Book Flame Hardening

Download or read book Flame Hardening written by Hans Wilhelm Grönegress and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intended for shop use tries to familiarize the reader with the peculiari ties of a hardening method which due to its many advantages is now in use, many shops. A general knowledge of the principles of hardening and heat treating is presumed. Introduction 1. The name of the process. Flame hardening is a method derived from the old quench hardening and is used for the surface hardening of heat treatable steels. Flame hardening is so named in analogy to flame cutting as the use of a flame is a distinctive feature of this process as opposed to the use of a furnace. 2. Characteristics of flame hardening. In flame hardening the area to be 6 hardened is heated with a burner of large heat capacity (approx. 0.5 · 10 kcaljhr/ meter of flame lengths or 50,000 BTUfhr/inch of flame length) supplied with a mixture of fuel gas and oxygen. The hardening temperature is thus reached in so short a time at the surface that a heat jam is created, that is, more heat is supplied to the surface than can be dissipated to the interior of the workpiece. As the querr ehing takes place immediately after the heating the penetration of the heat to greater depth is prevented and only the outer layer subject to wear is hardened. The core of the workpiece remains unaffected by this heat treatment in cantrast to the other hardening methods where the entire piece is through heated in a furnace.

Book Investigation of the Hydraulics of Horizontal Drains in Plumbing Systems

Download or read book Investigation of the Hydraulics of Horizontal Drains in Plumbing Systems written by Robert S. Wyly and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported from an investigation of the hydraulics of flow in experimental apparatus simulating nominally horizontal simple and branching drains of plumbing systems. The data are correlated with limited findings in an earlier, unpublished NBS study the results of which have been utilized in current plumbing codes. The need for further research is pointed out, particularly in relation to hydraulic performance of drain systems as affected by steep slopes, drain storage volume, energy losses at stack bases, attenuation of water depths and discharge rates in long drains, and large drain diameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat Treatment Of Steels As An Art To Improve Their Service Performance Has Been Practised Ever Since It Started To Be Used As Tools And Weapons. However, The Scientific Basis Of Heat Treatment Of Steels Became More Apparent Only In The First Half Of This Century And Still Some Gaps Remain In Its Complete Understanding.Earlier Books On Heat Treatment Of Steels Mainly Emphasised The Art And The Empirically Arrived Principles Of Heat Treatment. In The Last Few Decades, Our Understanding Of Phase Transformations And Mechanical Behaviour Of Steels, And Consequently Of Heat Treatment Of Steels, Has Considerably Increased. In This Book On Principles Of Heat Treatment Of Steels The Emphasis Is On The Scientific Principles Behind The Various Heat Treatment Processes Of Steels. Though It Is Expected That The Reader Has Sufficient Background In Phase Transformations And Mechanical Behaviour Of Materials, First Few Chapters Review These Topics With Specific Reference To Steels. Basic Principles Of Various Heat Treatment Processes Of Steels Including Surface Hardening Processes, Are Then Covered In Sufficient Detail To Give A Good Overall Understanding Of These Processes. The Detail Engineering Aspects Are, However, Omitted. These Are Easily Available In Various Handbooks On Heat Treatment. The Book Also Covers Heat Treatment Of Tool Steels And Cast Irons. The Book Has Been Well Written And Can Be Used A Textbook On Heat Treatment For Undergraduate Students.
