Book To Build Our Lives Together

Download or read book To Build Our Lives Together written by Allison Dorsey and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Reconstruction, against considerable odds, African Americans in Atlanta went about such self-interested pursuits as finding work and housing. They also built community, says Allison Dorsey. To Build Our Lives Together chronicles the emergence of the network of churches, fraternal organizations, and social clubs through which black Atlantans pursued the goals of adequate schooling, more influence in local politics, and greater access to municipal services. Underpinning these efforts were the notions of racial solidarity and uplift. Yet as Atlanta's black population grew--from two thousand in 1860 to forty thousand at the turn of the century--its community had to struggle not only with the dangers and caprices of white laws and customs but also with internal divisions of status and class. Among other topics, Dorsey discusses the boomtown atmosphere of post-Civil War Atlanta that lent itself so well to black community formation; the diversity of black church life in the city; the role of Atlanta's black colleges in facilitating economic prosperity and upward mobility; and the ways that white political retrenchment across Georgia played itself out in Atlanta. Throughout, Dorsey shows how black Atlantans adapted the cultures, traditions, and survival mechanisms of slavery to the new circumstances of freedom. Although white public opinion endorsed racial uplift, whites inevitably resented black Atlantans who achieved some measure of success. The Atlanta race riot of 1906, which marks the end of this study, was no aberration, Dorsey argues, but the inevitable outcome of years of accumulated white apprehensions about black strivings for social equality and economic success. Denied the benefits of full citizenship, the black elite refocused on building an Atlanta of their own within a sphere of racial exclusion that would remain in force for much of the twentieth century.

It left the business of rock stardom to rock stars. But by 1992 alternative rock had spawned a revolution in music and style that transformed youth culture and revived a moribund music industry. Five years later, alternative rock was over, leaving behind a handful of dead heroes, a few dozen masterpieces, and a lot more questions than answers. What, if anything, had the alternative revolution meant? And had it been possible - as so many of its heroes had insisted - for it to be both on MtV and under the radar? Had it used the machinery of corporate rock to destroy corporate rock? In ENtERtAIN US! Craig Schuftan takes you on a journey through the nineties - from Sonic Youth's 'Kool thing' to Radiohead's 'Kid A', NEVERMIND to ODELAY, Madchester to Nu-Metal, Lollapalooza to Woodstock '99 - narrated in the voices of the decade's most important artists. this is the story of alternative rock - the people who made it, the people who loved it, the industry that bought and sold it, and the culture that grew up in its wake - in the last decade of the twentieth century.

Book My Adventures in Broadcasting

Download or read book My Adventures in Broadcasting written by Joe Maltz and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Maltzs career as a broadcast engineer with the American Broadcasting Company spanned thirty-seven years and was followed by five years as a consultant to the television industry. In his memoir, My Adventures in Broadcasting, he takes a look back at his experiences during televisions golden years from the usually invisible point of view of an engineer. Maltz participated in the technical preparation and execution of five Olympic Games, including the 1972 Munich Olympics, during which he covered the tragedy that unfolded there. For his engineering work on Olympic technical design, he won two Emmys. He also covered four political conventions and the first televised coverage of a Russian-American track meet in Moscow, which took place during the Cold War. Over the years memoirs about television broadcasting have been written and published by many notables in the industry. These memoirs recall events from an on-air perspective, ignoring the participation of the technical people that enabled these events to be successfully produced and executed. My Adventures in Broadcasting offers a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective on television coverage of major news and sporting events fills that void.

Jazz clubs and pool halls, ballparks and graveyards, casinos and coffeehouses, back alleys and bus stops are populated by roughed-up boxers, bleary gamblers, rowdy winos, philosophical rail-riders, acrobatic fire-swallowers, and femme fatales - woven together into a uniquely designed collection of images and prose.

Book Cover Up

  • Author : Peter Lance
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2009-03-17
  • ISBN : 0061740934
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Cover Up written by Peter Lance and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since 9/11, investigative reporter Peter Lance has been leading the fight to expose the intelligence gaps that led to 9/11. Now, in the follow-up to his bestselling 1000 Years for Revenge, he returns with devastating new evidence that the government has been covering up its own counterterror failures since the mid-1990s -- and continues today. In Cover Up, Lance shows how the government chose again and again to sacrifice America's national security for personal motives and political convenience. In its first half, he unveils shattering new evidence that terror mastermind Ramzi Yousef ordered the bombing of TWA 800 from his prison cell in order to effect a mistrial in his own terror bombing case. Astonishingly, the FBI was alerted to Yousef's plans in advance by a prison informant who even passed along his detailed sketch of a bomb-trigger device -- a document seen here for the first time. And Lance reveals the shocking reason the Justice Department suddenly ruled the crash anaccident despite overwhelming evidence of the bombing -- throwing away its best chance to penetrate the cell that was already planning 9/11. And the outrage doesn't stop there. In Part II, Lance offers an unofficial "minority report" on the 9/11 Commission, critiquing it as the incomplete, highly politicized "Warren Commission of our time." He explores potential conflicts of interest among its members, from the staff director who wrote a book with Condoleezza Rice, to the former Clinton deputy attorney general who participated in a critical meeting that upended the TWA probe. He exposes the report's false contention that the 9/11 plan was conceived in 1996, when the FBI had knowledge that the plot was in motion as early as 1994. And, in a heart-stopping, minute-by-minute chronicle of the attacks, he asks dozens of unanswered questions about the defense failures of that day -- from why fighter jets weren't scrambled for almost an hour after the hijackings, to why the president and several of his top military advisers remained virtually incommunicado for more than half an hour after it was clear that America was under attack. At a time when America feels no safer than ever, Cover Up will lend new eyes to readers who want the full story behind the 9/11 attacks -- and inspire us all to keep demanding the truth.
