Book Side Lights on American History

Download or read book Side Lights on American History written by Henry W. Elson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Side Lights on American History The cordial reception by the public of the first series of "Side Lights on American History," published a year ago, has been very gratifying to the author, and has far surpassed his expectations. The press notices also have been uniformly commendatory, many making special reference to the literary style. These facts have greatly encouraged the author in preparing the present volume, which, it is hoped, will be received with equal favor. This volume begins where its predecessor left off, and covers the period of the Civil War and that which follows on to the present time. The original plan of choosing out the chief events, without attempting to give a complete history, has been followed, the object being to turn a flash-light here and there on the part that may be taken as a fair sample of the whole. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the immediate aftermath was documented by Japanese photographers. For the most part the images they produced were censored or confiscated, but many were preserved in secret. Some were published widely in Japan during the 1950s, though not in the United States. Later, prints and negatives were gathered by groups such as the Anti-Nuclear Photographers’ Movement of Japan, whose collection is now housed at the Briscoe Center for American History. The center’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Photographs Archive consists of more than eight hundred photographs, over one hundred of which are seen here for the first time in an English-language publication. To mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the bombings, Flash of Light, Wall of Fire features the work of twenty-three Japanese photographers who risked their lives to capture the devastation. Together these images serve as a visual record of nuclear destruction, the horrific effects of radiation exposure, and the mass suffering that ensued. A preface by Briscoe Center Executive Director Don Carleton, an essay by Michael B. Stoff, and an afterword by Japanese journalist Michiko Tanaka explore how the images were collected and preserved as well as how they helped provoke calls for peace and the abolishment of nuclear weapons.

Book Collecting Flashlights

Download or read book Collecting Flashlights written by Stuart Schneider and published by Schiffer Pub Limited. This book was released on 1996 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let There Be Light." Borrowing from the bible, the Eveready Co. used this phrase on the cover of its 1899 catalog, along with a hand from the heavens pointing a flashlight at the earth. Those were the beginning years of the flashlight, originally promoted to help sell batteries and growing to become an essential safety product in every American household and automobile. Never before has there been an extensive treatment of the flashlight from an historical and collectible point of view. In this beautifully illustrated full color volume, Stuart Schneider brings a fascinating world to "light." With flashlights ranging from the purely practical to the elegantly stylish, to the playthings of children, the reader will begin to appreciate the beauty of their design and their inventiveness. 458 color photographs illustrate the book, each accompanied by an informative caption and the value of the model in today's market. Histories of many companies and important information for collectors is also included.
