Book excerpt: The Uprisings exhibition at La Maison Rouge presents all facets of the work of Jean-Jacques Lebel the artist but also that of Jean-Jacques Lebel the exhibition curator, writer, performer, festival organizer, discoverer, and active smuggler who has been an agitator within French artist circles over the past forty years. More than an exhibition, what we have here is a montrage (a Show/editing), to employ the term invented by the artist himself. Lebel offers us a whole "arranged in terms of the connections or caroms among the works-among their contents, not among their commercial values-and this is done in such a way as to encourage movements of thought in all senses of the term". In other words, this montrage is a unique way of presenting objects that, a priori, have nothing to do with each other, but which "share some common issues and modes of operation that serve to intensify one another". Entitled Uprisings, the exhibition pertains to "a process that is at once artistic, historical, mental, personal, and social-which implies a long process of maturation and multiple encounters, influences, exchanges, and permutations" (JJL). The exhibition is divided into themes. Each corresponds to Jean-Jacques Lebel's obsession with the enigma which a work and the wider context of its emergence raise. Happenings, Insubordination, Poetry, Hallucination, Eros, Dada, War and Rhizome are some examples. Through these interconnecting ensembles, visitors can engage with some of Jean-Jacques Lebel's major installations, works of primitive art, works by anonymous artists and others by such important allies as Johann Heinrich Füssli, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Louise Michel, Fourier, Ravachol, Guillaume Apollinaire, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Otto Dix, George Grosz, André Breton, Francis Picabia, Antonin Artaud, Victor Brauner, Bernard Heidsieck, Erró, Antonio Saura, Peter Saul, Camilla Adami and Orlan: some three hundred works in all which continue to engross the artist in an earnest and endless dialogue. Book The Acad mie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture

Download or read book The Acad mie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture written by Christian Michel and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture (French Academy of Painting and Sculpture)—perhaps the single most influential art institution in history—governed the arts in France for more than 150 years, from its founding in 1648 until its abolition in 1793. Christian Michel's sweeping study presents an authoritative, in-depth analysis of the Académie’s history and legacy. The Académie Royale assembled nearly all of the important French artists working at the time, maintained a virtual monopoly on teaching and exhibitions, enjoyed a priority in obtaining royal commissions, and deeply influenced the artistic landscape in France. Yet the institution remains little understood today: all commentary on it, during its existence and since its abolition, is based on prejudices, both favorable and critical, that have shaped the way the institution has been appraised. This book takes a different approach. Rather than judging the Académie Royale, Michel unravels existing critical discourse to consider the nuances and complexities of the academy’s history, reexamining its goals, the shifting power dynamics both within the institution and in the larger political landscape, and its relationship with other French academies and guilds.

Fearful they will return and spread the “Human Violence Virus,” their rulers have resorted to unacceptable levels of violence to prevent the Twins’ friends from rescuing them. In Betrayed, readers join Qwelby as he slips into the fifth dimension to free Tullia from prison. Whilst Qwelby finds love in his second Awakening, the horror Tullia fears of hers is marked by bloody knife fights. Shooting his way out of danger, the Twins mentally reconnect, but before he can act Qwelby is kidnapped by the Professor. On Vertazia the two key rulers plot against each other, both using sixteen-year-old Xaala who dangerously twists their plans to her own ends – to destroy one Twin and win the hearts of the other. But which one for what end? A fraught journey aboard a flying Pirate Ship crewed by two of the Twins’ Best Friends sees Tullia join Qwelby on the Professor’s island. All should be well but Qwelby has fallen deeply in love with a human girl. Feeling bitterly betrayed, Tullia flees. As Qwelby launches himself through dimensions in pursuit, Xaala attacks him with a flaming sword, only to be hurled back by the strength of the human girl’s love for him. To return home with the truths they have learnt on Earth and save their world, the Twins must be together. Will Tullia forgive her Twin or return to love amongst her adoptive tribe of Bushmen, leaving Qwelby with his human lover, and the Twins on Earth – forever?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many men dream of living out their James Bond fantasy, the screen version: exotic travel, adventure, hot women, and icy martinis shaken not stirred. Reality proves different when an innocent quest for a simpler, more spiritual life turns into a nightmare as two seekers, ordinary Americans, stumble across the path of the covert operations of two world powers and become unwilling spies. This book takes the reader from where the author’s previous book Smarter than Snakes left off. Accused by the woman he loves of using and betraying her and haunted by secret agents of the shadow government, the damned hero of the story seeks sanctuary off the gringo trail in Saudi Arabia. There, under the guidance of a top American lobbyist working for a Saudi billionaire, he assesses his options and opts to move to Greece under an assumed name. Thinking he is safe from the murderous secret agents of the shadow government that operates under the façade of democracy, equality, human rights and other myths, he resumes his quest for a more spiritual life that leads only to wild goose chases. He finds comfort in the arms of a woman whom he considers the true love of his life, but his world comes crashing down when secret agents of this shadow government mistakenly assassinate her instead of him. Crushed and guilt-ridden, he seeks the help of the powerful American lobbyist who helped him in Saudi Arabia. Thanks to his extensive list of contacts, the lobbyist facilitates the protagonist’s escape to a remote island, an Eden-like setting but without fickle Eves and venomous Serpents. The cold, hard facts to back up the truths that hold this work together and the lavish descriptions of the hero’s experience of such spectacular events as hitching a ride on a billionaire’s floating palace, staying at the first seven-star all-suite hotel, flying on the Concorde, touring Greek locations and attending unusual ceremonies and rites in Scotland, Spanish Africa and Papua New Guinea, make for a rich, riveting story that holds one's interest through to the very end. NOTE: This book contains strong intellectual material that may be disturbing to some religious believers. Reader discretion is advised.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Quintilian

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Quintilian written by Marc van der Poel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-03 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. Fabius Quintilianus was a prominent orator, declaimer, and teacher of eloquence in the first century CE. After his retirement, he wrote the Institutio oratoria, a unique treatise in antiquity because it is both a handbook of rhetoric and an educational treatise. Quintilian's fame and influence are not only based on the Institutio, but also on the two collections of Declamations which were later attributed to him. The Oxford Handbook of Quintilian aims to present Quintilian's Institutio as a key treatise in the history of Greco-Roman rhetoric and to trace its influence on the theory and practice of rhetoric and education up to the present day. Topics include Quintilian's educational programme, his concepts and classifications of rhetoric, his discussion of the five canons of rhetoric, his style, his views on literary criticism, declamation, and the relationship between rhetoric and law, and the importance of the visual and performing arts in his work. His legacy is presented in successive chapters devoted to Quintilian in late antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Italian Renaissance, Northern Europe during the Renaissance, Europe from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, and the United States of America. Other chapters examine the biographical tradition, the history of printed editions, and modern assessments of Quintilian. The contributors represent a wide range of expertise and scholarly traditions, offering a unique, multidisciplinary perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainframe Experimentalism challenges the conventional wisdom that the digital arts arose out of Silicon Valley’s technological revolutions in the 1970s. In fact, in the 1960s, a diverse array of artists, musicians, poets, writers, and filmmakers around the world were engaging with mainframe and mini-computers to create innovative new artworks that contradict the stereotypes of "computer art." Juxtaposing the original works alongside scholarly contributions by well-established and emerging scholars from several disciplines, Mainframe Experimentalism demonstrates that the radical and experimental aesthetics and political and cultural engagements of early digital art stand as precursors for the mobility among technological platforms, artistic forms, and social sites that has become commonplace today.
