Book Fixed base and In flight Simulations of Longitudinal and Lateral directional Handling Qualities for Piloted Re entry Vehicles

Download or read book Fixed base and In flight Simulations of Longitudinal and Lateral directional Handling Qualities for Piloted Re entry Vehicles written by Edwin A. Kidd and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal and lateral directional flying qualities for the re-entry mission are reported. The program utilized primarily a high-fidelity fixed-base ground simulator with evaluations made by three pilots. One of the three pilots also made in-flight evaluations of longitudinal flying qualities in the same vehicle, a threeaxis variable stability airplane flown with a two-axis side controller and conventional rubber pedals. Control sensitivity evaluations were compared to center stick results of earlier work. The longitudinal flying qualities as evaluated both on the ground simulator and in flight are compared and related to earlier investigations. Pilot rating variability, both interpilot and intrapilot, are quantized and discussed for the ground and flight experiments. Performance measures are reported.

Book Evaluation of Lateral directional Handling Qualities of Piloted Re entry Vehicles Utilizing Fixed base and In flight Evaluations

Download or read book Evaluation of Lateral directional Handling Qualities of Piloted Re entry Vehicles Utilizing Fixed base and In flight Evaluations written by J. I. Meeker and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three different groups of lateral-directional flight characteristics were investigated and the results are presented in three parts. Part I evaluation configurations were selected from a previous re-entry vehicle evaluation program; Part II configurations were based on a general lateral-directional handling qualities investigation; and Part III configurations were directly applicable to lifting body investigations. All of the configurations were evaluated for their suitability to the re-entry mission. The vehicle used for both the fixed-base and in-flight simulations was a three-axis variable stability T-33 airplane. (Author).

Book Fixed base Simulator Investigation of the Effects of L alpha and True Speed on Pilot Opinion of Longitudinal Flying Qualities

Download or read book Fixed base Simulator Investigation of the Effects of L alpha and True Speed on Pilot Opinion of Longitudinal Flying Qualities written by Charles R. Chalk and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is directed toward investigating the effects on pilots rating of large variations (L alpha) in the relative amplitude and phase of the basic airplane responses to elevator control. The effects of L alpha and true speed on longitudinal flying qualities, optimum control gain, and normal acceleration response to turbulence were investigated in a ground simulator. The steady state ratio of normal acceleration to angle of attack was found to be of significance both to the flying qualities of an airplane and to the optimum longitudinal control gain. Normal acceleration response to rough air was demonstrated to be primarily a function of L alpha and the short period frequency and damping ratio.

Book In flight Simulation of the Lateral directional Handling Qualities of Entry Vehicles

Download or read book In flight Simulation of the Lateral directional Handling Qualities of Entry Vehicles written by Robert P. Harper and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial results of a flight research program to simulate the handling qualities of winged vehicles during atmospheric entry are discussed. The purpose is to evaluate in flight the effects on pilot-vehicle performance of the dynamic flight characteristics of atmospheric entry vehicles, and to determine their suitability for the entry mission. The evaluations were conducted in a three-axis variable stability T-33 airplane. Different sets of handling characteristics were evaluated in maneuvering flight and rated as to their suitability for the entry mission. Emphasis was placed upon the lateral handling characteristics, and 129 configurations were examined by one pilot. An effort is made to relate pilot objections and the attendant poor ratings to their causative vehicle characteristics. The piloting difficulties involved in the control of vehicles with either static or dynamic directional instabilities are discussed. (Author).
