Book Flame Characteristics for Fires in Southern Fuels

Download or read book Flame Characteristics for Fires in Southern Fuels written by Ralph Melvin Nelson (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Equations describing flow in bouyant turbulent jets have been applied to the derivation of characteristics for forest fire flames. Approximate solutions are used to develop relationships for flame lengths, angles, heights, and tip velocities for fires heading with the wind and burning in calm air as functions of Byram's fire intensity. I. (Btu/ft-sec). Flame length and velocity relationships are tested with data taken during controlled burns in southern fuels and with data from the literature. Backfire data are described by the equations for calm-air conditions. Both theoretical and experimental results show that flame lengths for backfires and headfires vary as I-2/3 and I-1/2, respectively; flame tip velocities vary as I-1/3 and I-1/2.

Book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems

Download or read book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems written by Thomas A. Waldrop and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. A new appreciation and interest has developed in recent years for using prescribed fire in grasslands, especially hardwood forests, and on steep mountain slopes. Proper planning and execution of prescribed fires are necessary to reduce detrimental effects, such as the impacts on air and downstream water quality. Book Ecological Restoration and Management of Longleaf Pine Forests

Download or read book Ecological Restoration and Management of Longleaf Pine Forests written by L. Katherine Kirkman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Restoration and Management of Longleaf Pine Forests is a timely synthesis of the current understanding of the natural dynamics and processes in longleaf pine ecosystems. This book beautifully illustrates how incorporation of basic ecosystem knowledge and an understanding of socioeconomic realities shed new light on established paradigms and their application for restoration and management. Unique for its holistic ecological focus, rather than a more traditional silvicultural approach, the book highlights the importance of multi-faceted actions that robustly integrate forest and wildlife conservation at landscape scales, and merge ecological with socioeconomic objectives for effective conservation of the longleaf pine ecosystem.

Book Grassfires

    Book Details:
  • Author : Phil Cheney
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 0643093834
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book Grassfires written by Phil Cheney and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2008 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassfirespresents the latest information from CSIRO on the behavior and spread of fires in grasslands. This second edition follows ten years of research aimed at improving the understanding of fundamental processes involved in the behavior of bushfires and grassfires. The book has been extensively revised and new case studies have been added to reflect the latest findings in research and investigations. The book covers all aspects of fire behavior and spread in the major types of grasses in Australia. It examines the factors that affect fire behavior in continuous grassy fuels; fire in spinifex fuels; the effect of weather and topography on fire spread; wildfire suppression strategies; and how to reconstruct grassfire spread after the fact. The three fire-spread meters designed by CSIRO and used for the prediction of fire danger and rate of spread of grassfires are explained and their use and limitations discussed. This new edition expands on the historical view of grassfires with respect to extensive Aboriginal burning, combustion chemistry, flame structure and temperature, spotting and spread in discontinuous/eaten out fuels, and the effect of wind in complex terrain. The case studies in the chapter "Wildfires and Their Suppression" have been updated and include the major wild grassfire events of recent years, the January 2003 ACT fires and the 2005 Wangary, SA fire. The "Myths, Facts and Fallacies" chapter includes new myths and a new section on personal safety during a wild grass fire. Of interest to all rural fire fighters and rural landholders, students and teachers of courses on landscape and ecological processes, rural and peri-urban dwellers, fire authorities and researchers.

Book Stand fuel and potential fire behavior characteristics in an irregular south eastern Arizona ponderosa pine stand

Download or read book Stand fuel and potential fire behavior characteristics in an irregular south eastern Arizona ponderosa pine stand written by Michael G. Harrington and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arizona's natural ponderosa pine stands are characterized by open, mature groups and adjacent closed, dense thickets. The open structure of the mature groups permits a warm, dry environment, resulting in very low fuel moisture during much of the fire season and creating high ignition and fire spread potentials in the abundant fuels. The large woody fuel component of the adjacent closed groups contributes to a high crown fire potential in the low, dense sapling crowns. These findings suggest a need for fuel management activities where values-at-risk are high.

Book A Gallery of Combustion and Fire

Download or read book A Gallery of Combustion and Fire written by Charles E. Baukal, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gallery of Combustion and Fire is the first book to provide a graphical perspective of the extremely visual phenomenon of combustion in full color. It is designed primarily to be used in parallel with, and supplement existing combustion textbooks that are usually in black and white, making it a challenge to visualize such a graphic phenomenon. Each image includes a description of how it was generated, which is detailed enough for the expert but simple enough for the novice. Processes range from small scale academic flames up to full scale industrial flames under a wide range of conditions such as low and normal gravity, atmospheric to high pressures, actual and simulated flames, and controlled and uncontrolled flames. Containing over 500 color images, with over 230 contributors from over 75 organizations, this volume is a valuable asset for experts and novices alike.
