the major hub of California's water system. Written by a team of independent water experts, this analysis of the latest data evaluates proposed solutions to the Delta's myriad problems. Through in-depth economic and ecological analysis, the authors find that the current policy of channeling water exports through the Delta is not sustainable for any interest. Employing a peripheral canal-conveying water around the Delta instead of through it—as part of a larger habitat and water management plan appears to be the best strategy to maintain both a high-quality water supply and at the same time improve conditions for native fish and wildlife. This important assessment includes integrated analysis of long term ecosystem and water management options and demonstrates how issues such as climate change and sustainability will shape the future.
